Hindustan Zinc is the cleaner choice for concentrated zinc, lead and silver exposure, while Vedanta is the broader but more leveraged metals-and-resources holding. Hindustan Zinc (HZL) finished FY2025-26 with ₹5,594 crore of net cash, whereas Vedanta Limited reported ₹53,254 crore of net debt and 0.95× net debt/EBITDA. The trade-off is straightforward: HZL offers exposure purity and a stronger balance sheet; Vedanta offers diversification across commodities and greater group-level operating leverage.

Hindustan Zinc and Vedanta at a glance
These are not two interchangeable ways to buy the same metals business. HZL is primarily a zinc, lead and silver producer. Vedanta Limited contains Zinc India but also owns or operates aluminium, oil and gas, power, iron ore, steel, copper and other natural-resources businesses. That difference determines how each share responds to commodity prices, capital needs and balance-sheet stress.

What exposure do you actually get?
Hindustan Zinc: a concentrated zinc, lead and silver vehicle
HZL is designed around a relatively narrow metals thesis. Zinc and lead drive the operating business, while silver is an important by-product. This concentration can make the share easier to analyse: an investor can focus on zinc and lead treatment economics, mined and refined volumes, silver output, operating costs, capital allocation and the balance sheet.
Concentration is useful when your investment view is specific. If you expect supportive zinc demand, constrained mine supply or strong silver prices, HZL gives that view a direct route. The same concentration becomes a risk when zinc or lead prices weaken, smelter economics deteriorate or silver output falls. A weaker commodity cycle is less likely to be offset by an unrelated business inside the same company.
Vedanta: a multi-commodity natural-resources holding
Vedanta combines Zinc India with aluminium, oil and gas, power, iron ore, steel, copper and other operations. Zinc therefore matters greatly, but it is not the entire investment case. The group can benefit when several commodities or businesses perform well at the same time, and one weak commodity may be partly offset by strength elsewhere.
Diversification does not remove risk. It adds more operating variables: different commodity cycles, project requirements, regulatory regimes, subsidiaries, capital-allocation decisions and debt obligations. The share can respond to the performance of the consolidated group rather than to zinc prices alone. Investors must therefore evaluate both the businesses and the way cash moves through the group.
Production scale and operating evidence
Zinc India volumes
Vedanta’s Zinc India disclosure reported 1,114 kt of mined metal, 1,048 kt of refined metal and 627 tonnes of saleable silver in FY2025-26. In FY2024-25, the corresponding figures were 1,095 kt mined, 1,052 kt refined and 687 tonnes of saleable silver.

| Refined metal | 1,052 kt | 1,048 kt | Lower by 4 kt |
| Saleable silver | 687 tonnes | 627 tonnes | Lower by 60 tonnes |
The data show a large, integrated operation, but they do not establish future returns by themselves. Mined and refined volumes can move differently, and silver output can vary even when zinc production rises. Prices, costs, grades, treatment charges, energy expenses, sustaining capital and working capital also affect profit and cash generation.
How much does zinc contribute inside Vedanta?
Vedanta’s FY2025-26 finance review reported Zinc India EBITDA of ₹22,056 crore and total Zinc EBITDA of ₹23,377 crore. Consolidated Vedanta EBITDA was ₹55,976 crore. Zinc was therefore a major contributor, but it represented only part of the consolidated earnings base.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThis distinction matters when modelling the shares. A zinc-price forecast may be highly relevant to HZL, but it cannot explain all of Vedanta’s EBITDA. For Vedanta, an investor should build separate assumptions for aluminium, oil and gas, power, iron ore, steel, copper and zinc, then consider how those businesses interact with group debt and capital allocation.
Balance-sheet strength is the clearest dividing line
Hindustan Zinc’s net-cash position
HZL’s CFO statement says: “We closed the year with a net cash position of ₹5,594 crore (as compared to a net debt position of ₹1,169 crore in the previous year).” The change from net debt to net cash gives HZL a financial cushion if zinc prices weaken or if the company needs to fund maintenance and growth investment.
HZL also reported ₹13,337 crore of free cash flow before growth capex and renewable investment in FY2025-26. That qualification is important: the figure is before those categories of spending, so it should not be treated as cash available for every possible distribution after all investment commitments. The company reported a dividend of ₹10 per share and approximately 67% ROCE for the year.
Vedanta’s consolidated debt and cash
At 31 March 2026, Vedanta reported ₹53,254 crore of net debt, ₹81,740 crore of gross debt and ₹28,485 crore of cash. Its reported net debt/EBITDA was 0.95×. The ratio indicates leverage relative to EBITDA, but the absolute debt figures still matter because interest, maturities, refinancing conditions and capital spending must be managed across a diversified group.
Vedanta’s chairman reported FY2025-26 revenue of ₹1,74,075 crore and EBITDA of ₹55,976 crore, with EBITDA margins expanding to 39%, a 467-basis-point improvement. Stronger EBITDA can support debt service, but commodity earnings are cyclical. A year with high prices or better margins should not be assumed to persist throughout a down cycle.
| Balance-sheet question | HZL | Vedanta |
|---|---|---|
| Does the reported position show net cash or net debt? | ₹5,594 crore net cash | ₹53,254 crore net debt |
| Gross debt disclosed? | Not stated in the cited figures | ₹81,740 crore |
| Cash disclosed? | Not stated separately in the cited figures | ₹28,485 crore |
| Leverage ratio disclosed? | Not stated in the cited figures | 0.95× net debt/EBITDA |
The practical implication is that HZL gives a metals investor more balance-sheet optionality. Vedanta’s debt does not automatically make the stock unsuitable, but it raises the importance of refinancing, subsidiary cash flows, interest costs, dividend decisions and the timing of large projects.
Dividends: compare yield, not just rupees per share
HZL reported a FY2025-26 dividend of ₹10 per share. Vedanta reported ₹34 per share. The larger rupee amount does not prove that Vedanta paid the higher yield: yield is the dividend divided by the share price, and the two shares trade at different prices.
To compare income properly, use synchronized market data and calculate:
Rank #4
dividend yield = trailing or declared dividend per share ÷ share price on the same date × 100
Then examine whether the payment is supported by recurring free cash flow after maintenance capital expenditure, debt service and required investment. HZL’s reported net cash and high ROCE may provide more room for distributions, but its concentrated commodity exposure can still affect future cash generation. Vedanta’s ₹34 dividend must be assessed alongside its consolidated debt, cash requirements and the needs of its operating businesses.
Commodity sensitivity: which risk are you choosing?
HZL’s primary sensitivities
- Zinc and lead prices: These are the main revenue drivers, so a sustained decline can pressure margins and cash flow.
- Silver prices and recovery: Silver is a valuable by-product, but annual saleable output fell from 687 tonnes to 627 tonnes in the reported comparison.
- Mine grades and production: Mined volume does not automatically translate into the same refined or saleable output.
- Smelting and energy economics: Refining margins, treatment charges and power costs influence the value captured from each tonne.
- Concentration: There are fewer unrelated businesses to offset a weak zinc-and-lead cycle.
Vedanta’s primary sensitivities
- Several commodity prices: Aluminium, zinc, oil, gas, iron ore, steel and copper can move in different directions.
- Operating execution: A problem in one segment may be offset by another, but a broad commodity downturn can affect many divisions simultaneously.
- Power and project requirements: The group has more capital-intensive businesses and a wider set of investment decisions.
- Leverage: Fixed debt obligations can make equity outcomes more sensitive to EBITDA changes.
- Group complexity: Investors must follow consolidated results as well as the performance and cash flows of important subsidiaries and segments.
Which stock fits which investor objective?
| If your priority is… | The more natural fit is… | Why | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct zinc, lead and silver exposure | Hindustan Zinc | The business is concentrated in those metals | Less diversification if zinc and lead weaken |
| A stronger reported balance sheet | Hindustan Zinc | ₹5,594 crore net cash at 31 March 2026 | Commodity concentration remains high |
| Exposure to several resource sectors | Vedanta | Includes zinc, aluminium, oil and gas, power, iron ore, steel and copper | More operating and group-level complexity |
| Potentially greater consolidated operating leverage | Vedanta | Large EBITDA base across multiple businesses | ₹53,254 crore net debt and ₹81,740 crore gross debt |
| Dividend comparison | Neither can be selected from per-share figures alone | ₹10 versus ₹34 must be converted to yield using current, synchronized prices | Payout sustainability also depends on cash needs and leverage |
A practical due-diligence process before choosing
- Define the metal thesis. Decide whether you want a zinc-and-silver view or a broader basket covering aluminium, oil and gas, power, iron ore, steel and copper.
- Separate business exposure from share exposure. For HZL, begin with zinc, lead and silver assumptions. For Vedanta, model each significant segment instead of treating consolidated EBITDA as a zinc proxy.
- Check the latest production trend. Compare mined metal, refined metal and saleable silver over several reporting periods. Do not infer future earnings from one year’s volume change.
- Reconcile cash and debt. Review gross debt, cash, net debt, maturities, interest expense and capital expenditure. HZL’s net-cash figure and Vedanta’s net-debt figure are starting points, not complete liquidity analyses.
- Test a down-cycle case. Reduce metal prices and EBITDA, then consider whether dividends, maintenance investment and debt service remain comfortable.
- Calculate valuation on one date. Use synchronized market prices for P/E, EV/EBITDA, price-to-book and free-cash-flow yield. A company cannot be called “cheaper” or “better value” without those comparable inputs.
- Check dividend quality. Convert the declared per-share amount into yield, then compare it with post-capex free cash flow and balance-sheet needs.
- Review concentration limits. Even if HZL is the better metals instrument, decide how much of a portfolio should depend on zinc, lead and silver.
Common mistakes in this comparison
Treating Vedanta as a pure zinc stock
Zinc India is a major contributor, with ₹22,056 crore of EBITDA reported for FY2025-26, but total Zinc EBITDA was ₹23,377 crore against consolidated Vedanta EBITDA of ₹55,976 crore. The rest of the group changes the risk and return profile.
Calling the higher dividend the better income stock
₹34 per share is not automatically a higher yield than ₹10 per share. Prices, share counts, declaration dates and payout context must be aligned before making that comparison.

Vedanta’s revenue grew to ₹1,74,075 crore and EBITDA to ₹55,976 crore, but the company still reported ₹53,254 crore net debt. Improved earnings help, yet debt obligations remain relevant when commodity prices or margins reverse.
Best Value
Assuming net cash eliminates all risk
HZL’s ₹5,594 crore net cash is a strength, not a guarantee of rising returns. Zinc, lead and silver prices, production, operating costs, capital allocation and future investment can still change the outcome.
Using one-year production changes as a forecast
Mined metal increased from 1,095 kt to 1,114 kt, while refined metal declined from 1,052 kt to 1,048 kt and saleable silver declined from 687 tonnes to 627 tonnes. Those movements illustrate why a single metric is insufficient for a forward estimate.
Bottom line for a metals-exposure decision
Choose Hindustan Zinc when your central objective is concentrated zinc, lead and silver exposure backed by the reported ₹5,594 crore net-cash position. Choose Vedanta when you deliberately want a diversified natural-resources group and accept the additional leverage, segment complexity and parent-level financial risk that come with it.
Neither choice is universally superior. HZL is the more direct instrument for a zinc-and-silver thesis; Vedanta is the broader, more leveraged bet on a portfolio of commodities and operating businesses. Make the final comparison only after updating share prices, valuation multiples, debt maturities, cash-flow requirements and dividend yields on the same date.
