Hindustan Power is applying AI and software to a physical coal-supply workflow, while its director argues that a grid with more rooftop solar, batteries and electric vehicles will also need better digital coordination. Those are connected ideas, but they are not the same project: the reported coal system is in use, while the grid vision is a broader argument about what future electricity networks may require.
What Hindustan Power is changing with software
Hindustan Power is an Indian independent power producer with renewable energy, transitional power generation and mining businesses. The company identifies Ratul Puri as its chairman. Its software story is not that the company has become a software firm; it is that digital tools are being applied to operational problems within its energy and mining activities.

The most detailed account comes from a 2026 ETCIO interview with Hindustan Power Director Arman Puri. The interview describes AI models and document automation for a coal-trucking route between a mine in Chhattisgarh and a thermal power plant in Madhya Pradesh. The reported implementation details and performance figures are interview claims, not independently audited results.

The route described in the interview is roughly 200 kilometres and takes seven to eight hours. The system combines checks at the truck, cargo and paperwork stages rather than relying on a single AI model.

Three in-house AI models
- Cargo seals: A smartphone-based check verifies tamper-proof seals on the coal cargo.
- Truck monitoring: An onboard camera and edge device look for intrusions or unauthorized vehicles. The interview says this can operate during periods without network connectivity.
- Coal quality: Automated robotic analysis tests a random 70-kilogram coal sample from each truck to determine its gross calorific value, a measure related to the energy content of the coal.
These are described as three in-house models developed for this particular operating process. The account does not identify an external software vendor or establish that the system is a product offered to other companies.
From truck documents to SAP
A separate custom optical character recognition (OCR) system reads about 30 documents per truck, validates the information and posts a goods receipt note to SAP. In the interview, Puri said the workflow eliminated more than 1,000 hours of manual data entry each month and roughly 50,000 pages of paperwork. Those are reported outcomes, not independently verified measurements.

Why the implementation depends on operations teams
Puri describes Hindustan Power’s approach as putting engineers alongside operational teams so they can learn the actual workflow and build or integrate tools around it. That matters because a model has to fit the conditions of a mine-to-plant route: inspections, connectivity gaps, sample handling and records all have to work together.

Why a renewable-heavy grid may need software coordination
The second part of the argument is about the power system beyond coal logistics. Rooftop solar can make households and businesses electricity producers as well as consumers. Batteries can shift when energy is stored or used, and electric vehicles add flexible demand and, in some arrangements, potential storage. If many such assets connect to the grid, coordinating their flows, prices and dispatch becomes more complex than managing electricity as a one-way delivery from large plants to customers.
Puri’s view, as reported by ETCIO, is that software and data systems will be important to coordinating this more distributed, two-way network. This is a forward-looking thesis, not evidence that Hindustan Power has already deployed a grid-wide coordination platform.

How the India Energy Stack fits—and does not fit
The India Energy Stack is a separate government initiative, not a Hindustan Power product. In a June 28, 2025 Ministry of Power announcement, the ministry outlined unique IDs for consumers, assets and transactions, consent-based data sharing, and open APIs. It also described a planned 12-month proof of concept that included a Utility Intelligence Platform pilot with selected utilities. The release announced planned work; it does not establish that the pilot or broader rollout is now complete.
The policy goal is consistent with the general need for interoperable data and analytics in a more complex electricity system, but the sources do not show a direct connection between the government initiative and Hindustan Power’s coal-logistics tools. The ministry release quoted Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar: “There is an urgent need for developing robust Digital Public Infrastructure in the power sector to manage the country’s rising demand, ensure grid stability, and empower consumers.”

Infrastructure context: solar and storage awards
Hindustan Power’s software story sits alongside a growing renewables and storage portfolio. In a December 30, 2025 company release, it said it had secured nearly 1 GW of solar capacity and more than 0.75 GWh of storage projects during 2025. These are company-reported awards, not a measure of capacity already operating.
| Project described by Hindustan Power | Reported scale | What the figure measures |
|---|---|---|
| Uttar Pradesh solar project | 435 MWp | Solar peak capacity; the company described it as being under a 25-year power purchase agreement. |
| Solar project with battery storage | 200 MWp solar; more than 250 MWh storage | Solar peak capacity and storage energy quantity, respectively. |
| Standalone storage project | 120 MWh | Storage energy quantity, not generation capacity. |
The company’s renewable energy page says it commissioned a utility-scale solar plant in 2010, developed a 30 MW solar PV project in 2011, and focuses on integrated solar and battery storage solutions. These are company-presented historical claims. Solar capacity expressed in MWp and storage expressed in MWh describe different things: peak generation capability versus the amount of energy storage can hold.
Quick Recap
What the story establishes—and what it does not
- Established in the interview: Hindustan Power says it developed in-house AI models and custom OCR for a specific coal route and connected the paperwork workflow to SAP.
- Reported, not independently validated: The monthly time and paperwork reductions attributed to the system.
- A strategic argument: Distributed energy resources are likely to make software-based coordination more important.
- A separate government initiative: India Energy Stack’s announced design and planned pilot.
- Not established: That Hindustan Power’s coal tools are a commercial software product, that it has launched a grid coordination platform, or that the government pilot has completed.
