The Hilton Honors American Express Card has no annual fee and automatically provides complimentary Hilton Honors Silver status while you remain eligible under the card terms. It does not grant Gold automatically: you must make $20,000 in eligible calendar-year purchases to qualify for an upgrade to Gold. The card is most relevant if you stay at Hilton properties and can use Hilton points; it does not include a Free Night Reward.
What the card earns
The U.S. card earns Hilton Honors points at different rates depending on where you spend. American Express lists these rates on its product page:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Eligible spending | Points earned |
|---|---|
| Direct purchases at Hilton hotels and resorts | 7X Hilton Honors points |
| U.S. restaurants, supermarkets, and gas stations | 5X Hilton Honors points |
| Other eligible purchases | 3X Hilton Honors points |
These are points, not a fixed cash-back percentage. Their practical value depends on whether you can redeem them for Hilton stays you want, at available properties and dates. Do not treat a points multiplier as a guaranteed dollar return.

Cardholders receive complimentary Hilton Honors Silver status. American Express describes a 20% bonus on base points and a fifth night free on eligible standard-room reward stays booked entirely with points. The fifth-night benefit depends on finding an eligible reward stay and having enough points for the booking; see the issuer’s Hilton card benefits for the program terms.
#1 Best Overall
Silver is the automatic tier—not Gold. The card’s product page lists the status benefit and its conditions at American Express.
How to earn Gold with this card
Gold is available after $20,000 in eligible purchases on the card during a calendar year. Under the cardmember agreement, purchases by additional cardmembers can count toward the threshold, but the upgrade is for the basic cardmember. Allow approximately 10 to 12 weeks after reaching the threshold for the status change to take effect. The earned status lasts through the following calendar year. These conditions are in the December 31, 2025 cardmember agreement.
That spending target is a qualification threshold, not a reason to put purchases on the card if another payment method is better for your needs. If reaching Gold would require spending beyond your ordinary budget, the status should not be treated as free.

American Express states that this card does not currently have a Free Night Reward benefit. That distinction matters if a free night is the benefit you want from a Hilton card; the issuer’s card FAQ confirms the omission. The card’s value instead rests on its earning rates, complimentary Silver status, and your ability to redeem Hilton points.
Travel fees and protections
The card has no foreign transaction fee, according to the agreement dated December 31, 2025. Its protections have specific conditions and exclusions rather than covering every travel or purchase problem.
- Rental-car loss or damage: The issuer says you must pay for the entire rental with the eligible card and decline the rental company’s collision damage waiver. Coverage is secondary, does not include liability, and is unavailable for rentals in Australia, Italy, and New Zealand.
- Purchase protection: Applies to covered purchases for up to 90 days and is subject to limits and exclusions.
Check the current benefits terms before relying on either protection.

Rates, fees, and carrying a balance

These rates are variable and may change with the Prime Rate; consult the agreement and live terms for the applicable rate.

The agreement says purchase interest is not charged when you pay the full balance, adjusted for any outstanding plans, by the due date. The due date is at least 25 days after each billing period closes. Cash advances accrue interest from the transaction date. Other listed charges include cash advances at the greater of $10 or 5%, late and returned-payment fees up to $40, and Plan It fees up to 1.33% monthly. The issuer’s current agreement controls if terms change.
Is the Hilton Honors American Express Card worth it?
It can suit someone who regularly stays at Hilton properties, wants to earn Hilton points on everyday purchases, and values Silver status without paying an annual fee. Its strongest case is the combination of no annual fee, Hilton-focused earning, and an automatic entry-level status tier.
It is less compelling if you rarely stay at Hilton properties, prefer rewards that are not tied to one hotel program, or specifically want a Free Night Reward. Gold is possible, but only after $20,000 in eligible calendar-year spending and a processing delay; it is not an automatic card benefit. Compare the card’s terms with your own spending and travel habits rather than assuming points or status make it worthwhile.
Check the current welcome offer before applying
A past American Express no-annual-fee listing showed an offer of 100,000 Hilton Honors Bonus Points plus a $100 statement credit after $2,000 in eligible purchases during the first six months, ending July 29, 2026. That offer has expired and should not be assumed available. Check the live application page for the current offer, eligibility rules, and spending period: American Express no-annual-fee card listing.
