Hillthorn and Jusant share a mountain setting, but they are built for entirely different kinds of play. Hillthorn is a dark, card-based investigation about a missing child in a secretive mountain community. Jusant is an action-puzzle climbing game in which you scale an immense tower, choose routes, and uncover the traces of a vanished civilization.
Choose Hillthorn for deduction, wordless clue cards, social inference, and decisions made under a limited clock. Choose Jusant for tactile climbing, environmental storytelling, changing biomes, and a slower, meditative rhythm. If “mountain exploration” means physically climbing and traversing a mountain world to you, Jusant is the closer match. Hillthorn uses the mountain as the setting for an investigation.

What Hillthorn is
Raw Fury announced Hillthorn on July 9, 2026, describing it as “a hauntingly dark card-based investigation game” from developer Fool Moon. The case begins with a missing child in a secretive mountain community. You play an outsider trying to understand what happened while the community reveals information indirectly.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Hillthorn’s defining rule is that major story information is represented by cards. You investigate, explore, and sometimes communicate through those cards rather than relying on conventional spoken dialogue. The presentation is therefore deliberately wordless: meaning comes from images, combinations, context, and your interpretation of people and places.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The game also imposes a limited clock. You cannot follow every possible thread in one run, so selecting a lead is itself a strategic decision. The result is not simply “find the correct card”; it is deciding which questions deserve your limited attention and which evidence can be safely left unexplored.
How Hillthorn plays
- Collect and inspect evidence: clue cards contain the information needed to build an understanding of the disappearance.
- Manipulate relationships between clues: logic and intuition matter because the significance of one card can change when considered alongside another.
- Read the community: local interactions and visual signals replace a traditional dialogue-heavy detective interface.
- Spend your time carefully: the clock limits the number of investigative threads you can pursue.
The official Steam Community page documents a public demo and subsequent updates. Those updates include revised cinematics, a card-zoom function, clearer feedback when you take a wrong path, and interface and audio fixes. That makes the demo useful for judging whether the card language and time pressure suit you, although official materials do not establish a final release date or a final content scope.
Who should choose Hillthorn?
Hillthorn is the better fit if you enjoy deduction games in which interpretation matters as much as reflexes. It should appeal to players who like nonverbal storytelling, making inferences from incomplete information, and replaying decisions to pursue different leads. It is not primarily a climbing simulator: the mountain provides isolation, social tension, and secrets rather than a large traversal playground.

What Jusant is
DON’T NOD describes Jusant as an action-puzzle climbing game and a meditative journey to the top of an immeasurably tall tower. You control a climber who must learn the game’s climbing tools, choose practical routes, and watch a stamina meter while ascending.
The tower is divided into changing environments. Official descriptions refer to arid, windy slopes and bioluminescent tunnels among the biomes you encounter. Exploration is not just a matter of finding the next handhold: the surroundings contain clues about a civilization that has disappeared, and the act of climbing gradually reveals what happened to the world below.
Your companion, the Ballast, is made of water. Its ability to awaken nature helps expose clues and changes how you read the spaces around you. That companion gives the journey a second layer: progress comes from both physical ascent and restoring signs of life.

How Jusant plays
- Scout a route: look for holds, ledges, alternate paths, and places where climbing tools can change your approach.
- Manage stamina: climbing consumes stamina, so lingering on a wall or choosing an inefficient route can create unnecessary risk.
- Use climbing tools: mastering the equipment lets you handle different sections of the tower rather than relying on a single movement pattern.
- Explore side spaces: environmental details and optional discoveries help explain the vanished civilization.
- Work with the Ballast: awakening nature can reveal information that is not obvious during a straightforward ascent.
Jusant is intentionally low-combat and centered on movement, observation, and atmosphere. DON’T NOD’s official announcement summarizes the challenge clearly: “You will need to master climbing tools and watch your stamina to successfully navigate this tower.” The tension comes from committing to a route and maintaining control, not from fighting enemies.

Who should choose Jusant?
Jusant suits players who want to inhabit a landscape rather than solve a conventional case. Choose it if you value physical traversal, environmental clues, a peaceful soundtrack, and a journey that gives you time to look around. It is also the safer choice if you specifically want a game in which the mountain itself is the main space you explore.
Core loop: deduction versus traversal
The biggest difference is what each game asks you to pay attention to.
| Moment-to-moment question | Hillthorn | Jusant |
|---|---|---|
| Your immediate problem | Which clue, person, or lead should you investigate next? | Which route and climbing technique will get you safely farther up? |
| Main resource | Limited investigative time and the opportunity cost of pursuing one thread over another. | Stamina during climbs, plus the information you gain by exploring rather than taking the shortest route. |
| Primary skill | Pattern recognition, inference, and social reading. | Route finding, timing, tool use, and spatial awareness. |
| Failure or uncertainty | You may follow a wrong path or spend time on a less useful thread; demo updates add clearer wrong-path feedback. | A poor route or depleted stamina can make a climb harder, requiring better planning and control. |
| Reward for curiosity | Additional context and connections between cards. | Environmental clues, world history, and discoveries that explain the tower and its former inhabitants. |
Neither loop is simply “slower” or “faster” in every situation. Hillthorn can be calm while you examine evidence, but its clock creates pressure over the whole investigation. Jusant can feel tranquil between climbs, yet a difficult ascent demands concentration while stamina is being consumed.
Narrative delivery and mystery
Hillthorn: a mystery you assemble
Hillthorn’s narrative is intentionally indirect. Because the story is communicated through cards and visual interaction rather than spoken exposition, you assemble the case from fragments. The outsider perspective is important: you do not begin with complete knowledge of the community’s customs, relationships, or secrets.
This structure favors active interpretation. The game’s mystery is not only “what happened?” but also “what does this piece of evidence mean, and whose perspective does it represent?” The limited clock reinforces that design by making investigative priorities part of the narrative experience.

Jusant: a history embedded in place
Jusant puts its story into the tower and its ecosystems. Clues are found while moving through spaces that show how people once lived and what changed after the civilization vanished. The Ballast’s ability to awaken nature adds a visible contrast between abandoned environments and the life that can return.
This is a more observational form of mystery. You are not primarily interrogating a cast of suspects; you are reading architecture, landscape, remnants, and the relationship between the climber and the world. The soundtrack and biome changes support that quiet, exploratory mood.
Pace, atmosphere, and tension
Hillthorn’s pressure
Hillthorn creates tension through scarcity of attention. The clock means that even an interesting lead has a cost: following it may prevent you from pursuing another thread. That makes each run a set of investigative priorities rather than a promise that every question will be answered immediately.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The dark tone and secluded setting support a sense of unease. If you like stories where small social details may carry evidence, Hillthorn’s deliberate pace gives you room to form theories while still keeping the larger investigation moving.
Jusant’s calm
Jusant is designed as a meditative ascent. Its atmosphere comes from height, weather, sound, and the gradual transition between biomes. Stamina prevents the climb from becoming passive, but the overall rhythm is slower and more contemplative than a time-limited investigation.
The contrast is useful when choosing between them: Hillthorn asks you to manage what you investigate; Jusant asks you to manage how you move through space.

Accessibility and control options
Jusant has the more extensively documented accessibility feature set in the official material available for comparison. DON’T NOD’s FAQ lists the following options:
- No-stamina mode: removes stamina pressure from climbing.
- Simplified climbing: reduces the complexity of the climbing interaction.
- Jump assistance: helps with jumping actions.
- Simplified interactions: streamlines interactions outside the core climb.
- Rappel modification: changes how rappelling works.
- Colorblind filters: provides visual adjustments for color-vision differences.
The FAQ says Jusant can be played with mouse and keyboard, although the controls were designed with controllers in mind. If you prefer a controller-led climbing game or need to reduce stamina and input demands, check these settings before starting a long session.
Official Hillthorn materials reviewed for this comparison provide less detailed accessibility information. The Steam demo updates mention interface and audio fixes, but they do not establish an equivalent list of assistive modes. Players who require a particular accommodation should verify the current demo and store information before purchase.

The optional Jusant companion: The Art of Jusant
For readers drawn to Jusant’s visual world, DON’T NOD documents an official artbook titled The Art of Jusant. It is described as more than 300 pages with close to 500 illustrations, including character and storyboard material, 3D models, sets, and unused research.
The book is a companion to Jusant’s art direction rather than a substitute for the game. It is most relevant if you want to examine how the climber, Ballast, tower environments, and biomes were developed. DON’T NOD also documents a Ballast and Climber plushie and a physical vinyl soundtrack, although current stock and purchasing terms are not established here.
No similarly documented Hillthorn physical product is identified in the official materials available for this comparison; the confirmed way to sample its design is the public Steam demo.

Jusant is the right choice for most people searching specifically for a mountain exploration game because climbing, route-finding, and environmental discovery are its central systems. It also has the clearer platform history and the more fully documented accessibility options.
Hillthorn is the better choice when the word “exploration” means investigating people, clues, and competing theories. Its mountain is a setting for a wordless, time-limited mystery, and its card system rewards players who enjoy constructing meaning from fragments. They are complementary experiences, not direct substitutes: choose the one that matches whether you want to climb the mountain or solve what it is hiding.
