Hillthorn accessibility settings: how to play its wordless mystery comfortably

Hillthorn is planned to launch with ten accessibility features covering reading, color, camera comfort, sound, input, timing, pacing, and saving. You can enlarge clue-card text, use color alternatives, remove quick-time events, play with only a mouse or touch, adjust audio, save at any time, and investigate at your own pace. The game is scheduled for November 10, 2026 on Steam, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android, so the final menu and feature set could still change before release.

What Hillthorn is and why accessibility matters

Hillthorn is an upcoming dark, card-based investigation game from Fool Moon and Finnegan Motors, published by Raw Fury. Its missing-person mystery takes place in a secluded mountain community. Instead of spoken conversations, the story is presented through clue cards, visual details, and deductions that ask you to combine logic with intuition.

That format makes readability and input flexibility especially important. You may spend long periods examining small writing on cards, comparing visual states, or deciding what to investigate next. A player who cannot comfortably read dense text, distinguish certain colors, tolerate presentation effects, perform rapid inputs, or use a conventional controller should be able to adapt the experience through the settings documented for the planned release.

Steam currently lists ten accessibility features. They address different needs rather than providing one universal “easy mode”: visual clarity, color perception, camera comfort, audio configuration, input method, timing pressure, pacing, and interruptions are handled separately.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Hillthorn’s documented accessibility features

Feature What it changes Who may benefit
Save anytime Allows progress to be saved when you choose. Players who need frequent breaks, have unpredictable symptoms, or cannot finish a session in one sitting.
Adjustable text size Increases the size of writing on clue cards and interface labels. Players with low vision, reading fatigue, or a small-screen setup.
Color alternatives Provides alternatives when color is used to distinguish information. Players who have difficulty perceiving particular color differences.
Camera comfort Changes presentation or movement effects intended to make viewing more comfortable. Players who experience discomfort from motion or camera effects.
Custom volume controls Lets you set audio levels to suit your listening environment. Players who need to reduce particular sounds or balance the game against other audio.
Stereo sound Offers a stereo-output option for compatible listening setups. Players who need sound presented appropriately for their headphones, speakers, or device.
Playable without quick-time events Removes interactions that require a rapid, precisely timed response. Players with motor, reaction-time, fatigue, or anxiety-related barriers to timed prompts.
Mouse-only option Supports investigation using a mouse without requiring another primary input. Desktop players who prefer pointing and clicking or cannot use a keyboard comfortably.
Touch-only option Supports play through touch input alone. Players on phones, tablets, or touch-enabled systems who prefer direct tapping.
Playable at your own pace Reduces pressure to execute actions quickly while investigating. Players who need extra decision time, process information gradually, or take pauses.

These are the features Steam documents for the planned release. They do not establish that every setting will appear under exactly the same label on every platform.

Recommended setup before investigating

Use this order when configuring a new save. It starts with the settings that affect whether you can comfortably read and interpret clues, then moves to control and pacing.

  1. Set text size first. Open the accessibility or display settings and raise adjustable text size until a full clue card is readable without leaning toward the screen. Check both card writing and interface labels; a size that works for menus may still feel too small for longer evidence text.
  2. Choose a color alternative. If the default presentation separates clues, statuses, or selections by color, enable the alternative and test it on several cards. Do not rely on a single icon or sample screen: inspect a normal clue, a selected clue, and any state that appears disabled or completed.
  3. Configure camera comfort. Turn on the more comfortable camera presentation before beginning a long investigation if movement or visual effects cause strain. If you are unsure, play through the opening interaction for a few minutes and change the option as soon as discomfort appears.
  4. Remove quick-time events when timing is a barrier. Select the mode that makes Hillthorn playable without quick-time events. This is the appropriate choice when a prompt’s speed, rather than the underlying deduction, prevents you from progressing.
  5. Pick one primary input method. On a computer, select mouse-only if pointing and clicking is more reliable than combined keyboard and mouse input. On a phone or tablet, use touch-only. Keep the method that lets you inspect cards and select evidence without accidental presses.
  6. Set sound for your listening arrangement. Use custom volume controls to balance the game with your surroundings, then select stereo sound when your headphones or speakers are configured for stereo. If you use a single-sided or otherwise nonstandard listening setup, choose the output that makes important audio easiest to follow.
  7. Enable save-anytime and own-pace play as needed. Save before stopping, after a useful deduction, or whenever you need a break. The own-pace option is useful when you want to examine every card without feeling rushed.

Making a wordless mystery easier to read

Start with physical display conditions

Accessibility settings work best when the screen itself is configured well. Place the device at a comfortable distance, remove glare, and use a display brightness that keeps card text distinct from the background. On a phone, rotate or reposition the device so your hand does not cover the evidence you are trying to inspect. These are practical adjustments rather than Hillthorn-specific options, but they determine how much benefit you receive from text-size and color settings.

Read cards in a repeatable order

Because Hillthorn communicates its case through visual investigation rather than voiced exposition, create a consistent reading routine. Read the card title or identifying label first, then the body text, then any visual marks or relationship indicators. Pause before moving to another card so you can decide whether the information is evidence, a lead, or background context. The own-pace setting supports this approach by removing pressure to perform quickly.

Do not infer missing audio description

The documented feature list does not promise screen-reader support, spoken descriptions of card art, or a text-to-speech mode. If you need those functions, check the final platform listing and accessibility menu after launch rather than assuming that a larger font or color alternative will provide them.

Reducing timing and motion demands

When to disable quick-time events

Quick-time events are short prompts that usually ask for a rapid input. Hillthorn’s planned no-quick-time-event option is important because it separates the deduction from reaction speed. Use it if you miss prompts despite understanding what the game wants, if rapid movement causes pain, or if timed actions make the investigation stressful. The setting should be chosen before a difficult sequence; do not wait until a failed prompt has already interrupted your progress.

When camera comfort helps

Camera-comfort controls target presentation or movement effects, not the complexity of the mystery. Enable them if visual motion makes you dizzy, gives you headaches, or makes it harder to focus on cards. If symptoms continue, stop playing and return only when your eyes and balance feel normal. The available evidence does not specify which individual effects the option changes, so treat it as a general comfort control rather than assuming it is a full motion-sickness reduction mode.

Use own-pace play for processing time

Own-pace play is different from removing quick-time events. A no-QTE mode addresses a specific timed interaction; own-pace play addresses pressure during the broader investigation. You may use both, or only the one that matches your needs. Select own-pace when you need to reread a clue, compare several cards, or pause between deductions.

Choosing mouse-only or touch-only controls

Mouse-only on a computer

The mouse-only option is intended for players who want to point, click, and inspect cards without relying on a keyboard. It can also help when holding a keyboard position is uncomfortable. Test every basic action in the opening section: opening a card, selecting a clue, returning to the case view, and confirming a choice. If one action still requires a second device, that would be a limitation of the final implementation rather than something established by the current listing.

Touch-only on phones and tablets

Touch-only input is suited to the announced iOS and Android versions and to any supported touch-enabled device. Use a light tap rather than a long press unless the game instructs otherwise, and keep the display free of moisture or gloves that reduce accuracy. Larger text can make cards easier to read, but it may also reduce how much information fits on screen; adjust the size until reading remains comfortable without excessive scrolling.

What is not confirmed

The available release information does not confirm remappable controls, a controller mode, switch-access compatibility, or a one-handed layout. An earlier prototype mentioned keyboard and mouse input, one-button support, an interactive tutorial, and color-blind-friendly presentation, but prototype features are development evidence, not a guarantee that they will ship unchanged.

Audio options and a silent-story presentation

“Wordless” means Hillthorn’s mystery unfolds without spoken dialogue; it does not mean the game has no audio. Steam lists custom volume controls and stereo sound, so you can tailor output to your environment and listening equipment. Those controls may be useful even when you read every clue: lowering distracting channels, balancing the game against a shared room, or choosing the output arrangement that works with your headphones can reduce fatigue.

No source currently establishes subtitle customization beyond the language information shown in the platform listing, audio descriptions, visual sound indicators, or a setting that makes every sound optional. Players who cannot use audio should therefore verify the final build’s information design rather than assuming that all necessary clues are duplicated visually.

Saving and managing interruptions

Save-anytime support is particularly useful for an investigation game because reading and deduction do not always fit a fixed session. Save when you reach a natural stopping point, before experimenting with a conclusion, and whenever symptoms or fatigue require a pause. If you share a device or have limited access to it, this option also reduces the risk that an unfinished line of reasoning will be lost.

Saving at any time does not necessarily mean that every action can be undone or that multiple independent slots are available. The documented feature confirms the timing of saves, not the number of slots, rollback behavior, cloud synchronization, or recovery from a damaged save.

Prototype features versus release commitments

An earlier prototype page listed color-blind-friendly presentation, an interactive tutorial, and one-button accessibility support, alongside keyboard and mouse input. Those details show that the developers explored additional accommodations, but the page identifies the build as a prototype. Treat them as possibilities until the release version or a current platform listing confirms them.

The planned November 10, 2026 launch date applies to Steam, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android according to an official community announcement. Steam also describes the game as planned for November 2026. Menus, platform parity, and individual options can change before that date, so recheck the final version if a particular accommodation is essential to you.

What Hillthorn’s current evidence does not establish

  • Screen-reader or text-to-speech support.
  • Subtitle controls beyond the language information shown by the platform listing.
  • A dedicated high-contrast mode.
  • Remappable controls, switch access, or confirmed controller support.
  • Audio description or visual indicators for every sound.
  • The exact camera effects changed by camera comfort.
  • The number of save slots, cloud-save behavior, or cross-platform save transfer.

These are not claims that the final game lacks those features; they are items not established by the currently documented settings. If one is necessary for you to play, verify it in the final accessibility menu or with the platform-specific support information before purchase.

A practical decision guide

Your main barrier Start with Then check
Small or tiring text Adjustable text size Card readability at your normal seating distance
Difficulty distinguishing colors Color alternatives Selected, completed, and inactive states
Motion discomfort Camera comfort Whether symptoms improve during a longer card-reading session
Rapid prompts No-quick-time-event mode Whether any remaining action still demands speed
Keyboard or controller limitations Mouse-only or touch-only Every basic investigation action on your device
Listening limitations or a shared room Custom volume controls Stereo output with your headphones or speakers
Need for pauses Save anytime Own-pace play for reading and deduction

Bottom line for players planning ahead

Hillthorn’s announced accessibility settings cover the most immediate demands of a visual, card-based mystery: reading the evidence, distinguishing visual information, tolerating presentation effects, choosing an input method, avoiding rapid prompts, controlling sound, and stopping safely. The strongest documented combination for a slower, low-pressure play style is adjustable text size, color alternatives when needed, camera comfort, no quick-time events, mouse-only or touch-only input, custom audio, save-anytime support, and own-pace play.
