The phenomenon is clear-air turbulence (CAT): abrupt, sometimes violent buffeting caused mainly by wind shear and turbulent eddies in otherwise transparent air. It is most often associated with jet-stream boundaries and other sharp changes in wind at cruising altitude, so a clear view from the window does not guarantee a smooth ride.
What clear-air turbulence is
The National Weather Service defines clear-air turbulence as “sudden severe turbulence occurring in cloudless regions that causes violent buffeting of aircraft.” FAA aviation-weather guidance places CAT mainly between about 20,000 and 50,000 feet, near wind shear around the core of a jet stream.

Wind shear means neighboring layers or masses of air move at different speeds or directions. Around jet-stream edges, upper-level fronts, the tropopause and mountain-wave flows, that shear can break into waves and irregular eddies. An aircraft may then enter a turbulent pocket with little or no visual warning.
More broadly, turbulence is air movement that normally cannot be seen and may occur unexpectedly. Jet streams, pressure patterns, fronts, mountains and thunderstorms can all produce it. Clear-air turbulence is the subset that occurs without the cloud or precipitation cues associated with many other forms.

Why a clear sky can make turbulence harder to avoid
Aircraft weather radar detects precipitation and water droplets, making it valuable around thunderstorms and heavy weather. CAT may contain none of those radar-reflective particles. A transparent region can therefore be turbulent even when radar shows no storm ahead.
Crews compensate with forecast models, upper-air observations, dispatcher analysis and reports from aircraft already in the area. The FAA supports turbulence nowcasts developed with the National Center for Atmospheric Research and updated at 15-minute intervals for tactical decisions. NOAA’s updated aviation forecast system also targets clear-air, mountain-wave, low-level and in-cloud turbulence.

These tools identify risk zones rather than every individual eddy. A forecast can indicate a jet-stream boundary or mountain-wave area, but a small turbulent pocket may still be encountered with little lead time.

Where different kinds of turbulence come from
| Type | Primary source | Visibility and warning cues | Typical altitude | How crews respond |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clear-air turbulence | Wind shear, especially near jet-stream boundaries, upper fronts and the tropopause | Cloudless and often invisible; radar may not show it | About 20,000–50,000 feet in FAA guidance | Use forecasts and pilot reports; request altitude or route changes and apply approved speed/configuration procedures |
| Convective turbulence | Thunderstorms and rising, unstable air | Clouds, precipitation and storm activity can provide visual or radar cues | Not stated in the cited guidance | Avoid storm cells and their hazardous surroundings using radar, forecasts and air-traffic coordination |
| Mountain-wave turbulence | Air flowing over and downwind of terrain | May occur without obvious lenticular clouds | Not stated in the cited guidance | Use terrain and wave forecasts, pilot reports and route or altitude adjustments |
| Wake-vortex turbulence | Rotating air left by another aircraft | Usually not visible; linked to traffic spacing and flight path | Not stated in the cited guidance | Maintain required separation and follow air-traffic-control instructions |
How dangerous is it?
FAA data for U.S. Part 121 carriers show that 152 of 420 accidents from 2008 through 2022—36 percent—involved turbulence, making it the leading defining event in that period. Every turbulence-related accident in that summary involved at least one serious injury.

- PATENTED DOUBLE SUPPORT: Overlapping arms support the head, neck and chin while resting upright on airplanes, in cars or at home.
- 3 COMFORTABLE POSITIONS: Place the arms under the chin, fold the pillow for side support, or rotate it for combined front and side support.
- FITS MOST ADULTS: Large fits necks up to 16 inches. Choose X-Large for a neck circumference of 16 inches or more.
- SOFT, FLEXIBLE COMFORT: Cozy microfleece, smooth microsuede and bounce-back filling shape easily for balanced comfort and support.
- WASHABLE & TRAVEL-READY: The entire pillow is machine washable and includes a carry bag and snap loop for attaching to luggage.
Those figures are regulatory accident categories, not the probability that a particular passenger will be hurt on a flight. Most turbulence encounters do not damage the aircraft. The main cabin danger is being thrown from a seat or striking the interior while unrestrained. The FAA says fatal turbulence-related accidents involving Part 121 carriers are exceedingly rare, although fatal events have occurred among some general-aviation and commuter or on-demand operators.

Forecasting and dispatch planning
Dispatchers and crews combine numerical weather models, upper-air observations, turbulence products and recent pilot reports to identify likely shear zones before departure and during the flight. NOAA products and FAA-supported nowcasts provide updated guidance as conditions evolve.

Pilot reports (PIREPs)
When an aircraft encounters turbulence, the crew can report the time, position, altitude and intensity. Those PIREPs are distributed to following crews and air-traffic facilities, giving others a real-world warning where forecast resolution is limited. FAA aeronautical-information guidance defines reporting practices and intensity categories for clear-air turbulence.
Altitude, route and speed changes
A crew may ask air traffic control for a different altitude or route to leave a turbulent layer. If rough air is expected, pilots slow or configure the aircraft according to the aircraft’s approved procedures. They can also suspend cabin service so flight attendants and passengers are seated before the encounter.

What passengers should do
- Keep the lap belt fastened whenever seated. Wear it low and snug, even when the seat-belt sign is off. This is the simplest protection against an unexpected jolt.
- Secure loose objects. Stow bags and personal items so they cannot become projectiles or block an aisle when service is stopped.
- Follow the crew immediately. If flight attendants pause service or instruct everyone to sit, return to your seat and buckle up rather than waiting for visible clouds.
- Do not judge safety by the view outside. Clear windows can coexist with strong wind shear; the absence of clouds is not evidence of smooth air.
Flight attendants face extra exposure because their duties keep them out of their seats. Securing the cabin before expected rough air reduces opportunities for injury to both crew and passengers.
Why a sudden “drop” can happen on a clear day
When an aircraft crosses a sharp shear zone or eddy, its motion can change abruptly and the cabin may feel as if it has dropped. The sensation reflects rapid changes in the surrounding air and aircraft acceleration, not a requirement for a visible hole in the sky. CAT can therefore feel dramatic while remaining invisible from the window.
Quick Recap
What to remember
- Clear-air turbulence is invisible wind-shear turbulence, commonly encountered near jet streams, upper-level fronts, the tropopause and mountain waves.
- Weather radar can miss CAT because it does not require precipitation or other radar-reflective particles.
- Forecasts, 15-minute nowcasts, dispatcher coordination and PIREPs help crews avoid or reduce exposure, but no system locates every small turbulent pocket in advance.
- For passengers, staying buckled whenever seated is the most effective practical precaution.
