Hideo Kojima has expressed mixed feelings about AI changing creative work, saying he is uneasy when it alters choices made deliberately by an artist. The comments, reported by GamesRadar from Koji10 episode 36, surfaced amid debate over NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 and examples involving Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. They do not amount to a blanket rejection of AI or a claim that all AI replaces artists.
What Kojima said about AI and artistic intent
GamesRadar reports that Kojima acknowledged possible uses for AI, including restoring old photographs or adding color, but questioned systems that change creative work without understanding why its creator made particular choices. His example was a deliberately selected lighting setup: an alteration might look different from the original intention.

As rendered in English by GamesRadar, Kojima said, “As a creator, I have mixed feelings about this technology.” He also said he might feel differently if he controlled the AI in his own work, while adding that he was unsure. These are the outlet’s translations of remarks attributed to him on Koji10 episode 36; they should not be treated as independently verified transcript wording.

Why DLSS 5 prompted the discussion
NVIDIA describes DLSS 5 as a real-time neural-rendering model that adds photoreal lighting and materials to pixels. The company’s announcement frames the system as combining hand-crafted rendering with generative AI while preserving artist control. That is NVIDIA’s positioning, not an independent finding about how the technology affects authorship or creative control.

The disagreement is about more than whether an image looks better. NVIDIA emphasizes the tools and control artists may retain; Kojima’s reported concern is whether a system can respect the reasons behind an artist’s choices. Those are different framings, and neither establishes a general consensus about AI’s role in creative work.

The cited official materials do not establish that Death Stranding 2: On the Beach launched with DLSS 5. The game’s PC feature announcement from KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS lists NVIDIA DLSS alongside AMD FSR and Intel XeSS upscaling and frame-generation technologies. NVIDIA’s separate game announcement specifies DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation on GeForce RTX 50 Series and DLSS Super Resolution on GeForce RTX GPUs.
Those named game features are distinct from DLSS 5, which NVIDIA announced separately as a neural-rendering model. The fact that the game supports DLSS does not show that it supports DLSS 5. Kojima Productions also says ray tracing is an optional PC setting aimed at high-end hardware, not a requirement for the core experience.
What the debate says about creative control
Kojima’s reported position is qualified: he recognizes potential uses for AI, but is wary of uncontrolled changes to a work when a system cannot account for the creator’s intent. His comments do not show that he opposes every use of AI, nor do they establish that he believes AI will replace all artists.
There is relevant context in a PlayStation interview about the sequel, where Kojima discussed giving players more choice and freedom in its design. That interview provides background on his approach to the game; it is not evidence for the AI remarks reported from Koji10.
