Hideo Kojima Visits Sony City After Sony Steps Away From Physint Funding

Hideo Kojima’s October 13, 2026 visit to Sony City in Tokyo is the clearest public sign yet that the reported end of Sony’s funding for Physint did not turn into a personal feud. Kojima has said he felt shocked by the decision but not angry, and his photo post shows continued professional goodwill. It does not establish a new Sony agreement, confirm a PlayStation release, or reveal what happened inside the building.

What happened to Physint?

Physint was announced in January 2024 as Kojima’s return to the action-espionage genre in collaboration with Sony and PlayStation. According to a September 2026 report by The Washington Post, Sony told Kojima Productions during a June 2026 Zoom call that it would stop funding the game.

That report described a serious business shock for Kojima Productions. The Tokyo studio had roughly 200 employees, and the loss of funding raised concerns about whether the operation could continue at its existing size. Kojima responded by returning to work immediately, moving some staff to the OD project and keeping a smaller group assigned to Physint.

The available reporting does not show that Physint was definitively cancelled. Instead, Microsoft and Xbox were reported as taking over the game’s publishing role. That is a change in financing and publishing, not proof that development has ended.

Why Kojima’s Sony City visit drew attention

On October 13, Play3.de reported that Kojima posted photographs from Sony City in Tokyo with the caption, “I have visited Sony City.” The understated post immediately produced memes and speculation because it followed reports that Sony had withdrawn from Physint.

The visit is consistent with Kojima’s public comments about the split. In an interview reported by The Washington Post, he said: “I was just shocked and surprised. I didn’t have any anger or sadness. I was just thinking, ‘What should I do?’” Coverage of his September 2026 IGN interview also quoted him saying, “So I have no bad feelings towards them.”

Those statements support the limited conclusion that Kojima is not publicly treating Sony as an enemy. They do not identify the purpose of his visit. There is no confirmed information that he met Sony executives, negotiated a new contract, discussed a PlayStation launch or restored Sony’s financing.

What the change means for PlayStation and Xbox

The publisher change makes Xbox the reported commercial partner for Physint, but the sources available here do not establish an Xbox-exclusive release. Likewise, Sony’s withdrawal from funding does not prove that PlayStation has been removed from the game’s eventual platform lineup. Until Kojima Productions, Microsoft, Sony or another authorized party announces platforms, any definitive claim about where Physint will launch is premature.

The practical effect for development is clearer: Kojima Productions had to reorganize staff after losing Sony’s support. Some employees moved to OD, while a smaller team remained on Physint. That arrangement indicates the project continued in some form after the funding decision, although it says nothing certain about its completion date or scope.

Why “no hard feelings” is the defensible reading

The phrase describes an interpretation, not a confirmed meeting outcome. Kojima’s own comments explicitly reject anger and bad feelings, and his public appearance at Sony City is compatible with maintaining a working relationship. At the same time, a photograph outside or inside a company facility cannot prove that the companies have resumed financing or that a new deal is imminent.

Kojima Productions has also pushed back against the broader rumor cycle. Its statement that online claims were “unsubstantiated speculation” is a warning not to treat alleged budgets, deadlines, commercial results or private negotiations as established facts. The reliable picture is narrower: Sony funding reportedly ended, Xbox became the reported publisher, and Kojima has remained publicly cordial.

What to watch next

  • An official announcement identifying Physint’s publisher and platforms.
  • A release window or development update from Kojima Productions or its publishing partner.
  • Clarification of whether Sony has any continuing role beyond the original collaboration.
  • Evidence that the Sony City visit concerned Physint rather than another project or ordinary business.

Until one of those points is confirmed, the Sony City photos should be read as a signal of professional civility, not as proof that Sony has reversed its decision or that Physint is returning to a PlayStation-funded plan.
