Hideo Kojima is not returning to PlayStation with PHYSINT. PlayStation Studios cancelled its involvement in June 2026, and Xbox announced on September 9 that it will publish the action-espionage game with Kojima Productions. The project remains in development, but its release date, price and final platform lineup have not been announced.
What happened to Kojima’s PlayStation spy game?
PHYSINT began as a Sony and Kojima Productions collaboration announced in January 2024. Kojima presented it as a return to the action-espionage genre, the type of project that made his name in games.

That arrangement ended in mid-June 2026. Kojima said PlayStation Studios unexpectedly notified Kojima Productions that it would cancel the project. The statement was reported by Variety on September 9, 2026, the same day Xbox disclosed its new publishing partnership.
Kojima Productions then spent three months seeking another partner. It selected Xbox, which will now publish PHYSINT alongside Kojima Productions. The change is therefore a business and platform-partnership switch from Sony to Microsoft—not a Kojima homecoming to PlayStation.

Who is publishing PHYSINT now?
Xbox’s September 9 announcement says Microsoft and Kojima Productions will publish PHYSINT together. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said creators can choose where and how to bring ideas to life and that Xbox is honored Kojima chose to work with the company.
Kojima said the team remains committed to redefining the action-espionage genre for players worldwide. Neither announcement describes the cancellation’s financial, scheduling or creative reasons beyond Kojima’s account that PlayStation Studios issued the notice unexpectedly.

Is PHYSINT an Xbox exclusive?
There is no official confirmation that PHYSINT will be an Xbox exclusive. Xbox has not announced a complete platform list, and the partnership announcement does not confirm Xbox consoles, PC, cloud distribution or any other specific version. It also does not announce a PlayStation 5 or future PlayStation 6 release.
That leaves the platform situation open:
| Question | Confirmed information |
|---|---|
| Publisher relationship | Xbox and Kojima Productions will publish PHYSINT together. |
| PlayStation’s role | PlayStation Studios cancelled its involvement in mid-June 2026. |
| Release timing | No launch date has been announced. |
| Price or edition | No price or retail edition has been announced. |
| Platform availability | No final platform lineup has been announced. |
Until a future official announcement specifies systems, calling the game an Xbox exclusive—or promising a PS5 or PS6 version—would go beyond the information currently available.

Why did Kojima leave PlayStation?
The documented sequence is straightforward: PlayStation Studios cancelled its participation, Kojima Productions searched for a new partner for three months, and Xbox accepted the publishing role. Public statements do not establish whether the decision involved budget, strategy, schedule, creative direction or another internal issue.
Kojima Productions is still developing the game, so the cancellation did not end PHYSINT. It changed the company responsible for the publishing relationship and potentially the systems on which the finished project will appear.

What else is included in the Xbox–Kojima partnership?
Xbox described the relationship as broader than one game. Its announcement says the companies will expand their collaboration beyond games into film and television. Xbox also referenced its continuing relationship with Kojima Productions on OD, although it did not provide new release details for that project in the PHYSINT announcement.

What can PlayStation players play while they wait?
The relevant prior physical Kojima–PlayStation release is Death Stranding 2: On the Beach for PlayStation 5. It is separate from PHYSINT and does not indicate that the new action-espionage project will return to Sony hardware.
For collectors, merchandise, art books and future Xbox or Kojima products should be treated as prospective items until an official program confirms the product, region, inventory and release terms. No such PHYSINT retail details were included in the September announcement.
What readers should watch for next
- An official platform announcement identifying the consoles, PC storefronts or services supported.
- A release window or date, followed by pricing and retail-edition information.
- New details about the game’s design, cast, development status or trailer.
- Clarification of how the film and television collaboration will operate.
For now, the accurate headline is that Kojima’s PlayStation-backed project changed publishers after Sony’s cancellation. PHYSINT is still being made, but neither a PlayStation return nor Xbox exclusivity has been confirmed.
