Hidclass.sys Solved: Diagnose and Fix HIDCLASS Driver Errors in Windows

hidclass.sys is Windows’ shared Human Interface Device (HID) class driver. It is used by keyboards, mice, touchpads, touchscreens, sensors, game controllers and other input devices, but it is rarely the actual source of a failure. A blue screen or Device Manager warning that names HIDCLASS usually points to a problem in the device, its USB/Bluetooth/I2C/GPIO/SPI transport, firmware, parent controller, report descriptor or a client utility.

The reliable fix is to identify the affected device and transport, record the exact error, then update, roll back or repair the vendor component responsible. Do not download a replacement “hidclass.sys” file from a third-party site.

What hidclass.sys does

Microsoft describes the Windows HID stack as being built on the class driver named hidclass.sys. It is a system-supplied function and bus driver for the HID device setup class. The class driver connects HID clients to transport minidrivers, allowing Windows and applications to communicate with many kinds of human-interface hardware through a common model.

That shared design is why the same filename can appear in very different failures. HID clients may be drivers, services or applications, and they can belong to keyboards, mice, touch hardware, sensors, buttons, controllers and specialized input devices. The filename identifies the common class layer, not a particular manufacturer or physical component.

A crash that cites HIDCLASS can therefore originate below the class driver (for example, a controller, cable or firmware problem), beside it (a malformed HID report descriptor), or above it (a vendor utility or other client sending invalid data). The name in a stop message is evidence about where Windows detected the failure, not proof that the Microsoft file itself is damaged.

Is a hidclass.sys error dangerous?

The driver is a normal Windows component. A warning or blue screen means that Windows encountered an invalid response, timeout or other failure while handling an HID device; it does not, by itself, identify malware or prove that the system file is corrupt. Avoid replacing or deleting the file. A random replacement can be the wrong Windows build, can break the driver stack and can hide the real hardware or firmware defect.

Use the exact stop code, Device Manager status and hardware ID to decide what to repair. Microsoft notes that Device Manager errors can indicate hardware failure or the need for a new driver. Those details are more useful than the generic filename.

Common causes, organized by failure layer

Layer What can fail Clues and appropriate owner
Device hardware A keyboard, mouse, touchpad, touchscreen, sensor, controller, cable, hub or connector is defective or intermittently disconnected. Only one peripheral fails, the problem follows that device or cable, or the device disappears from Device Manager. Test the hardware and involve the device manufacturer if necessary.
Transport The USB, Bluetooth, Bluetooth LE, I2C, GPIO or SPI path cannot deliver valid HID data. Failures correlate with a port, radio, sleep/wake event or a particular controller. Check the transport and its chipset package rather than searching for a generic HIDCLASS download.
Firmware or parent controller Embedded-controller, touchpad, sensor, Bluetooth or chipset firmware returns bad data or times out. The issue begins after a firmware, BIOS, chipset or Windows change, or several devices under one controller fail. Use the computer or device maker’s firmware and parent-driver package.
Report descriptor The device describes its reports incorrectly or changes a descriptor Windows cannot validate. HID-over-I2C traces may show descriptor-read or validation errors. The device or firmware owner must correct the descriptor.
Client software A vendor service, remapping utility or other HID client mishandles reports. The crash starts after installing one utility and stops when that device or software is isolated. Remove or update the utility using the vendor’s instructions.
Power management A device fails after sleep, wake or selective-suspend transitions. Symptoms are intermittent and commonly affect USB. Review recent power-setting or driver changes and test with the affected device directly connected.

Know the transport before changing drivers

Windows supplies separate paths for different HID transports. Microsoft recommends using the included drivers for supported transports listed below. The names are useful when you read a Device Manager hierarchy or an OEM package:

Transport Windows component Typical devices or path
USB Hidusb.sys Wired keyboards, mice, controllers and many external input devices.
Bluetooth Hidbth.sys Classic Bluetooth input peripherals.
Bluetooth Low Energy HidBthLE.dll Bluetooth LE keyboards, buttons, sensors and similar devices.
I2C Hidi2c.sys Internal touchpads, touchscreens and sensors connected through an I2C controller.
GPIO Hidinterrupt.sys HID devices using a GPIO interrupt path.
SPI HidSpi.sys Devices connected through an SPI transport.

Choosing the wrong package can leave the underlying problem unchanged. A USB device does not need an unrelated I2C package, and an internal touchpad may depend on a chipset or firmware package supplied by the computer maker rather than a standalone “HID driver.”

Evidence-first diagnosis

  1. Record the failure exactly. Write down the blue-screen stop code, the time it occurred, whether it happened during boot, use, sleep or wake, and whether input stopped before the restart. For a non-crash error, copy the complete Device Manager status text.
  2. Identify the affected device. Open Device Manager, expand categories such as Human Interface Devices, Keyboards, Mice and other pointing devices, Sensors, Bluetooth, Universal Serial Bus controllers and the relevant system-controller category. Look for a warning icon, a device that vanishes, or a device whose status changes when you unplug the suspected peripheral.
  3. Capture the hardware ID. In the device’s Properties, open Details, choose Hardware Ids and record the values. The ID lets the computer or device manufacturer match the correct driver and firmware.
  4. Check provider and date. In Properties, open the Driver tab and note the provider, version and date. A recent change is an important clue; an old date alone is not proof that the driver is wrong.
  5. Map the transport and parent. Follow the device’s position in Device Manager to determine whether it is attached by USB, Bluetooth, Bluetooth LE, I2C, GPIO or SPI. Note the parent controller and chipset because a parent-driver failure can affect several child devices.
  6. Review recent changes. Correlate the first failure with Windows Update, an OEM driver or firmware update, a BIOS change, a new peripheral, a hub or cable, a power-management change, or newly installed input software.
  7. Separate one-device symptoms from system-wide symptoms. If another keyboard or mouse works while one device fails, concentrate on that device, its cable, receiver, firmware and utility. If every HID device fails, investigate the shared controller, parent driver, Windows change or firmware affecting the platform.

Manual fixes to try in a safe order

1. Test the physical path

For USB equipment, connect the device directly to a different port, bypass a hub or docking station, and try a known-good cable when the cable is detachable. For a wireless device, replace or recharge its battery, bring the receiver closer, and test another known-good peripheral. For an internal touchpad or touchscreen, note whether the failure is limited to sleep/wake or occurs continuously. These tests do not prove a component is good, but they quickly show whether the symptom follows a port, cable or device.

2. Use Device Manager’s documented actions

  1. Right-click the affected device and choose Properties. Read the status code and message before changing anything.
  2. Use the available Troubleshoot action when Windows offers one, and apply only changes that match the reported device.
  3. On the Driver tab, use Update Driver and point Windows to the correct OEM package when you have downloaded it from the computer or device manufacturer.
  4. If the problem began immediately after a driver change, use Roll Back Driver when that option is available. Record the previous version so you can explain the result to support.
  5. If the installation is clearly damaged, choose Uninstall Device, restart Windows and allow the appropriate in-box or OEM driver to be detected again. Do this only after recording the hardware ID and obtaining the correct package, because an internal device may become difficult to use until its parent driver is restored.

Do not select a package merely because its name contains “HID.” Match the hardware ID, Windows edition and transport. Microsoft’s included transport drivers are the intended baseline for supported USB, Bluetooth, I2C, GPIO and SPI paths.

3. Install the manufacturer’s parent, chipset and firmware updates

HIDClass installation relies on hardware IDs and parent drivers supplied by the vendor. Visit the support page for the exact computer, motherboard or peripheral model and compare the offered chipset, input, Bluetooth, touch, sensor, BIOS and firmware packages with the versions you recorded. Apply one relevant package at a time and restart when its instructions require it. If a failure began after a firmware update, use the vendor’s documented rollback or recovery procedure rather than forcing an older file.

4. Check power-management changes

USB HID selective suspend is supported on Windows Vista and later. Consequently, a USB symptom that appears only after idle, sleep or wake can be power-management related. First test with the device directly connected and with any recently changed power setting returned to its previous value. If the OEM documents a per-device power option, follow that guidance and test one change at a time. Do not make broad registry changes before you have established that the failure follows a suspend or resume transition.

5. Isolate software clients

If the blue screen started after installing a button-remapping tool, macro utility, touchpad enhancement or vendor control service, disable or uninstall that one component using its normal uninstaller and retest. If the issue disappears, obtain an updated version from the software maker or leave the component removed. Keep the physical device connected during the test so you can distinguish a client problem from a hardware problem.

Transport-specific checks

USB

Test another port and another cable, remove hubs and docks from the path, and compare behavior with a second USB HID device. If several devices on one controller fail, update the computer maker’s chipset or USB controller package and inspect the controller’s Device Manager status. Intermittent failures after idle should be evaluated alongside selective-suspend settings.

Bluetooth and Bluetooth LE

Determine whether the failure affects one paired device or every Bluetooth input device. For one device, remove the pairing, restart the Bluetooth adapter, and pair it again according to the device maker’s instructions. For several devices, investigate the Bluetooth adapter’s parent driver and firmware. Classic Bluetooth uses Hidbth.sys; Bluetooth LE uses HidBthLE.dll, so the correct adapter package matters.

I2C, GPIO and SPI

Internal touchpads, touchscreens and sensors often depend on a controller and firmware package that is specific to the platform. A generic HID update is unlikely to correct a controller timeout or a bad descriptor. Capture the hardware ID, parent controller and OEM model, then install the matching chipset, serial-IO, touch or firmware package supplied for that platform.

When HID-over-I2C needs tracing

If the failure is reproducible on an HID-over-I2C device and ordinary driver or firmware checks do not identify it, Microsoft recommends collecting a trace with BusesTrace and analyzing HIDI2C.SYS and HIDCLASS.SYS ETW/WPP events. Reproduce the failure, or capture a boot trace when the device fails during startup, then preserve the trace with the stop code, hardware ID and driver versions.

Interpret the event type before assigning blame:

  • Descriptor-read or descriptor-validation errors: the device firmware or report descriptor may not meet HID expectations. The device or firmware owner must correct it.
  • Controller timeouts: investigate the I2C controller, parent driver, power state and platform firmware.
  • Transport or firmware errors: provide the trace to the computer or peripheral manufacturer so it can match the failure to its controller and firmware version.
  • Events that implicate a client after valid reports arrive: isolate the vendor service or application that consumes the reports.

HIDCLASS traces can expose report-descriptor validation errors that are invisible in a basic Device Manager view. A trace is especially valuable when multiple repairs have changed symptoms without identifying the failing layer.

When to stop troubleshooting and escalate

Contact the computer or device manufacturer when the same hardware ID repeatedly returns a status error, firmware installation fails, an internal device disappears from the bus, or traces show descriptor or controller faults. Provide the exact stop code, Device Manager status, hardware ID, Windows version and build, transport, parent controller, driver provider and date, recent changes, and a description of whether the issue follows the device or affects all HID hardware.

Replace a keyboard, mouse, cable or receiver only after testing shows that the fault follows that component or the manufacturer confirms a hardware defect. If only one peripheral fails while others remain stable, replacing the entire Windows installation or manually replacing hidclass.sys is disproportionate and can create new problems.

Mistakes that prolong HIDCLASS errors

  • Downloading a “fixed” hidclass.sys file instead of identifying the device and transport.
  • Installing a driver for a similar model without matching the hardware ID.
  • Updating several unrelated drivers at once, which removes the ability to identify the change that helped or hurt.
  • Ignoring the parent controller, firmware and power state because the stop message names HIDCLASS.
  • Replacing working input hardware before testing another port, cable, hub, receiver or computer.
  • Making a global power or registry change without first proving that the failure is tied to suspend or resume.

As an optional shortcut after these manual checks, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices, identify outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install only official drivers, show current and recommended versions, back up and restore drivers, and schedule scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; its 2-day free trial requires no credit card, followed by a subscription. Results vary, and no utility repairs every HID crash.
