Short answer: The HGST Ultrastar He10 10TB is a 3.5-inch, 7,200-RPM helium enterprise hard drive family, but “He10” alone is not enough to confirm compatibility. The exact model number determines whether a drive uses SATA or SAS and whether it is 512e or 4Kn. Match those details to your NAS or server before buying; for a used drive, also verify its health and the seller’s return terms.
What the He10 is—and what “10TB” identifies
Western Digital’s datasheet describes the HGST Ultrastar He10 as a helium-platform enterprise HDD family in 3.5-inch form, with 10TB and 8TB capacities. A 10TB label refers to decimal capacity; formatted capacity available to an operating system will be lower.

There are SATA and SAS versions, with more than one sector format and security-mode suffix. A listing that says only “He10” does not establish that the drive will work in your system. Check the complete model number printed on the drive label, not just the family name.

How to decode the model number
WD’s He10 datasheet lists SATA families HUH7210xxALE60y and HUH7210xxALN60y, and SAS families HUH7210xxAL420y and HUH7210xxAL520y. Its model-code example is: “Example: HUH7210xxAL420y = 7200 RPM, xxTB, 4Kn SAS 12Gb/s.” Here, xx represents capacity and y represents security-mode details; confirm the exact drive label and documentation rather than inferring the entire configuration from a shortened listing.
- E6: SATA 6Gb/s, 512e.
- N6: SATA 6Gb/s, 4Kn.
- 42: SAS 12Gb/s, 4Kn.
- 52: SAS 12Gb/s, 512e.
A concrete 10TB SATA model example is HUH721010ALE600. The datasheet documents the family and these model patterns; the actual suffix and security mode still matter when evaluating a particular unit. See WD’s Ultrastar He10 datasheet.

He10 specifications
| Specification | WD datasheet figure | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Form factor and capacity | 3.5-inch; 10TB or 8TB | Capacity is stated in decimal units; formatted usable capacity is lower. |
| Interface | SATA 6Gb/s or SAS 12Gb/s | The exact model must match the host interface. |
| Sector format | SATA: 512e or 4Kn; SAS: 512e or multiple 4Kn formats | Check controller, operating-system, and backplane support for the specific format. |
| Rotation speed | 7,200 RPM | Manufacturer specification. |
| Data buffer | 256MB | Datasheet figure. |
| Average latency | 4.16ms | Manufacturer specification. |
| Typical sustained transfer rate | 237 MiB/s (249 MB/s) | A typical datasheet figure, not a guarantee for a particular workload or unit. |
| Maximum interface transfer rate | SATA: 600 MB/s; SAS: 1,200 MB/s | Interface-rate figures, not sustained throughput from the platters. |
| Non-recoverable read error rate | 1 in 1015 bits read | A manufacturer rating, not a guarantee against data loss. |
| MTBF and AFR | 2.5 million hours; 0.35% | Product-family reliability ratings, not a prediction of an individual used drive’s remaining life. |
| Load/unload cycles | 600,000 at 40°C | Manufacturer rating under the stated condition. |
| Warranty | Five-year limited warranty | A datasheet term; it does not establish coverage for a particular older or refurbished drive. |
These figures come from WD’s He10 datasheet; its publication date is not stated in the cited document. Warranty eligibility and support can depend on the specific serial number and region. WD provides a support and warranty entry point for checking a particular drive.

Will it work in your NAS or server?
Match SATA or SAS first
A SAS drive is not a drop-in SATA drive. Confirm that the controller and backplane support the drive’s interface, and verify the exact model against your system documentation. If you need SATA, do not assume that an He10 listing is SATA simply because it is advertised for a NAS.

Check sector-size support
Confirm whether the drive is 512e or 4Kn and whether your controller, operating system, and intended storage configuration support that format. For SAS models, verify the particular 4Kn format where applicable. A drive that fits physically can still be incompatible at the interface or sector-format level.
Check power-disable and security details
For a SATA model, ask whether its power-disable behavior is relevant to your host and whether the host supports it. Confirm the complete security-mode suffix and firmware state for the actual unit; a family-level datasheet cannot tell you how a particular seller’s drive is configured.

- 10TB Enterprise Capacity | 3.5-Inch Form Factor — Delivers massive storage density in a standard 3.5-inch footprint; drop-in ready for enterprise capacity applications including cloud, hyperscale, and object storage deployments
- Dual Port SAS 12Gb/s Interface | 7.2K RPM | 249 MB/s Sustained Transfer — Redundant dual-port SAS connectivity with backwards compatibility to 6Gb/s SAS; optimized for high-availability data-intensive server and storage array workloads. Not compatible with Desktop PCs — requires a SAS HBA or RAID controller.
- CMR Technology | Helium-Sealed Design | 512e Advanced Format — Conventional Magnetic Recording ensures broad enterprise compatibility; helium-sealed enclosure reduces internal drag for lower power consumption and improved heat dissipation versus air-filled drives
- 256MB Cache | Dual-Stage Micro Actuator | Rotational Vibration Safeguard — Micro-actuator enhances head-positioning accuracy in dense multi-drive environments; RVS maintains performance stability against operational vibration
- 2.5M Hour MTBF | 550TB/Year Workload | Dual HP/HGST Label — Industry-leading reliability rating for capacity enterprise HDDs; dual-labeled drive works in any compatible system, not limited to HP systems
What to verify before buying a used He10
The published reliability ratings describe the product family, not the current condition of an individual drive. Request evidence for the specific unit and make sure you can return it if it does not match the listing.

- Get a clear label photo. Compare the full model number with the drive variant your system supports.
- Request a current SMART or health report. Check power-on hours, reallocated sectors, pending sectors, and the seller’s test results. These are unit-specific checks, not values established by the family datasheet.
- Confirm the configuration. Ask about sector format, security suffix, and firmware state; for SATA, ask about power-disable behavior if your host may be affected.
- Check warranty and returns in writing. A five-year limited warranty listed in a datasheet is not proof that an older or refurbished drive remains eligible. Confirm serial- and region-specific coverage with WD and read the seller’s return terms.
- Plan for data protection. Keep separate backups. RAID redundancy is not a backup.
Is the He10 worth buying?
The specifications establish a 7,200-RPM enterprise HDD family with a typical sustained transfer rate of 237 MiB/s (249 MB/s), but they do not establish today’s price, stock, seller quality, condition, measured noise or power, or independent real-world performance. Whether a particular 10TB unit is a good buy therefore depends on its price and verified condition as well as compatibility.
Best Value
- Power disable feature, adapter cable included for legacy systems
- Performance -Enterprise-grade internal HDD with 10 TB of capacity, 7200 RPM spindle speed
- Quality Packaging -Packed and shipped in pressure rated box to ensure no damage when shipping
- Helium Technology -HelioSeal for lower vibration and longer lifespan compared to air-filled drives
Compare candidates by interface and sector-format support, usable capacity per dollar, and the drive’s condition, return window, and remaining warranty. For noise, vibration, heat, and power, look for measurements under a workload like yours; the cited He10 specifications do not provide those measurements. Without a tested unit and current listing, there is no evidence-based basis to call the He10 a better value than a specific alternative.
