If you want to remove exact duplicates on an iPhone or iPad, start with Apple Photos’ built-in Duplicates collection. For near-duplicate shots—such as burst photos or edited versions—HEVCut describes a review-and-delete workflow; Google Photos offers a similar-photo review in a specific storage-cleanup context. On Mac, PhotoSweeper is an option for comparing photos across several library types. The available product descriptions do not establish which tool is most accurate.
Compare the options by device and photo library
| Option | Where it works | What it says it matches | Review and cleanup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Photos | iPhone Photos library | Duplicates identified by Photos; Apple’s guide does not describe broad near-duplicate detection. | Review items in Duplicates and choose Merge. Apple’s guide says the collection is absent when no duplicates are identified. |
| HEVCut | iPhone, iPad, and Mac, according to its website and App Store listing. | Its duplicate-finder page describes exact copies and visually similar groups, including bursts, edited images, and screenshots of the same content. | HEVCut says it groups matches, highlights a suggested keeper, and lets users compare images and change the selection before confirming deletion. |
| Google Photos | iPhone and iPad, in the Google Photos storage-cleanup flow. | Similar-photo groups offered when the user is out of storage, as described in Google’s help page. | Google says it can preselect items for deletion while keeping a best shot; users can review and change selections before moving them to trash. |
| PhotoSweeper | Mac; its App Store listing names Photos, Lightroom Classic, Capture One, and folders as supported sources. | Exact duplicates and similar-looking photos. | The listing describes side-by-side comparison, adjustable matching, automatic marking rules, and review before cleanup. |
Choose the workflow that fits your goal
For exact duplicates in Apple Photos
Open Photos > Collections > Utilities > Duplicates. Review the items and use Merge where appropriate. This is the simplest first step if you want to work inside Apple Photos without adding another cleanup app. Apple documents duplicate merging, not a promise to surface every retake, crop, or slightly edited image.

For near-duplicates on iPhone or iPad
HEVCut is the more directly described fit if you want grouped visual-similarity results and control over which image to keep. Its publisher says exact matches are found with file hashing and near-duplicates with visual fingerprinting using LSH and Hamming distance. Those are vendor descriptions, not independently verified accuracy or safety results; compare the images yourself before deleting anything.

For Google Photos storage cleanup
Google’s documented similar-photo review is framed as a way to free device space when you are out of storage, rather than as a general duplicate-finding screen. Before removing photos, check which Google account and library are involved, whether the images are backed up, and what moving them to trash means for your synced copies.

For Mac libraries or multiple photo sources
PhotoSweeper’s listing makes it relevant if your photos are spread across Apple Photos, Lightroom Classic, Capture One, or folders. Its comparison controls and adjustable matching may suit a larger desktop review, but the listing alone does not show how well it performs on a particular library.

Similar does not mean interchangeable: one frame may be sharper, better composed, or contain a moment missing from the others. Open the full-resolution versions and inspect each group before committing to cleanup. Also check the current app’s deletion, sync, backup, and recovery behavior, especially before a large batch removal.

HEVCut, Google Photos, and PhotoSweeper all describe review or selection controls, but their workflows and supported libraries differ. The cited product pages and help instructions do not provide a shared benchmark or independent head-to-head test, so they cannot establish a universal accuracy winner. Features, availability, and pricing can change; check the current store listing and in-app purchase details before choosing an app.
