Herugavialis cairensis is a newly described Middle Eocene gavialoid crocodilian identified from a fossil skull found in Egypt’s Mokattam Formation. The skull was collected decades ago and once classified as Tomistoma; a modern reassessment recognized it as a distinct genus and species. Its link to the Great Sphinx is geological and symbolic: the fossil came from the formation associated with the monument’s limestone, not from inside the statue.
What is Herugavialis cairensis?
It is an extinct, long-snouted crocodilian in the gavialoid group, described from Middle Eocene fossil material in Egypt. The name refers to Heru, associated with Horus, and to Cairo. The species is not a crocodile newly found alive today; it is a distinct fossil species recognized through a new study of previously collected remains.

The skull material was collected in the 1920s and had previously been assigned to Tomistoma. Researchers reassessed the fossil with modern CT imaging and comparisons with living and fossil gavials, concluding that it belonged to a separate genus and species. The available reporting does not provide a dependable list of individual skull traits that distinguishes it from related crocodilians, so finer anatomical claims require consulting the study itself.

This is a taxonomic reclassification of historical material, not a recent discovery of a complete animal or a living population. The changed classification reflects what researchers could infer from the specimen using newer imaging and comparative analysis.
What is the connection to the Great Sphinx?
The specimen came from Egypt’s Mokattam Formation, whose limestone is associated with the Great Sphinx. Reporting gives the formation’s age as about 45 million years; that is geological context, not a new measurement reported as a result of the species study. The fossil was recovered from the formation, not from within the Sphinx monument.

The near-complete skull is missing the tip of its snout, creating a visual parallel with the Sphinx’s missing nose. Study co-lead Philip Mannion, a professor at University College London, explained the naming choice: “Given this coincidence with the famously missing nose of the Great Sphinx, we decided to name the new crocodile after the Egyptian god Heru, who was possibly the inspiration for this iconic monument.”

What does the fossil say about ancient crocodilians?
Gavialoids are long-snouted crocodilians, and their fossil record shows that the group once had a much broader distribution than living gavials do today. Fossil members occupied shallow marine environments. The study’s reporting says at least two other gavial species lived in the region alongside Herugavialis; living gavials are found in Asia, not Egypt.

Lead author Paul Burke of the Swedish Museum of Natural History described a changing Mediterranean crocodile fauna: “Throughout much of the last 50 million years, the Mediterranean region hosted a high diversity of crocodiles, including gavials. However, this diversity fluctuated over time, seemingly corresponding to changes in global temperature and sea level, before the loss of all crocodiles in this region as a result of the drying of the Mediterranean approximately six million years ago.” The proposed relationship between diversity, temperature and sea level is expressed as an apparent correspondence, not as proof that those factors alone caused the changes.
