You can run Hermes Agent on a Linux VPS and connect it to Open WebUI, but the project documentation does not specify a recommended server size or hosting provider. Choose a VPS based on your budget, operating needs, and whether you will use a hosted model or run inference locally. Then install Hermes, enable its API server, and configure Open WebUI to use that API.
What you need before choosing a VPS
Hermes Agent documents support for Linux and macOS, plus WSL2; its listed Linux/WSL2 targets include x86_64 and aarch64. The platform guide says the project tests on current Ubuntu and WSL2. A Linux VPS is therefore a documented deployment context, but the documentation does not provide a CPU, RAM, or storage sizing formula. See the Hermes Agent platform support guide.

Check the VPS provider’s current operating-system images, architecture, CPU and memory limits, storage, network transfer, region, backup options, firewall and private-network controls, recovery console, and support. Compare billing terms and total monthly cost rather than assuming an illustrative low-cost server will suit your workload. The project materials do not rank providers or verify current prices; its overview is not a hosting recommendation.
Hosted model or local inference?
Hermes’s quickstart specifies a minimum model context of 64,000 tokens. That is a model-context requirement, not a VPS memory or processor specification. If you plan to run inference locally rather than connect to a hosted model, compute requirements may differ substantially; the cited documentation does not establish a VPS configuration for local inference. Review the Hermes Agent quickstart and confirm the needs of the model and workload you intend to use.

Install Hermes Agent on the Linux VPS
Connect to the VPS with an account that can install software, then follow the Linux quickstart. The documented installer command is:
curl -fsSL https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/install.sh | bashAfter installation, reload the shell as prompted and complete the setup flow. The quickstart describes selecting a provider and model through hermes model or through setup. Choose a model that meets the 64,000-token context minimum.

Enable the Hermes API server
Open WebUI connects to Hermes through its OpenAI-compatible API. Hermes’s API server is disabled by default; enable it and configure a strong secret key. The integration documentation lists port 8642 and host 127.0.0.1 as the defaults. Keeping the listener on loopback is appropriate when both services can reach each other on the same host; do not assume a public listener is required. Follow the project’s Open WebUI integration guide for the supported configuration details.
Keep the API key private and use the same value in Open WebUI. Treat it like a password: anyone who can use the key may be able to access the API.

Connect Open WebUI to Hermes
In Open WebUI, add an OpenAI-compatible connection and set its base URL to the Hermes API endpoint with /v1 at the end. Use the API server’s reachable host and port, and enter the exact key configured as Hermes’s API_SERVER_KEY. The Open WebUI Hermes Agent connection guide documents this connection pattern.
Account for Docker networking
If Open WebUI runs in a Docker container while Hermes runs directly on the VPS host, localhost inside the container refers to the container itself, not the VPS host. Use a host address or network arrangement that the projects document and that fits your deployment, such as a host gateway mapping, host networking, or another reachable address. Check the Hermes integration and Open WebUI connection guides for their documented options; the correct address depends on where each service runs.

Open WebUI’s guide also includes a Docker Compose pattern with a persistent data volume and restart policy. A persistent volume helps retain UI data across container replacement, while a restart policy helps the UI return after a restart. Hermes must also remain available for the connection to work: an interactive shell session alone does not ensure an always-on service. Hermes describes gateway operation in its integration documentation; service management and reverse-proxy choices depend on your deployment.
Test the connection and troubleshoot missing models
- Check Hermes first. Use the documented health and model endpoints to confirm the API server is reachable and returns a model list. Consult the Hermes integration guide for the endpoint details.
- Check the Open WebUI connection. Confirm the base URL ends in
/v1and that the key matches Hermes’sAPI_SERVER_KEYexactly. - Check the address from the container. If Open WebUI is containerized, verify that its configured host address reaches Hermes rather than resolving to the container itself.
- Check the model picker. After the API responds, confirm that
hermes-agentappears in Open WebUI’s model picker.
If a connection test succeeds but the model list is empty, verify the /v1 suffix, key, Hermes server availability, and container networking. Open WebUI environment variables are applied on first launch; after initial setup, changing only container environment variables may not update a saved connection. Use the Admin UI or database route described by Open WebUI for existing saved settings.
Secure remote access separately
The API key secures the API connection, but dashboard access is a separate concern. Hermes’s web dashboard guide describes dashboard authentication and recommends OAuth for internet-reachable backends. It says the bundled username/password provider is intended for a trusted LAN or VPN, not direct exposure to the public internet. That dashboard guidance does not specify every firewall or TLS choice for a VPS, so configure network access and transport security for your own deployment rather than treating the API integration as a complete public-access security plan.
