Google Photos appears to be testing an album-level filter for recognized people and pets. Screenshots reported on October 14, 2026 show controls inside an album that let you choose more than one face, then narrow the album to photos containing those selected subjects. It is not a confirmed, universal release: Google has not published a launch date, supported app-version list, regional rollout list, or performance data.
What the new album filter is expected to do
The reported control would work from within an individual Google Photos album, rather than from the service’s global search screen. A user could select recognized people, pets, or both, and view only the album items that include the selected subjects.

Multiple selection is the important change. Choosing several faces could make a large family album, wedding collection, school event, or group trip easier to review without repeatedly scrolling past unrelated images. Selecting a person and a pet together could likewise narrow a shared album to the moments that include both.
The screenshots show a feature in development, not a documented product capability. The report does not establish how recognition accuracy is handled, whether filters can be saved, how many subjects can be selected, or whether the filter will be available on Android, iOS, and the web at the same time.

How it differs from Google Photos search
| Aspect | Reported album filter | Existing global search |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | One album at a time | The broader Google Photos library search surface |
| Subject selection | More than one recognized person or pet can be selected, according to the screenshots report | Search options depend on the controls currently available in your account and app |
| Workflow | Apply a filter while viewing the album | Leave the album view and search the library, then identify matching items |
| Availability certainty | Screenshot evidence of testing; no confirmed public rollout | Existing search functionality, with options varying by platform and account |
| Sharing context | Useful for privately managing or reviewing one album; sharing behavior is not yet documented | Search results are a library view, not a replacement for album collaboration |
What you can do in Google Photos now
Google’s current Android help documentation places album browsing at Collections > Albums. In Albums, you can switch among All, Shared with me, and My albums. The list can be sorted by Album title, Last modified, or Most recent photo.
- Open Google Photos on an Android phone or tablet.
- Tap Collections, then Albums.
- Choose All, Shared with me, or My albums.
- Use the sort control and select Album title, Last modified, or Most recent photo.
- Open the album and review its contents using the currently available search, sorting, and manual-scrolling tools.
Google’s help page also documents album sharing, link sharing, and QR-code sharing. You can share photos, videos, albums, and highlight videos with contacts even if they do not use the Google Photos app. If you leave a shared album, the photos, videos, comments, and likes that you added are removed from that shared album.

What is still unknown about the test
- Release timing: No launch date has been announced.
- Platforms and versions: No supported app-version list has been published.
- Geography: There is no confirmed country or regional rollout list.
- Recognition behavior: The report supplies no accuracy measurement, processing explanation, or correction workflow.
- Controls: It is not known whether filters can be saved, shared, combined with dates or locations, or applied to automatically generated albums.
- Performance: No benchmark for filtering speed or library size has been released.
Because the feature is based on screenshots and testing reports, an interface seen by some users could be an experiment that changes or disappears. A missing filter does not indicate that your account is malfunctioning, and changing app settings cannot guarantee access to an unreleased test.

Google has been adding ways to make albums easier to create and browse for years. In a March 22, 2016 announcement, Google Photos product manager Francois de Halleux described albums that could be suggested after an event or trip and curated with selected shots. The announcement also highlighted maps, location pins, captions, collaboration, and sharing.

De Halleux wrote: “We’re taking the best of stories and bringing them to albums, so your adventures are easier to browse, edit, collaborate on, and share.” The historical statement explains the broader album strategy, but it does not confirm that the 2026 people-and-pets filter has shipped.
How to tell whether you have access
- Update Google Photos only through your device’s official app store, then reopen the app.
- Go to Collections > Albums and open an album containing recognizable faces or pets.
- Look for a new people-or-pets control within the album view, rather than only in the global search interface.
- If the control appears, select one subject first, then test whether a second recognized face can be added.
- Check the results manually. A test interface is not a guarantee that every matching photo will be identified, and no published accuracy figure exists.
If no control appears, Google has not said that every user should have it. Continue using album sorting, global search, and manual review until an official release notice or updated help documentation confirms broader availability.

Who would benefit most
The practical value is highest for albums with many contributors or repeated subjects: family reunions, weddings, team events, vacations, and pet-heavy collections. Selecting several people could reduce the work of finding shared moments while preserving the album’s existing organization and sharing settings.
For a small album, manual scrolling may remain faster. For a shared album, the filter would help locate relevant images, but the screenshots report does not say whether applying a filter changes what collaborators see or only changes the current viewer’s screen. Treat it as a browsing aid until Google documents its sharing behavior.
