Moving photos from an iPhone to a Windows 11 PC should be straightforward—but the details matter: cable type, trust prompts, iCloud settings, and whether your images are stored as HEIC/HEIF (common on iPhone).
This guide walks you through the best options—USB import for one-time transfers, iCloud Photos for automatic sync, and reliable cloud alternatives—plus troubleshooting and compatibility fixes so your pictures arrive intact.

Why transferring iPhone photos to Windows 11 can be tricky
iPhones usually store images as HEIC/HEIF for better compression, and Windows may need an extra codec to view them. Meanwhile, iCloud Photos can be set up to sync in a way that looks like “missing” photos if you pick the wrong download option.
Then there’s the practical stuff: Windows 11 needs the iPhone trusted connection, and the import workflow depends on what Apple calls “Allow/Trust” on your iPhone screen.

What you need before you start
- An iPhone running a recent iOS version (iOS 16/17 is typical).
- A Windows 11 PC with Photos and iCloud for Windows installed (iCloud for Windows is required for iCloud Photos sync).
- A USB cable that supports data transfer (Apple’s official cable is safest).
- Your iPhone unlocked, with a passcode ready for trust prompts.
Recommended checks: confirm you have free storage on the Windows 11 drive for the full photo library, and make sure you’re not trying to import from “optimised” iCloud thumbnails only.
Method 1: Import photos from iPhone to Windows 11 via USB
This is the most direct way to move photos once, without setting up sync. Windows treats your iPhone like a camera device and imports from the DCIM folder.
Step-by-step using the Photos app
- Unlock your iPhone.
- Connect iPhone to Windows 11 using USB.
- On your iPhone, tap Trust when prompted.
- On Windows 11, open Photos. You can find it via the Start menu search.
- In Photos, select Import in the top-right area (or Import from USB device).
- Choose your iPhone from the device list.
- Select the photos you want (or choose Select all if shown).
- Click Continue.
- Pick a destination folder (default is usually Pictures) and confirm.
- Wait for the transfer to finish, then safely disconnect.
Step-by-step using File Explorer (more control)
- Unlock your iPhone and connect via USB.
- Tap Trust on your iPhone.
- On Windows 11, open File Explorer.
- In the left sidebar, find your iPhone under This PC (sometimes it appears as a device name).
- Open Internal Storage > DCIM.
- Open the folders (commonly 100APPLE, 101APPLE, etc.).
- Copy your images to a destination folder on your PC (for example, Pictures\iPhone Imports\2026-05).
- After copying completes, eject safely and disconnect.
Why File Explorer helps: the UI is less likely to skip files compared with “select photos” import workflows, and you can create a folder structure you control.

If you want “set it once and keep it current,” iCloud Photos is the cleanest route. It syncs what you take on your iPhone to Windows through iCloud for Windows.
Prerequisites in iOS
- On your iPhone, open Settings.
- Tap your name > iCloud.
- Tap Photos.
- Turn on iCloud Photos.
- Choose Download and Keep Originals if you want full-quality files available on devices.
Install and configure iCloud for Windows
- Download and install iCloud for Windows.
- Open iCloud for Windows from the Start menu.
- Sign in with the same Apple ID you use on your iPhone.
- Check Photos (label may appear as a checkbox).
- Click Options.
- Choose iCloud Photos.
- Set a sync location if prompted (Windows will create an iCloud Photos folder).
- Click Apply.
Once enabled, your Windows Photos library (or iCloud folder) should receive your images as iCloud sync completes.

What to expect (timing and “missing photos” behavior)
iCloud Photos uses staged downloads. You may see thumbnails quickly, while full-resolution images arrive as background sync runs. If you’re hunting for a specific photo, wait a few minutes and ensure your PC is online.
Method 3: Transfer using iCloud.com (when you can’t use iCloud Photos sync)
If you don’t want to install iCloud for Windows (or sync is misbehaving), you can still download originals via iCloud.com. It’s also useful when you only need a subset of photos.
Step-by-step download from iCloud.com
- On Windows 11, open a browser and go to iCloud.com.
- Sign in with your Apple ID.
- Click Photos.
- Select the photos you want (you can click multiple, and you can also use Shift for ranges).
- Click the Download icon (cloud/arrow download).
- Wait for the ZIP download.
- Extract the ZIP to a folder of your choice.
For larger libraries, download in smaller batches to reduce the risk of interrupted downloads.
Method 4: Use OneDrive for photo backups and downloads
OneDrive can act as a reliable middle layer when you want automatic backups and easy retrieval on Windows. The tradeoff is a cloud account and storage plan considerations depending on your library size.
How it typically works (high level)
- On your iPhone, install and open the OneDrive app.
- Sign in and enable Camera Upload (wording can vary by app version).
- Let it back up your Photos over Wi-Fi.
- On Windows 11, open File Explorer or the OneDrive app and sync/download the images.
If you mainly want “photos on the PC, fast,” this method is often less finicky than iCloud Photos configuration.

Method 5: Use Google Photos (web) to download to Windows 11
If you already use Google Photos, it’s another dependable way to move photos without fighting device import prompts. It also helps when your goal is consolidation in one account.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Download from Google Photos
- On Windows 11, sign in to Google Photos in your browser.
- Select the photos (or use album selection).
- Click Download.
- Extract the ZIP files to your photo folder on the PC.
Check whether you uploaded as original quality or storage-saving quality; that affects what you download back.
HEIF/HEIC compatibility: make sure Windows can open your images
Many iPhone photos use HEIC/HEIF. Windows 11 can view many formats, but if you run into “can’t open this file” issues, you’ll need the right support.
Common fixes
- Install HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store if prompted.
- Convert HEIC to JPG if you need broad compatibility for sharing.
- Confirm you’re importing the correct originals (USB import grabs the files on the device; iCloud settings determine which versions you download).
If you want to prevent headaches long-term, set your iPhone to save photos in a more compatible format (only if you understand the tradeoff in storage and quality).
Optional iPhone setting to reduce HEIC pain
- On your iPhone, open Settings.
- Go to Camera.
- Tap Formats.
- Choose settings that store photos in Most Compatible (this changes output format for new photos).
This affects future captures, not your existing library.

How to avoid duplicates and keep originals (without breaking Live Photos)
Duplicates usually happen when you both import via USB and sync via iCloud Photos. If you’re syncing, consider doing USB only for one-time catch-up, then stop USB imports to the same folder.
Live Photos and formats
Live Photos can appear as a still image plus a motion component depending on how the receiver processes the file. Windows apps may not treat Live Photos the same way iOS does, but the original content should still be present in the imported files.
If a Live Photo behaves strangely, keep the source files as imported and view them in a compatible app or convert them after transfer.

If it’s not working, don’t waste time guessing—run through the most common failure points: trust prompt, import permissions, format support, and sync state.
iPhone doesn’t show up in Windows import
- Unlock your iPhone and confirm you tapped Trust on the connection prompt.
- Try a different USB port on the PC (avoid hubs).
- Use another cable if possible—some cables charge only and don’t transfer data.
- Restart both devices, then reconnect.
- Try File Explorer import (DCIM > folders) instead of Photos app.
Photos import starts but some files are missing
- Check whether those files are iCloud-managed placeholders (common with iCloud Photos “optimise” behavior).
- Use USB import for a snapshot of what’s on the iPhone right now.
- If using iCloud.com downloads, select specific items and download in smaller batches.
- Retry with a different destination folder to rule out path/permission issues.
HEIC files don’t open on Windows
- Install the Microsoft Store extension for HEIF/HEIC images.
- Open the file with a known viewer that supports HEIC (for example, Photos after codec install).
- If you need immediate compatibility, convert to JPG after transfer.
iCloud Photos sync is slow or incomplete
- Confirm you’re signed into iCloud for Windows with the correct Apple ID.
- Verify your iPhone has Wi-Fi and enough battery/charging time.
- Keep Windows online; sync won’t finish fully offline.
- Open iCloud for Windows and ensure Photos is enabled.
- Give it time—initial sync can take hours depending on library size and connection.
Photos app import fails with errors
Errors can be misleading. If Photos app import fails, switch to File Explorer DCIM copying. It’s less fancy, but it’s often more reliable.

Common mistakes that cost time
- Skipping the Trust prompt on the iPhone—Windows won’t read storage correctly.
- Using a charge-only cable—the device may power but won’t transfer files.
- Turning on iCloud Photos and USB importing repeatedly—duplicates and mismatched sets become common.
- Downloading thumbnails instead of originals—your Windows library looks incomplete.
- Ignoring HEIC support—you end up with files you can’t open without extra codecs.
FAQs
Can I transfer photos from iPhone to Windows 11 without USB?
Yes. Use iCloud Photos (with iCloud for Windows), iCloud.com downloads, OneDrive, or Google Photos. The “best” option depends on whether you want ongoing sync or one-time exports.
Will USB import copy my original photos or only what Windows can display?
USB import copies the files currently stored on your iPhone in DCIM. If your device stores HEIC originals, you’ll get HEIC files. It won’t automatically convert them to JPG.

One-click scans. No signup required.
How do I know whether my photos are in HEIC format?
After transfer, right-click a photo file on Windows and check its extension (often .HEIC or .HEIF). If you see those extensions, you likely need HEIF support or conversion.
What’s the fastest method for a large photo library?
For speed and reliability, USB import is often fastest for a one-time bulk move. For ongoing updates, iCloud Photos or OneDrive can be smoother, but the initial sync still takes time.
Why do my imported photos look lower quality?
If you used iCloud.com or iCloud Photos without selecting original downloads, Windows may receive compressed or staged versions. Prefer Download and Keep Originals in iOS Photos settings for best results.
Bottom Line
If you want the simplest, most dependable one-time transfer, use USB with Windows 11’s Photos import or File Explorer copying from DCIM. If you want automatic, ongoing updates, configure iCloud Photos with iCloud for Windows.
Whichever method you pick, confirm HEIC/HEIF support and make sure your iPhone is set to deliver the originals you actually want on your Windows 11 PC.
