Neither is a universal winner. For indoor air quality, start by reducing pollution at its source, then bring in clean outdoor air when conditions allow. A room-size portable HEPA air cleaner can supplement those steps by removing airborne particles where it runs; it does not replace ventilation and is not a general-purpose filter for gases.
How ventilation and HEPA filtration differ
Ventilation brings outdoor air indoors and removes or dilutes some indoor pollutants. Its value depends on the outdoor air being suitable and on the building being able to ventilate effectively. It can help with a mix of indoor-generated pollutants, including particles and gases.

A portable HEPA air cleaner recirculates room air through a filter that captures particles. Its effect is local to the air it can move through the unit; it does not supply fresh air or remove every pollutant. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) describes source reduction and clean outdoor-air ventilation as the most effective ways to improve indoor air, with filtration as a useful supplement. EPA also says air cleaning is not a substitute for source control or ventilation in its guidance on air cleaners and HVAC filters.

Choose based on the pollutant and conditions
Indoor sources and everyday activities
Reduce or remove the source where possible. For cooking, use a range hood or fan that vents outdoors. When outdoor air is clean and ventilation is practical, exhaust and outdoor-air ventilation can dilute indoor pollution. A purifier may provide additional particle removal in an occupied room, but it cannot make an ongoing source disappear.

Particles in one room
A portable HEPA cleaner is a reasonable supplement when the goal is particle reduction in a particular room. Select a unit with a clean air delivery rate (CADR) appropriate to the room, keep its airflow unobstructed, and run it at a speed and for a duration that deliver useful filtration. Higher fan speed and longer operation generally filter more air, though noise may affect how long you are willing to run it.
EPA’s guide gives these estimated minimum CADR values for particle removal, calculated for an 8-foot ceiling. They are guide estimates, not product test results or guarantees; higher ceilings may require a higher-capacity cleaner.

Use the room size and CADR information as a sizing guide rather than assuming a product’s coverage claim guarantees the same result in every room.
Whole-home particle filtration
If central HVAC serves the area you want to filter, EPA advises using a MERV 13 filter or the highest rating the system can accommodate. Check the system’s compatibility and filter dimensions; a higher-rated filter is not automatically suitable for every system. A compatible filter only provides filtration while the HVAC system runs. Longer run time can increase filtration, but may affect energy use and humidity control.

Wildfire smoke or polluted outdoor air
When outdoor air is smoky or otherwise polluted, bringing more of it inside may be undesirable. Follow current local air-quality instructions and consider a portable cleaner or compatible HVAC filter to reduce airborne particles. Avoid adding indoor pollution from sources such as smoking, candles, and aerosol sprays. EPA discusses ventilation considerations in its ventilation guidance.
Odors and volatile organic compounds
HEPA filtration targets particles, not gases. A gas-targeted medium, such as activated carbon, may help with some gases or odors, but the amount of adsorbent material matters. EPA notes there is no widely used performance-rating system for portable consumer gas filters, so a generic “carbon” label alone does not establish how well a device will work.

Mold and moisture
An air cleaner may capture some airborne particles, but it will not stop mold growth or fix the water or moisture problem causing it. Address water intrusion and moisture at the source; EPA’s biological contaminants guidance covers indoor biological pollutants.

EPA reports that several studies of portable HEPA cleaners found small improvements in cardiovascular and respiratory health. The cited guidance does not give a single combined effect size; it cautions that benefits may be too small for an individual to notice, and findings about allergy or asthma do not apply to every symptom. A cleaner should not be treated as a guarantee of a particular health outcome.

EPA also warns: “Do not use ozone generators in occupied spaces.” Avoid devices or claims that rely on ozone to sanitize occupied rooms.
A practical order of operations
- Identify and reduce sources. Stop or limit the indoor activity or material producing the pollutant when possible.
- Ventilate when outdoor air is suitable. Use exhaust or outdoor-air ventilation to dilute indoor pollution when practical.
- Add particle filtration where it fits. For a single room, size a portable cleaner by CADR. For a central system, check whether MERV 13 or another higher-rated filter is compatible.
- Adjust for pollutant type and conditions. Do not expect HEPA alone to remove gases, and do not increase outdoor air during smoke or other poor outdoor-air conditions without considering local guidance.
EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home says people spend about 90% of their time indoors; the guide does not state a year for that estimate. It also notes that indoor exposure can come from outdoor pollution entering buildings as well as indoor activities and materials. This is U.S. consumer guidance, not a building inspection or a system-specific determination of which filter a particular HVAC unit can safely handle. For a large or complex building, consult qualified building or HVAC expertise.
