Then sample Batman: The Animated Series (1992–1994) to hear the Joker performance that established the second major phase of his career. The guide below explains what each title contributes, which order works best, and what to watch after the obvious franchise entries.

Why these two filmographies need different starting points
Cavill and Hamill are both strongly associated with comic-book mythology, but their careers branch in opposite directions. Cavill’s most useful introduction is a sequence of live-action performances: idealistic superhero, urbane spy, physically committed action player, historical courtier, and fantasy monster hunter. Hamill’s defining screen role is Luke Skywalker, while his later importance comes largely from voice acting, especially the Joker.

#1 Best Overall
- The Skywalker saga’s center trilogy introduces Luke Skywalker, who is drawn into the rebellion against the evil Galactic Empire when he is recruited by Obi-Wan Kenobi. Strong in the Force, Luke is confronted with a shocking truth — while Sith Lord Darth Vader faces a supreme decision.
Henry Cavill: the essential watch-first route
1. Start with Man of Steel (2013)
Man of Steel is the cleanest entry point because Cavill plays Clark Kent/Superman from the beginning. It establishes his version of the character’s origin, moral outlook, relationship to his adopted home, and physical style before the later ensemble films complicate that arc. Watching it first also prevents the introductions in later DC films from feeling abrupt.
2. Continue with the Superman arc
- Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016): Cavill’s next major Superman appearance, expanding the character into a conflict with Batman and a wider political debate about superhuman power.
- Justice League (2017): the theatrical ensemble continuation. It places Superman inside a team story rather than a solo origin narrative.
- Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021): the later director’s-cut version listed in Cavill’s filmography. It revisits the same broad ensemble premise in a substantially different cut, so it is best treated as an alternate presentation rather than a separate chronological sequel.
- Black Adam (2022): a brief Superman appearance. It is a coda for viewers who want to track every listed screen appearance, not a substitute for the three principal Superman films.
Watching both versions of Justice League back to back is optional. If you want only one pass through the arc, use the 2017 theatrical film for release-history context; if you want the expanded director’s-cut presentation, choose the 2021 film instead. The two cuts should not be counted as two unrelated Superman chapters.
3. See his lighter spy performance in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015)
After the first Superman film, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. shows Cavill in a stylish spy-comedy setting. His character has confidence, physical authority, and comic timing, but the film asks him to play charm and controlled irony rather than solemn heroism. It is the best early counterpoint to Man of Steel because it demonstrates that his screen presence is not limited to mythic material.
4. Watch Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)
In Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Cavill plays August Walker, a high-profile action role built around suspicion, force, and shifting alliances. The performance is more aggressive than his Superman work and places him in a tightly engineered espionage thriller. It is the strongest single choice for viewers who want to test whether his appeal carries into modern action outside the DC universe.
Rank #2
5. Add his recent spy and wartime films
- Argylle (2024): a contemporary spy-comedy lead, useful for seeing Cavill in a knowingly heightened version of the genre.
- The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024): a wartime action role listed in his filmography. It extends the soldier-and-operator side of his screen identity beyond the world of superheroes and secret agents.
These 2024 films are not required to understand the Superman arc, but they complete the picture of Cavill as a leading man who repeatedly moves between action, humor, and period settings.
Henry Cavill on television and in literary adaptations
The Tudors (2007–2010)
The Tudors is Cavill’s major early television showcase. He plays Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk, a courtier whose position places him close to the political and personal turbulence of Henry VIII’s court. The role predates his worldwide Superman recognition and is valuable precisely because it shows him working in an ensemble historical drama rather than carrying a modern franchise.
For a chronological career study, watch selected episodes of The Tudors before Man of Steel. For a concise introduction, watch Man of Steel first and return to the series afterward to see the earlier foundation of his performance style.

The Witcher (2019–2023)
In The Witcher, Cavill plays Geralt of Rivia across 24 listed episodes. Geralt requires a different kind of leading performance: much of the character’s personality is conveyed through posture, brief reactions, dry delivery, and combat movement rather than long explanations. The series is therefore a useful test of Cavill’s ability to sustain a role over television episodes instead of a single feature-length story.
Rank #3
The show belongs after the core Superman films if your goal is to follow public recognition, but it can be watched immediately after Mission: Impossible – Fallout if you prefer to move from action film to fantasy action. Its 2019–2023 run should be understood as a television period distinct from his 2024 film releases.
Enola Holmes (2020) and Enola Holmes 2 (2022)
Cavill plays Sherlock Holmes in both Enola Holmes films. These are supporting performances rather than solo Sherlock adaptations: the stories are centered on Enola, while Cavill’s Holmes supplies a more restrained, protective presence. They are good choices when you want to see him in a literary adaptation that emphasizes family dynamics and detective atmosphere over spectacle.
Mark Hamill: begin with Luke Skywalker
1. Watch the original trilogy in release order
- Star Wars (1977): the film that made Hamill a household name as Luke Skywalker. It introduces Luke’s ordinary life, his first step into the larger conflict, and the optimistic heroism that defines the character.
- The Empire Strikes Back (1980): the middle chapter, in which Luke’s training and setbacks deepen the character beyond the straightforward adventure structure of the first film.
- Return of the Jedi (1983): the trilogy’s concluding chapter and the payoff to Luke’s moral and personal journey.
Release order is preferable to a reordered chronology because Hamill’s performance develops with the films’ original dramatic rhythm. D23 described Luke as a hero without equal for an entire generation of filmgoers; that cultural role is impossible to understand fully by watching only clips or later appearances.

2. Sample the immediate non-Star Wars work
After the trilogy, watch Corvette Summer (1978) and The Big Red One (1980). Both are live-action films that place Hamill outside the space-fantasy identity audiences had just attached to him. They are especially useful as a paired follow-up: one shows him in a lighter, contemporary setting, while the other places him in a serious wartime drama.

Neither film is a continuation of Luke’s story. Their value is career context: they show the kind of character work Hamill pursued immediately after becoming internationally famous for one role.
Mark Hamill’s second essential career: voice and animation
Batman: The Animated Series (1992–1994)
Batman: The Animated Series is the essential next stop after the original trilogy. Hamill’s Joker became his best-known voice role in DC media, demonstrating how much personality he could create through vocal rhythm, laughter, menace, and comic timing without appearing on camera.
The series also changes how you hear his later performances. Instead of treating animation as a side project, watch it as the beginning of a second major phase in his career. His Joker work is not a footnote to Luke Skywalker; it is a separate performance legacy with its own audience and influence.
Related animated work
- The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest (1996–1997): a notable animation credit identified in Hamill’s biography.
- Superman (1997): another important animated appearance from the same broad period, useful for viewers tracing his connection to DC productions beyond the Joker.
Biography.com counted more than 250 roles for Hamill in 2019. That figure includes the breadth of his voice, television, film, and other performance work; it is why a short list of live-action movies cannot represent his full filmography.

What to watch after the original Star Wars trilogy
Use this order if your main question is, “What comes after Luke?”
- Watch Corvette Summer (1978) for a lighter live-action change of pace.
- Watch The Big Red One (1980) for a serious wartime role.
- Sample Batman: The Animated Series (1992–1994), prioritizing episodes featuring the Joker.
- Move to The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest (1996–1997) and Superman (1997) to broaden the animation sample.
This is not a sequel path. It is a transition from the role that defined Hamill’s public image to the voice work that made his career durable after the trilogy.

Two practical watch plans
If you have one weekend for Henry Cavill
- Begin with Man of Steel to establish Superman.
- Watch The Man from U.N.C.L.E. to see his comic and stylish side.
- Finish with Mission: Impossible – Fallout for his most concentrated modern action showcase.
Add the DC sequels later if you want the complete Superman arc, and choose The Witcher or The Tudors when you have time for a longer television commitment.
If you have one weekend for Mark Hamill
- Watch the three original Star Wars films in release order.
- Choose Corvette Summer for a lighter live-action follow-up or The Big Red One for a wartime drama.
- Watch several episodes of Batman: The Animated Series to hear the Joker performance.
This compact route captures both halves of Hamill’s essential career: the screen hero who became Luke Skywalker and the voice actor whose Joker became a signature in animation.
Bottom line for first-time viewers
Choose Man of Steel first if your priority is understanding Henry Cavill: it is the foundation for his Superman identity, while The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Mission: Impossible – Fallout reveal his range outside the cape. Use The Tudors, The Witcher, and the Enola Holmes films to explore his television, fantasy, historical, and literary work.
Choose the original Star Wars trilogy first for Mark Hamill, then move directly to Batman: The Animated Series. That sequence explains both the role that made him famous and the voice career that made his filmography much larger than Luke Skywalker alone.
