Helsinki energy company Helen and data-centre operator OnZero plan to send recovered heat from a planned OnZero Finland data centre into Helen’s district-heating network, with heat recovery scheduled to begin in 2027. The companies estimate annual output at more than 500,000 megawatt-hours—roughly the heating demand of 70,000 flats. That is a projection, not heat already delivered to 70,000 homes, and the announcement does not establish that AI energy use is its “biggest problem.”

What Helsinki and OnZero have announced

Helen and OnZero announced their agreement on 31 August 2026. OnZero calls the planned facility an “AI Heat Factory”; Helen says heat recovery is scheduled to start in 2027. The plan is to connect the data centre to Helen’s district-heating network, which distributes heat to buildings. Helen’s announcement describes the agreement and projected heat output; OnZero’s announcement gives its own estimate.

The “70,000 homes” comparison means an estimated amount of annual heat equivalent to the heating needs of around 70,000 flats or apartment homes. It does not mean 70,000 named households are already customers of this project, or that the facility is operating. Both companies’ figures are projections rather than independently measured deliveries.

How much heat is planned—and what the figures mean

Source Projected annual heat Equivalent stated Status of figure
Helen, 31 August 2026 More than 500,000 MWh Heating needs of around 70,000 flats Company estimate for the planned project
OnZero, 31 August 2026 Up to approximately 525,000 MWh Approximately 70,000 apartment homes Company estimate for the planned project

The estimates are broadly consistent, but they are not identical: Helen says “more than” 500,000 MWh, while OnZero gives an “up to approximately” figure of 525,000 MWh. Neither announcement supplies an independently verified operating total, a detailed definition of the apartment-equivalent calculation, or evidence that the projected annual amount has been achieved.

How can a data centre heat homes?

Electricity used by servers becomes heat

Data centres consume electricity to run computing equipment, and that operation produces heat. Instead of rejecting all usable heat, a facility near a district-heating network can recover it and supply it to the network for use in buildings. Helen says heat pumps form part of the transfer process, raising the recovered heat to a useful level for its energy platform and the network. Its data-centre heat-recovery service description explains the general arrangement.

Network location matters

Recovered heat is useful to district heating only when a suitable connection is available. Helen COO Tuukka Toivonen explained in the company’s 10 September 2025 announcement: “The electricity they use always turns into heat, which can then be used to heat homes – as long as they are located close enough to the district heating network.” Here, “they” refers to data centres. Helen’s explanation of data-centre integration discusses that proximity requirement.

  • Smart Temperature Control: Adjust temp from 50°F to 95°F via the thermostat and set a 12-hour timer. This indoor heater auto-maintains steady warmth, providing energy-efficient heating for day or night use
  • Multi-layer Safety Protection: Safety-focused with tip-over protection, overheat shut-off, and child lock. Made of flame-retardant materials and quality-certified, it ensures worry-free heating for home and patio
  • Ambient Light & Ultra-quiet Operation: Features 3 adjustable light modes for warm evening ambiance. This space heater runs ultra-quietly, delivering cozy warmth without disturbance during relaxation or gatherings
  • Safety Tips: For safe operation of this electric heater, always keep combustible materials—such as furniture, bedding, paper, and curtains—at least 3 feet (0.9 m) away from all sides of the unit. Never place towels or any objects on top of the heater to prevent overheating and ensure safe, reliable performance

Helen’s service page describes a configuration in which heat supplied to the network is approximately 85°C. The OnZero announcement does not state that temperature, so it should not be treated as a specification for the planned Helsinki facility.

Helsinki has other data-centre heat-reuse projects

Existing projects show that data-centre heat recovery is already part of Helen’s district-heating activity, but their figures do not prove what OnZero will deliver.

Project Published heat-equivalent figure What the figure applies to
Telia’s Pitäjänmäki data centre Up to 14,000 two-room-apartment equivalents after the expansion; a future plan to reach 28,000 Helen’s 26 May 2025 figures for the separate Telia project. Helen says heat from the site has entered its network since early 2023.
Elisa’s Pasila data centre Up to 1,000 one-bedroom-flat equivalents Helen’s 10 August 2022 announcement for the separate Elisa project.

Helen’s service description says up to 90% of waste heat is recovered at Telia Helsinki Data Center. That is Helen’s project-specific description, not an independently audited result and not a forecast for OnZero. The apartment equivalents also use different descriptions and refer to different facilities, so they should not be treated as a like-for-like performance ranking.

What remains unproven about the OnZero project

The two 2026 announcements establish an agreement and projected output, not completed construction or measured operation. They do not state realized annual heat delivery, uptime, or an independent lifecycle-emissions assessment. Helen COO, Strategy and M&A Tuukka Toivonen said in Helen’s 31 August 2026 announcement: “By harnessing waste heat from OnZero’s data centre for Helsinki’s district heating system, we can reduce the need for combustion-based heat production in a cost-effective way while ensuring that district heating remains a competitive and attractive heating solution for customers in the future.” This describes the intended benefit; it is not a published measurement of emissions savings.

  • NOT FOR HUMID ENVIRONMENTS: Please avoid using this heater in Bathrooms, Laundry Rooms, or other high-moisture areas.

To assess the project once it is operating, useful evidence would include annual heat actually delivered in MWh, the measurement period and system boundary, the apartment-equivalent assumptions, and how much heat recovery displaced other heat production. Until operating figures are published, the 70,000-flat comparison should be read as an estimate of equivalent heating demand—not a count of served households.
