Helping a person with a disability connect socially means supporting the relationships, belonging, and community participation they choose—not simply arranging attendance at an activity. Start with what the person wants, remove practical and social barriers, and provide enough support for relationships to develop over time.
What social connection means
Being present in a community is not the same as feeling part of it. A person may attend a class, club, or event without forming friendships or having meaningful contact. Social connection is better understood through the person’s own sense of relationship and belonging, and whether they can participate in ways that matter to them.
That distinction changes the goal. Rather than counting outings or program visits, ask whether the person has opportunities for reciprocal relationships—connections in which both people can contribute, make choices, and get to know one another.
Start with the person’s choices
Ask what friendship and community mean to the person, and what kinds of connection they want. Some may prefer a large group; others may want one-to-one time, an online community, or a familiar activity with a small number of people. Preferences can change, so revisit them rather than treating an initial plan as permanent.

Person-centred planning can help turn preferences into practical choices: where to go, when to participate, how to communicate, and whom the person hopes to meet. The point is not to steer someone toward the activity that is easiest for a service to arrange, but to find options that fit their interests and support their agency.
Combine opportunity, access, and ongoing support
A 2022 umbrella systematic review covering adults with intellectual disability, psychosocial disability, or autism grouped approaches associated with participation, inclusion, or belonging into three broad categories. It pooled 28,154 participants across the included reviews; that is a review sample count, not a forecast of how many people benefit from any one approach. The review also found that the underlying evidence was often low or moderate quality, so no single model should be treated as guaranteed or universally effective. Read the 2022 umbrella review.
| Approach | What it can involve | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Identify and connect to opportunities | Person-centred planning and help finding groups or activities the person wants to try. | Does this option reflect the person’s interests and chosen way of connecting? |
| Provide inclusive opportunities | Community groups, sport, outdoor activities, arts, and other ordinary settings where people can meet. | Can the person participate alongside community members, rather than only attend a separate activity? |
| Support participation capacity | Practical or communication support that helps the person take part and build confidence in their own way. | What support would make participation possible without taking over the person’s choices? |
These approaches can work together. A promising group is not accessible if transport is unavailable, and a first visit does not automatically create a friendship. A warm introduction, help with communication, or someone to accompany a person at first may be useful; the right support depends on the individual.

Follow-through matters. Side By Side Advocacy’s workshop description notes that relationships grow through showing up, trying things, and learning. That is a useful reminder that one-off attendance may be only the beginning; support may need to continue while a person gets comfortable and connections develop. Disability is shaped by the interaction of a person’s health condition with personal and environmental factors. The World Health Organization identifies barriers including negative attitudes, inaccessible transportation and public buildings, and limited social support. These barriers can restrict participation even when a person is motivated and has found an activity they like. WHO: Disability and health.
- Transport: Check whether the person can reach the activity reliably, affordably, and with the support they want.
- Physical access: Confirm that entrances, facilities, and the activity itself are accessible to the person.
- Communication: Ask what communication access or accommodations would help the person take part and be understood.
- Attitudes and group practices: Consider whether organizers welcome disabled participants as members and peers, rather than treating them as visitors or responsibilities.
- Continuity: Identify who can help address obstacles that arise after the first visit, with the person’s agreement.
WHO’s disability topic page gives a global estimate of 1.3 billion people—about 16% of the world’s population—experiencing significant disability. This is a population-level disability estimate, not a count of people who are lonely or socially isolated. WHO: Disability.

Support reciprocal relationships and inclusive communities
Support workers, families, advocates, and community organizations can help someone find and enter an opportunity, but the aim should be connection with other people—not a relationship that exists only because a paid worker is present. Where the person wants it, peer support and advocacy can help broaden choices and encourage community groups to become more accessible.
That requires attention to the community as well as the person’s support needs. A group might adjust how it communicates, make its routines clearer, offer accessible facilities, or reconsider assumptions about who can participate. These changes can make ordinary community life more welcoming without requiring the person to fit a single model of participation.

A practical way to plan support
- Ask and listen: Find out what connection the person wants, including interests, preferred settings, communication, and the people they hope to meet.
- Choose an opportunity together: Look for a community group or activity that matches those preferences, rather than assuming one type of program suits everyone.
- Check access beforehand: Work through transport, cost, physical access, communication needs, and the group’s welcome and participation practices.
- Agree on the support: Decide whether an introduction, accompaniment, or other help would make trying the activity easier, and how the person wants that support delivered.
- Review the experience with the person: Ask what felt good, what did not, and whether they want to return, try something different, or change the support.
- Make room for relationships to grow: If the person wants to continue, support repeated participation and help address new barriers while respecting their independence and choices.
The outcome is not a required number of friends or activities. It is greater opportunity for the person to build the kinds of relationships and belonging they value.
Side By Side Advocacy and a practical guide
Side By Side Advocacy is a not-for-profit organization based in Parramatta. It says its purpose is to promote the rights, needs, and interests of people with disability so they can participate meaningfully in the community, with advocacy for people with intellectual disability a particular focus. Side By Side Advocacy.
Side By Side Advocacy and Hunter Circles listed a one-day “Connecting with Community” workshop with Dr Angela Amado for 18 June 2026 at Parramatta Town Hall. Its description covered identifying a person’s interests, strengths, and gifts; connecting with community members and groups; community connector roles; and supporting relationships to grow. The event page links the activity to the Community for Everyone project. The listing is an example of this kind of work, not evidence that the workshop is currently available.

Use assistive technology when it addresses a real barrier
Assistive technology includes physical products such as wheelchairs, glasses, prostheses, white canes, and hearing aids, as well as digital solutions such as speech recognition, time-management software, and captioning. Suitable products can support functioning, inclusion, and participation, but no device is a universal answer to social connection. Consider one when it addresses a barrier the individual has identified, and make sure the person’s preferences guide the choice. WHO: Assistive technology.
WHO reported in a 2 January 2024 fact sheet that more than 2.5 billion people globally need one or more assistive products, with need estimated to exceed 3.5 billion by 2050. These figures concern assistive-product need overall, not demand for a particular product for social connection.
