Choose Dead Space (2023) if you prefer a proven sci-fi survival-horror campaign on the USG Ishimura, an engineer protagonist, practical tools and necromorph threats. They overlap in gore and isolation, but their fears are fundamentally different: Revival is about bargains, pain and the Labyrinth; Dead Space is about an industrial spaceship, alien infection and staying alive with limited engineering resources.
This comparison uses the information officially available as of 18 October 2026. Hellraiser: Revival launched on 8 October 2026, while Dead Space (2023) is the modern remake of the earlier game. Neither is objectively scarier for every player. Your choice depends on whether supernatural extremity or methodical science-fiction dread is more appealing, how much explicit content you can tolerate, and which platform and edition you need.

What Hellraiser: Revival is trying to be
Revival is a first-person supernatural horror game centered on the Genesis Configuration, the puzzle box that opens a path to the Labyrinth. You play Aidan Lynch, whose goal is to help his girlfriend Sunny escape after the Cenobites become involved. The story also places you against a cult devoted to the Cenobites, so the threat is not limited to creatures emerging from another dimension; human belief, ritual and betrayal are part of the danger.
#1 Best Overall
The premise gives Revival a different kind of agency from a conventional haunted-house game. The Genesis Configuration is both a puzzle object and a source of power, and using it means dealing with the consequences of attracting Pinhead and the Labyrinth. The game therefore frames progress as a bargain: solving the immediate problem can expose Aidan to a larger supernatural cost.
A new story, not a film retelling
Xbox Wire describes Revival as a new story inspired by the first two Hellraiser films rather than a direct continuation of their plots. Clive Barker was involved from the beginning, which places the game within the creative tradition of the films without requiring you to replay their story beat for beat. Newcomers can approach it as Aidan’s crisis, while longtime fans have the Cenobites, the Labyrinth and the series’ pain-and-pleasure mythology as familiar anchors.
What the first-person viewpoint changes
Saber Interactive says the experience comes from Aidan’s perspective. First-person presentation keeps the puzzle box, weapons and Cenobite encounters close to the camera, making the player occupy the character’s immediate physical space rather than watching a detached action scene. That perspective is especially important for players deciding whether Revival is for them: its horror is designed to feel personal and confrontational, not merely cinematic.

What Dead Space (2023) is trying to be
Dead Space follows Isaac Clarke, an engineer sent to repair the mining ship USG Ishimura. When he arrives, the crew has been slaughtered and necromorphs threaten the surviving people on board. The ship itself is the campaign’s central environment: a working industrial vessel turned into a maze of damaged systems, dark corridors and escalating emergencies.
EA describes the remake as rebuilt from the ground up with improvements to story, characters, gameplay, visual fidelity and atmospheric audio. The result preserves the original game’s survival-horror identity while presenting its world with modern technology. Isaac’s profession is not a cosmetic detail. The game consistently frames his survival around engineering tools and practical problem-solving rather than supernatural powers or military equipment.
Why the Ishimura feels different from the Labyrinth
The Ishimura is frightening because it is recognizable infrastructure that has failed. Doors, machinery, maintenance spaces and ship systems suggest an environment designed to keep people alive, yet every familiar function has become unreliable. Dead Space’s dread grows from isolation and uncertainty: Isaac must keep moving through a vessel whose purpose he understands but whose current condition he cannot trust.
Revival’s Labyrinth, by contrast, is supernatural by design. Its rules are tied to Cenobite mythology, ritual and the Genesis Configuration. If Dead Space asks whether an engineer can restore a ship long enough to escape, Revival asks what a person will sacrifice to reverse a supernatural violation.
Setting and tone: occult extremity versus sci-fi isolation
Hellraiser: Revival’s tone
Revival’s tone is theatrical, transgressive and intimate. Cenobites are not ordinary monsters; they represent a philosophy in which pain and pleasure overlap, and the game places that philosophy alongside cult devotion and Aidan’s attempt to save Sunny. The Labyrinth gives the story a mythic scale, while the first-person viewpoint keeps the consequences close to the player.

This combination makes Revival the stronger match for players who want horror that deliberately challenges boundaries. The official mature-content notice includes strong violence, gore, torture, consensual mutilation, non-explicit consensual sex, suicide, domestic abuse, BDSM practices and addiction. Those subjects are not a minor footnote to the premise; they define the emotional and visual territory the game is willing to enter.
Dead Space’s tone
Dead Space is oppressive rather than ritualistic. Its fear comes from a derelict ship, a crew that has been killed, an infection that creates necromorphs and the pressure of solving practical problems while under attack. The remake’s improved visual fidelity and atmospheric audio are intended to make that environment more immediate, but its central fantasy remains survival through competence.
EA’s cited pages do not provide a content list as detailed as Revival’s warning. Dead Space is nevertheless mature survival horror, with graphic violence and body-horror imagery inherent to its necromorph threat. Players who need a precise trigger list should check the rating information for their country before purchasing.
Combat and interaction: how playing them feels different
Revival: weapons plus the Genesis Configuration
Revival combines earthly weapons with powers connected to the Genesis Configuration. That pairing suggests a deliberately hybrid rhythm: Aidan can confront immediate physical threats while also manipulating a supernatural object whose use is tied to the story. The puzzle box is therefore more than a collectible or a key; it is part of how the player interacts with the world and the Cenobite bargain.
The combination also separates Revival from a straightforward shooter. The cult and Labyrinth provide situations in which understanding the mythology may matter as much as aiming. If you enjoy games where an artifact has narrative, puzzle and combat significance at once, Revival offers the more distinctive interaction model.
Dead Space: engineering tools and survival decisions
Dead Space emphasizes Isaac’s engineering role, his tools and the need to survive encounters with necromorphs. The design fantasy is practical: assess a failing ship, use the equipment available to you and make each hostile encounter manageable. The remake’s gameplay improvements are intended to deepen that loop without abandoning the original’s core vision.
This makes Dead Space a better fit if you prefer systems that feel grounded in the protagonist’s job. You are not bargaining with a supernatural entity for power. You are trying to keep an impossible repair mission moving while the ship’s conditions and enemies make every route dangerous.
Does Hellraiser: Revival play like Dead Space?
Only at a broad genre level. Both are single-player horror games built around exploration, threatening environments and graphic encounters. Their interaction identities are different: Revival revolves around the Genesis Configuration, Cenobite powers and a cult-driven supernatural story, while Dead Space revolves around Isaac’s engineering tools and survival on the Ishimura. Someone who likes Dead Space’s first-person tension may appreciate Revival’s perspective, but should not expect a reskinned spaceship campaign.

Which game is scarier?
There is no reliable universal scare ranking, because the games target different fears. Revival is likely to feel more extreme if your threshold is defined by torture, mutilation, sexualized or ritualized violence and supernatural body horror. Its official warning is unusually explicit, and the Cenobites’ appearance and behavior are central to the experience.
Dead Space is likely to feel scarier if you respond to isolation, industrial claustrophobia and the slow loss of control over a familiar environment. The Ishimura creates sustained tension by making navigation and repair inseparable from danger. Necromorphs are the immediate enemies, but the ship’s silence, damaged systems and missing crew establish the dread before an attack begins.
Choose based on the fear you actually enjoy
- Choose Revival for occult and transgressive horror: You want Cenobites, the Labyrinth, a puzzle box and explicit themes that test your limits.
- Choose Dead Space for sci-fi survival pressure: You want an engineer protagonist, a derelict mining ship and a campaign structured around tools, repairs and necromorph encounters.
- Choose neither blindly if content is a concern: Read your regional rating details, especially for Revival’s torture, consensual mutilation, BDSM-related material, suicide, domestic abuse and addiction warnings.
Franchise context and what newcomers should know
Revival for Hellraiser fans
Knowledge of the first two Hellraiser films should help you recognize the mythology, but Revival is not presented as a direct continuation of those film plots. Its new protagonist, Aidan Lynch, and his attempt to rescue Sunny provide the entry point. The game can therefore appeal to fans who want an original story in the universe rather than another adaptation of scenes they already know.
Dead Space for returning players
Dead Space (2023) is explicitly a remake. EA says it was rebuilt on the Frostbite engine for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with changes to story, characters, gameplay, visual fidelity and atmospheric audio. Returning players can expect the original game’s core survival-horror vision to remain recognizable, while newcomers get the current-generation presentation and an established campaign structure.
Platforms, editions and storage
| Game | PC | Console | Edition or storage details |

| Hellraiser: Revival | Steam; an 80 GB storage requirement is listed for PC | PlayStation 5 Standard and Deluxe editions are listed | Steam lists a demo plus Standard and Deluxe editions. PlayStation lists $39.99 Standard, $49.99 Deluxe and $14.99 Deluxe Content |
| Dead Space (2023) | EA app for Windows, Steam and Epic Games Store | PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S | Official EA pages list digital purchase routes; a price is not stated in the information used for this comparison |
For a PC purchase of Revival, check that you have at least 80 GB of available storage before downloading. The Steam demo gives prospective players a way to sample its presentation before committing, although a demo cannot establish whether the full story or mature themes suit you.
PS5 buying decision
On PS5, Revival has a concrete two-tier choice. The Standard Edition is listed at $39.99 and the Deluxe Edition at $49.99, with Deluxe Content separately listed at $14.99. These are PlayStation Store prices for the region and date checked, so confirm the final amount and included items on your local store page.
Dead Space is also available on PS5, but the official information here does not establish a comparable current price or edition breakdown. If price is the deciding factor, compare the live PlayStation Store listings rather than assuming the two games use the same structure.

Buy Hellraiser: Revival if…
- You specifically want the Cenobites, Pinhead, the Labyrinth and the Genesis Configuration.
- A first-person viewpoint and a new story inspired by the first two films appeal to you.
- You prefer supernatural mythology and cult themes to spaceship engineering.
- You are comfortable with the official warnings covering graphic violence, torture, consensual mutilation, non-explicit consensual sex, suicide, domestic abuse, BDSM practices and addiction.
- You want to try a Steam demo before deciding, or you are shopping for the PS5 Standard or Deluxe edition.
Buy Dead Space (2023) if…
- You want a focused sci-fi survival-horror campaign aboard the USG Ishimura.
- Playing an engineer who relies on tools and practical problem-solving is more appealing than supernatural powers.
- You prefer a remake that expands an established game’s story, characters, gameplay, visuals and audio.
- You want a current-generation console choice that includes Xbox Series X|S as well as PS5, or you prefer several PC storefronts.
- You want necromorph-driven body horror but do not specifically seek Hellraiser’s occult and BDSM-related themes.
Choose both if their differences are the attraction
The games complement rather than replace each other. Revival explores the spiritual and sensual logic of the Cenobites, while Dead Space explores technological failure and biological threat. Playing both gives you two distinct versions of first-person survival horror: one based on a supernatural bargain and one based on an engineer’s attempt to make a hostile machine survivable.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify your setting preference. Select Revival for the Labyrinth and cult mythology; select Dead Space for the USG Ishimura and sci-fi isolation.
- Check content tolerance. Read the full regional rating information, with particular attention to Revival’s detailed official warning.
- Match the interaction style. Choose Revival for Genesis Configuration powers and earthly weapons; choose Dead Space for engineering tools and survival against necromorphs.
- Confirm your hardware. Revival’s Steam listing specifies 80 GB of PC storage. Dead Space is built for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
- Compare the live store page. Revival’s PS5 prices were $39.99 Standard and $49.99 Deluxe on 18 October 2026, but regional taxes, promotions and currency can change the checkout total.
- Use the available trial where appropriate. Revival’s Steam demo can help you judge its first-person presentation and tone before buying.
Final recommendation
For a new, extreme supernatural experience centered on the Genesis Configuration, Cenobites and a personal rescue story, Hellraiser: Revival is the better choice. For a polished, established sci-fi survival-horror campaign built around Isaac Clarke, engineering tools and the USG Ishimura, Dead Space (2023) is the safer recommendation. The deciding question is not which game has more gore; it is whether you want horror rooted in a supernatural bargain or in the collapse of a mining ship.
