The Genesis Configuration serves two connected purposes. In the story, it gives Aidan a path toward the Labyrinth and Sunny. In play, official developer material places it at the center of puzzles and says it can be used to access powers. The box therefore links narrative and interaction: understanding what it represents helps explain why Aidan can progress, while using it is part of the progression itself.

Aidan

You learn about the Labyrinth and the Cenobites because Aidan needs to navigate them, not because the game expects you to know a chronology of earlier films.
Sunny

Doug Bradley returns to perform Pinhead in Revival. That return matters because Bradley played the iconic character in the earlier screen adaptations, and his involvement gives the game a recognizable performance continuity even though the plot is new.
What are Cenobites?
Cenobites are the supernatural beings Aidan encounters after the Genesis Configuration opens the way to the Labyrinth. They are not simply interchangeable demons. In Hellraiser’s vocabulary, they are entities associated with the realm beyond ordinary human experience, and they interpret pleasure, pain and transformation according to rules that are alien to normal life.

The game’s official descriptions also identify several categories of threats, including cultists, deviants, wretches and infernal priests. Those names indicate that Aidan faces more than Pinhead alone, but the available story material does not establish a complete enemy roster or explain every type’s abilities. It is safest to understand them as dangers connected to the Cenobite world and the forces devoted to it, rather than assume that every enemy is a Cenobite.
The Labyrinth explained
The Labyrinth is the otherworldly realm where Sunny is trapped. It is the destination of Aidan’s rescue attempt and the environment in which the Cenobites operate. Calling it a “place” can be misleading if you picture an ordinary building: the Labyrinth represents a hostile dimension with its own logic, imagery and spiritual authority.

The story does not require you to memorize a map of Hellraiser locations. Treat the Labyrinth as the destination created by opening the box and as the arena in which Aidan’s bargain becomes real.

The first-person view keeps Aidan’s perspective central: you investigate the environment, solve problems and confront threats without the distance of an external camera. What is new in Revival compared with familiar Hellraiser stories?
The game’s main original element is its Aidan-and-Sunny rescue story. Instead of adapting a specific film plot, Revival builds a new situation around the Genesis Configuration. The official announcements describe it as a new Hellraiser story while retaining the series’ signature concepts.
Two production connections strengthen that continuity. Clive Barker, who created Hellraiser, advised on the project. Doug Bradley returns as Pinhead. These credits do not mean the game retells the original film or that every previous event is required knowledge; they indicate direct involvement from the franchise’s creator and its most recognizable Pinhead performer.
A useful way to frame the relationship is: the mythology is familiar, but Aidan’s crisis is new. The box still opens a forbidden route, the Cenobites still represent the cost of crossing that boundary, and Pinhead still embodies the bargain, yet Sunny’s rescue gives the game its own narrative direction.

PlayStation’s official feature quotes the Hell Priest saying, “Explorers in the further regions of experience.” The feature identifies that sentence as a line from the original Hellraiser film, not a newly confirmed line written for Revival. It is a useful thematic bridge: curiosity is presented as both temptation and punishment.
