The retail release uses a game-key card: it authenticates the game, but the complete software downloads to the console or a microSD Express card, and the card must stay inserted when you play. Nintendo lists the digital edition for 8 October 2026 and Saber Interactive lists the physical retail edition for 30 October 2026. Plan for about 42GB of free space, and consider a 256GB-or-larger microSD Express card if your internal storage is already busy.
At a glance
- Digital release: 8 October 2026.
- Physical retail release: 30 October 2026.
- Physical format: game-key card, not a cartridge containing the full game.
- Download planning figure: approximately 42GB, based on regional Nintendo listings.
- Switch 2 storage: 256GB internal storage, with part reserved for system use.
- Expansion requirement: Switch 2 accepts microSD Express cards only, up to 2TB.
- Performance target: Saber Interactive lists a 30 FPS target.
The practical choice is therefore about access, collecting and storage management—not avoiding the download. Both editions require the large game download.

Physical retail edition — 30 October 2026
Saber Interactive’s FAQ gives 30 October 2026 for the physical retail release. That date applies to the boxed Switch 2 edition, which contains a game-key card rather than the complete game on the card itself.

What the physical “game-key card” actually means
A game-key card looks and functions differently from the traditional cartridge many Switch owners expect. Nintendo explains that the card does not contain the full game. Instead, it acts as the physical license that lets the console download the software and launch it.
- Insert the game-key card into the Switch 2.
- Connect the console to the internet and start the software download.
- Install the downloaded files to internal storage or a compatible microSD Express card.
- Keep the game-key card inserted whenever you want to start the game.
This format gives you a box and a physical card, but it does not let you install the game offline from the card alone. A card reader cannot substitute for the initial download, and lending or reselling the package means the recipient also needs enough storage and an internet connection to download the software.

The card’s continuing presence is also the main difference from a digital purchase. A digital copy is selected from the Home menu using the purchasing Nintendo Account; a key-card copy requires the card to be physically present for launch.
How much storage Hellraiser: Revival needs
Nintendo’s regional listings show slightly different estimates: 40.6GB in the United Kingdom, 41.9GB in Australia and approximately 42GB in Brazil. These are regional listing figures rather than a promise that every future build will have exactly the same size. Patches, downloadable content and listing updates can change the amount required.
Use 42GB of free space as the safe planning number before buying. Check the eShop page for the region attached to your Nintendo Account; Nintendo says the eShop and the physical package are the authoritative places for a game’s storage requirement.

Why the card does not reduce the download
The game-key card contains the license, not the complete game data. Consequently, the physical edition has the same fundamental download burden as the digital edition. Buying the box may change how you access the license, but it does not turn the installation into a small card-only process.

Not necessarily. Switch 2 includes 256GB of internal storage, although some of that capacity is reserved for system software. If you have at least the required free space after accounting for your other games, updates and captures, you can install Hellraiser: Revival internally.
A microSD Express card becomes the practical option when internal space is tight or you expect to keep several large games installed. Nintendo says Switch 2 is compatible only with microSD Express cards, not ordinary microSD cards. Capacities up to 2TB are supported, and the card can store downloaded software, updates and downloadable content.

For this game, a 256GB-or-larger microSD Express card gives useful headroom beyond the initial installation. Choose capacity according to your library rather than the game’s file size alone: future patches, additional downloads and other large titles all consume the same pool of space.
Internal storage versus expansion storage
- Internal storage: simplest setup and no accessory, but usable capacity is lower than the advertised 256GB because system space is reserved.
- microSD Express: keeps internal space available for other software and can be replaced or expanded later, but it must use the Express standard supported by Switch 2.
- Either location: can hold the downloaded game and its updates. The physical card does not replace storage; it only authenticates the license.

Choose digital if account-based convenience matters most
The digital edition suits players who want to buy without waiting for the retail date, avoid swapping cards and keep the game tied to a Nintendo Account. Once downloaded, you can select it from the Home menu without locating a physical package.

Digital is also the cleaner choice for a household that shares a console under the purchasing account’s normal software-access rules. It does not, however, remove the storage requirement or the need for an internet connection to download the game.

Choose the physical edition if the package matters
The boxed version is aimed at collectors and buyers who prefer having a tangible item. A game-key card can also be easier to identify on a shelf or hand to another person than an account-only purchase. The important qualification is that the physical package is not an offline copy: the recipient still downloads the game, and the card must be inserted for play.
If your main reason for buying physical is to avoid a lengthy download, this edition will not achieve that. Buy it for the package and card-based license, not for a smaller installation.
How to install the digital edition
- Confirm the regional listing. Open the Nintendo eShop with the account you will use to play and check the displayed storage requirement. Regional figures differ, and the listing can be updated.
- Prepare storage. Make at least 42GB free, allowing additional room if you plan to install updates or other software at the same time. Use internal storage or a microSD Express card.
- Complete the purchase. Buy the digital edition on or after 8 October 2026. The software will be associated with the purchasing Nintendo Account.
- Start the download. Keep the console connected to the internet and powered according to Nintendo’s normal download behavior. A large download can take substantially longer on a slow or congested connection.
- Wait for installation to finish. Do not judge readiness solely by the appearance of the Home-menu icon; allow the console to complete the download and any required update before troubleshooting launch problems.
- Launch from the Home menu. If the game is installed on a microSD Express card, leave that card in the console and avoid removing it while software is running.
How to install the physical game-key card edition
- Check the release date and package. The retail edition is listed for 30 October 2026. Confirm that the box is the Switch 2 edition and that it includes the game-key card.
- Free the required space. Before opening the game, check internal or microSD Express storage and make room for the complete download.
- Insert the game-key card. The console should recognize the physical license and present the software download option.
- Connect to the internet. Start and complete the download. The card cannot supply the full game data by itself.
- Install to the desired location. Choose available internal storage or a compatible microSD Express card if the console offers a location choice.
- Keep the card inserted to play. Removing it means the console cannot verify the physical license for launch, even after the software has been downloaded.
Will your save work when switching between physical and digital?
Nintendo says save data remains in system memory and generally works across physical and digital copies for the same user. That means changing editions should not by itself erase a local save, provided you use the same Switch 2 user profile and the game identifies as the same software.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Before switching, finish any pending system or game update and avoid deleting the game’s save data in Data Management. If the digital and physical releases are assigned different regional versions, or if a retailer supplies an edition with a different software identifier, compatibility can depend on that specific release; check the eShop and package details for your account region.
Storage troubleshooting before and after purchase
The console says there is not enough space
- Open the Switch 2 storage-management screen and review both internal and microSD Express capacity.
- Archive or delete software you no longer use, then retry the installation. Archiving removes software data while preserving the software’s save data; confirm the console’s current options before accepting a deletion prompt.
- Move suitable software between internal storage and a microSD Express card if the system provides that option.
- Do not buy an ordinary microSD card as a substitute. Switch 2 requires the Express standard.
The download stops or fails
- Verify that the console is still connected to the internet and that the Nintendo Account region matches the listing you checked.
- Check available space again; partial downloads and updates can consume capacity.
- Restart the download from the software’s Home-menu options after the connection is stable.
- If the physical edition is being used, leave the game-key card inserted while initiating the download.
The game will not launch from the physical edition
- Insert the correct game-key card fully.
- Confirm that the software download completed rather than stopping at a partial installation.
- Check for a required update and make sure the card is not being blocked by another cartridge or accessory issue.
What to verify at checkout
- Is the listing explicitly for Switch 2, not an edition for another Nintendo platform?
- Does the digital eShop page or physical package state the current storage requirement?
- If buying physical, does the description say game-key card?
- Do you have at least the listed free space, with additional room for updates?
- If you need expansion storage, is the card specifically labeled microSD Express?
- Are you comfortable downloading the full game and keeping the physical card inserted every time you play?
- If you are changing editions, will you use the same Switch 2 user profile that holds your existing save?
Performance expectation
Saber Interactive lists a 30 FPS target for the Switch 2 edition. A target is not a guarantee that every scene will remain at exactly that frame rate, but it is the published performance aim to use when setting expectations for this version.
Bottom line
Buy digital on 8 October 2026 if immediate account-based access and no card swapping are more important than a box. Buy the physical retail edition on 30 October 2026 if you value the package or a physical license, while accepting that it is a game-key card and still requires the complete download. Whichever format you choose, verify the eShop or package listing, reserve about 42GB, and use a 256GB-or-larger microSD Express card when internal space is not sufficient.
