Hellraiser: Revival is challenging in an adjustable, resource-management way rather than as a uniformly punishing action game. Its preset difficulty changes how carefully you must spend ammunition, melee durability and the Genesis Configuration’s Suffering resource. The combat becomes more dependable once you learn when to use firearms, environmental attacks and executions, while the puzzles usually test observation, item use and backtracking instead of abstract logic. Launch coverage most often criticizes the stiff, breakable melee system; the Configuration powers and oppressive Hellraiser atmosphere are the game’s defining strengths.
What kind of game is Hellraiser: Revival?
Hellraiser: Revival is a first-person action survival-horror game released on October 8, 2026. You play Aidan, who uses the Genesis Configuration to try to rescue his girlfriend, Sunny, from the otherworldly Labyrinth. The puzzle box is not merely a story prop: it governs progression, changes how you interact with spaces and supplies your supernatural combat options.

The official PlayStation listing covers PlayStation 5, and the game also has a PC listing on Steam. On PlayStation, the feature set includes adjustable preset difficulty, tutorial reminders, pausing during offline play and manual saving. Those options matter because the game asks you to learn several linked systems rather than rely on one dominant weapon or ability.

How hard is Hellraiser: Revival?
The most accurate answer is “variable and learnable.” There is no single fixed challenge level: you select among alternative preset difficulties, so the same encounter can demand very different resource discipline depending on your choice. Launch reviews do not provide a standardized numeric difficulty score, and their impressions are not laboratory measurements. They consistently suggest that the game becomes more manageable after you understand enemy behavior, weapon durability, executions and the Configuration powers.

| Factor | What makes it difficult | What lowers the pressure |
|---|---|---|
| Resources | Limited ammunition, fragile melee weapons and a finite Suffering economy force decisions. | Using environmental attacks and executions reduces dependence on bullets. |
| Melee | Blocking is limited, weapons break and the handling can feel rough or stiff. | Switching to firearms or environmental damage avoids prolonged close combat. |
| Configuration powers | Stronger abilities are gated by Suffering rather than being permanently available. | Staggering enemies and performing executions rebuild the resource. |
| Exploration | Locked routes, missing objects and backtracking can make objectives unclear. | The game’s interaction rules are consistent once you notice how the box and environmental mechanisms work. |
| Atmosphere | The Labyrinth’s presentation makes ordinary traversal and repeated encounters feel tense. | Players who enjoy deliberate survival-horror pacing may find that tension rewarding rather than obstructive. |
Higher presets primarily increase the cost of mistakes: wasted ammunition, a broken weapon or a poorly timed supernatural attack leaves less room for recovery. They do not turn every puzzle into a logic gauntlet. If you want to learn the systems without constant pressure, start on a lower preset; if you already understand survival-horror resource loops, a higher preset makes every encounter decision more consequential.
How long is the campaign?
PlayStation’s official feature quotes Assistant Game Director Vid Rajin’s estimate of 8–12 hours, with the final time depending on difficulty and player skill. That range is an expectation for the campaign, not a guaranteed completion time or a standardized review average. Careful exploration, failed encounters and time spent learning the Configuration can push an individual run toward the longer end.
How the combat system works
Firearms, melee and the environment
Aidan’s ordinary arsenal is a hybrid. Firearms provide consistent damage at range, while melee weapons offer a close-quarters option but are breakable. Reviews commonly describe the melee handling as rough or stiff, with limited blocking and durability concerns. That does not make melee useless; it means you should not treat a damaged weapon as a permanent solution to every enemy.

When a fight gives you suitable objects or hazards, using them can deal damage without consuming conventional ammunition. This is especially valuable when enemies approach in a line or gather around a narrow space. The environment is therefore part of the weapon set, not just scenery.

Genesis Configuration powers
The box gives combat its distinctive identity. Reported abilities include:
- Telekinesis: grab and throw environmental objects, including items such as saw blades or nails.
- Pyrokinesis and fire manipulation: draw fire from environmental sources and hurl it at enemies.
- Hell Chains: an advanced attack associated with the Suffering resource.
These powers are deliberately constrained. The Configuration does not make Aidan permanently overpowered because its more potent attacks depend on Suffering, a combat resource you must earn.
Building and spending Suffering
Suffering is built through active combat decisions, particularly staggering enemies and performing executions. You then spend it to activate stronger Configuration attacks. This creates a loop: weaken or disrupt an enemy, execute when the opportunity appears, and use the resulting resource on a dangerous target or a difficult group.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAn execution is therefore more than a finishing animation. It removes an immediate threat and helps refill the economy that powers supernatural abilities. Using executions only as emergency finishers can leave you short of Suffering later; using them whenever the situation is safe enough keeps the Configuration available for the next demanding encounter.

A practical combat routine
- Survey the arena. Identify environmental objects, fire sources, escape routes and any space where enemies can be separated.
- Choose the cheapest opening. Use a firearm for reliable damage, a thrown object for a lined-up group or fire manipulation when the environment provides it.
- Stagger rather than trade hits. A stagger creates the opportunity for an execution and avoids a long melee exchange.
- Execute deliberately. Treat the action as both crowd control and a way to rebuild Suffering.
- Spend Configuration power selectively. Reserve stronger abilities for enemies or combinations that would otherwise consume too much ammunition or durability.
- Reassess after every wave. A breakable weapon and a depleted Suffering meter change the next fight’s risk, even if Aidan’s health is full.
This routine explains why launch impressions vary. Players who conserve ammunition, exploit objects and maintain the execution loop report a more manageable experience. Players who rely on repeated melee swings encounter the system’s weakest feel and its durability friction.
Why melee can feel frustrating
The main criticism of the launch combat is not that close combat lacks purpose; it is that the feedback and reliability are less satisfying than the game’s supernatural ideas. Limited blocking reduces your ability to absorb a mistake, breakable weapons make extended engagements expensive and stiff handling can make an enemy’s attack feel more threatening than your own response.
The safest adjustment is to stop treating melee as the default damage source. Use it to create a stagger or finish a vulnerable target, then move to firearms, environmental attacks or a Configuration ability. If you enter every room expecting one weapon to carry the entire encounter, durability and positioning problems compound quickly.
How the puzzle and exploration systems work
The box as a progression tool
Assistant Game Director Vid Rajin describes the Genesis Configuration as being “at the centre of things.” In practice, that means the box connects narrative progression with physical exploration. You will encounter environmental mechanisms, locked routes, keys and missing objects, then use what you find to open or manipulate the next section.

The structure resembles classic survival-horror exploration: inspect a space, identify something inaccessible, search another route for the required item or interaction, and return when the route can be completed. Backtracking is part of the intended rhythm rather than an optional detour.
What the puzzles ask you to do
- Retrieve and place items: find a key, object or component and use it at the matching mechanism.
- Manipulate the environment: apply the box or another interaction to change a route or solve a physical obstacle.
- Read the space: recognize which locked door, missing object or mechanism is the current progression gate.
- Backtrack with purpose: return to an earlier location after gaining the item or capability that makes it usable.
Reviews generally characterize the puzzles as distinctive and atmospheric but not exceptionally difficult once their interaction rules are understood. The tension comes from exploring the Labyrinth and anticipating danger, so a straightforward item puzzle can still feel stressful even when its logic is simple.
A reliable puzzle-solving process
- Inspect every apparent dead end. Note locked doors, empty slots, unusual mechanisms and objects that cannot yet be used.
- Record the missing requirement mentally or in notes. Knowing that a route needs a key or a specific object prevents aimless searching.
- Search the connected area before widening the route. The intended item is often tied to the current cluster of rooms.
- Return when the requirement is met. Backtracking is usually the solution, not evidence that you missed a secret abstract answer.
- Use the Configuration where the environment signals it. The box is a progression instrument, so examine mechanisms again after obtaining a new interaction or power.
If you are stuck, first ask whether you have overlooked an item, a locked route or a previously examined mechanism. The game’s puzzle language favors observation and route management over multi-stage mathematical riddles.
Difficulty, combat and puzzles by player type
| Player preference | Likely experience | Recommended approach |
|---|---|---|
| Story-first survival-horror player | Lower preset difficulty keeps combat from dominating the exploration and atmosphere. | Use tutorial reminders, manual saves and environmental attacks while learning the box. |
| Action-focused player | Early melee friction may be more noticeable than the enemy challenge. | Build Suffering through staggers and executions instead of forcing close-range exchanges. |
| Resource-management enthusiast | Higher presets make ammunition, durability and Suffering decisions central. | Plan each encounter around the arena, not a single favorite weapon. |
| Puzzle-oriented player | Exploration is more demanding than the underlying logic. | Track locked routes and missing items, and expect purposeful backtracking. |
What launch coverage agrees about
There is a clear split between the game’s strongest idea and its most disputed implementation. The Genesis Configuration powers, environmental interactions and Hellraiser presentation are repeatedly identified as the mechanical and atmospheric highlights. They give the game an identity beyond a conventional first-person shooter.

The recurring reservations concern melee feel and repetition. Limited blocking, weapon breakage and awkward handling can make repeated encounters feel less responsive than the Configuration attacks. These are review impressions rather than a universal score, and the effect depends on how often you choose melee and which difficulty preset you select.
No standardized launch metric establishes an objective “difficulty rating.” The useful conclusion is conditional: the game rewards learning its economy and positioning, while players who expect smooth, weapon-forward action may find the close combat frustrating.
Features that affect your first playthrough
- Adjustable preset difficulty: choose the pressure level that matches your tolerance for resource scarcity and combat mistakes.
- Tutorial reminders: useful when you return to a system after several hours or forget how a Configuration interaction works.
- Pausing in offline play: lets you stop during a solo session without leaving the game running.
- Manual saving: gives you control over when to preserve progress, which is valuable before exploration risks or difficult encounters.
These features are listed on the PlayStation version’s official page. Platform-specific behavior can differ between the PlayStation 5 and PC versions, so confirm the controls and menu labels on your chosen platform.

Bottom line for prospective players
Hellraiser: Revival is best suited to players who enjoy atmospheric exploration and are willing to learn a layered combat economy. Selectable presets make the campaign approachable, and the official 8–12-hour estimate keeps the commitment contained. Expect the puzzles to emphasize items, environmental mechanisms and backtracking rather than extreme logic difficulty. Expect the combat to improve as you combine firearms, breakable melee weapons, environmental attacks, executions and Configuration powers instead of leaning on melee alone. The Genesis Configuration is the game’s central success: it links the story, exploration and supernatural combat into one system, even as the melee implementation can add avoidable friction.
