Helldivers 2 is now available on Xbox Series X|S. Arrowhead Game Studios’ four-player co-op shooter launched worldwide on August 26, 2025, at 1:00 a.m. PT/4:00 a.m. ET. The Xbox release added crossplay with PlayStation 5 and Windows PC players, making it possible for friends on all three platforms to join the same squad.

Does Helldivers 2 support Xbox crossplay?

Crossplay matters particularly here because missions are designed around coordinated roles rather than solo completion. Players need to communicate where they are moving, which objectives they are tackling and when they are deploying powerful support equipment. Before buying, check the game’s current account and privacy settings if you need to restrict invitations or matchmaking; those options can change with post-launch updates.
How the four-player mission loop works
Each squad can contain up to four Helldivers. Teams select a destination, choose an operation and complete a sequence of missions with specific objectives. Success depends on positioning and timing as much as shooting accuracy: one player may hold a defensive line while another activates an objective, calls in supplies or clears a route.

Stratagems define each loadout
Every Helldiver can call down stratagems during a mission. The launch coverage specifically identifies air support, artillery and automated turrets as examples. These tools can turn a difficult extraction into a manageable one, but they also require deliberate placement. Poorly timed explosives or turrets can endanger teammates, especially when the squad is fighting at close range.

Three enemy factions create different pressures
- Terminids: Bug enemies that drive close-quarters pressure and swarm management.
- Automatons: Bot forces that add a different tactical threat from the insect faction.
- Illuminate: A third enemy group included in the game’s wider conflict.
The faction mix means a weapon and stratagem combination that works well in one operation may be less suitable in another. Teams should discuss their equipment before dropping rather than assuming every player should use the same build.

The Galactic War gives missions a shared consequence
Completed operations contribute to a community-wide Galactic War. Thousands of players collectively capture or defend planets for Super Earth, so an individual mission is part of a larger campaign rather than an isolated match.
This metagame changes the reason to replay missions. You are not only earning personal progress; successful operations help influence which planets remain under control. The exact campaign state can change as the live-service war advances, so the strategic situation at launch is not a permanent description of the game.

What is in the Halo 3: ODST-themed Warbond?

Who should play the Xbox version?
- Choose it if your regular group uses mixed hardware. Crossplay lets Xbox owners join PS5 and PC friends without moving everyone to one platform.
- Choose it if you want structured co-op rather than a short arcade match. Operations, objectives, extraction and the Galactic War create a longer-term loop.
- Plan for teamwork. Four-player missions, friendly-fire risks and stratagem timing reward voice communication and clear roles.
- Expect a satirical tone. The game draws clear inspiration from Starship Troopers, with additional influences associated with Terminator and War of the Worlds.
The Xbox launch expanded where Helldivers 2 can be played without changing its central proposition: small squads coordinate weapons and support calls, complete objectives under pressure and contribute to a larger interplanetary war.
