Hell Is Us and Elden Ring both combine third-person exploration with melee action, but they are built around opposite kinds of discovery. Hell Is Us is a semi-open, clue-led adventure that removes the map, compass and quest markers. Elden Ring is a vast open-world action RPG where you roam on foot or horseback, uncover secrets and enter large Legacy Dungeons woven into the landscape. Hell Is Us suits players who want to interpret the world for themselves; Elden Ring suits players who want broad traversal, build variety and optional online play.

The short answer

Choose Hell Is Us if your priority is a focused journey in which observation replaces routine navigation prompts. Its world is semi-open, and Nacon explicitly describes it as having no map, compass or quest markers. You still receive context from characters and location summaries, but the game expects you to notice landmarks, interpret clues and decide what a lead means.

Choose Elden Ring if you want a much larger world, free movement on a spectral steed, secrets scattered across the landscape, multi-level Legacy Dungeons and a combat system that supports many weapons, magical disciplines and skills. Bandai Namco and PlayStation present it as an open-world action RPG with both solo and online options.

Neither design is automatically better. Hell Is Us makes navigation itself part of the challenge, while Elden Ring makes scale, route choice and mechanical experimentation part of the challenge. The right choice depends on whether you prefer interpreting a smaller world or ranging across a huge one with more ways to fight.

How exploration works in Hell Is Us

A semi-open world without the usual route markers

The defining choice in Hell Is Us is the removal of conventional navigation aids. Nacon’s official product page says the game has no map, compass or quest markers. That does not mean the protagonist is left without information; it means information is delivered through the world and its people instead of a HUD that turns every objective into an icon.

You may receive a location or character summary that nudges you toward a region, but you must connect that hint to what you see. A building silhouette, an unusual path, a distinctive object or a conversation can become the practical equivalent of a waypoint. The game’s challenge is therefore partly interpretive: you are deciding what matters before you decide where to walk.

“Player-Plattering” and deliberate observation

Rogue Factor executive creative director and art director Jonathan Jacques-Belletête described the philosophy in a September 24, 2024 PlayStation.Blog article: “As you may have gathered, our design choice of ‘Player-Plattering,’ aims to encourage exploration and reflection, which is at the heart of what we want to achieve with Hell is Us.” Read the full explanation in PlayStation.Blog’s Hell Is Us gameplay preview.

In practical terms, that philosophy rewards players who pause to inspect a scene rather than sprinting from one marker to the next. It can make a short detour feel meaningful because the detour was your idea, not a highlighted objective. It can also make a missed clue feel like a genuine navigation error instead of a temporarily disabled icon.

What the no-marker approach changes

  • Attention: landmarks, architecture and environmental details become useful information.
  • Memory: you may need to remember a name, direction or visual feature instead of following a minimap line.
  • Pacing: movement slows when you are interpreting a clue and speeds up when you recognize the route.
  • Risk of uncertainty: players who prefer explicit objectives may find the lack of a compass frustrating.

GameSpot reviewer Alessandro Barbosa called the exploration rewarding and compared its structure to classic point-and-click adventures. He also described the marker-free journey as a refreshing break from following quest icons, while criticizing shallow enemy variety and imprecise controls. Those are review judgments from the August 29, 2025 review, not universal measurements; the full assessment is at GameSpot.

How exploration works in Elden Ring

A large world designed for roaming

Elden Ring takes the opposite approach to scale. Bandai Namco’s gameplay preview describes a vast world filled with secrets and large, multi-level Legacy Dungeons integrated into the overworld. Instead of a compact chain of clue-driven locations, you move through the Lands Between and decide which distant feature, side path or dungeon entrance deserves investigation.

  • German packaging. German instructions. German playable.
  • 3rd person action adventure that combines intense close combat with the thrill of exploration. Player plating, full control over adventure, through research, discovery and decision. A wide range of weapons including swords, spears and axes.
  • A huge semi-open world and a unique mature setting paired with an innovative design philosophy.
  • Intense action and a unique risk reward system that combines endurance with the health of the player.

The open-world structure lets discoveries lead to more discoveries. A visible ruin can contain a route, an encounter or an item that changes where you go next. A Legacy Dungeon then shifts the rhythm from broad outdoor travel to a dense, layered space with its own vertical routes and enclosed challenges. Because those dungeons are connected to the overworld rather than isolated from it, exploration can alternate between long-distance travel and intricate interior navigation.

Foot travel, a spectral steed and mounted combat

The spectral steed is one of Elden Ring’s clearest traversal advantages. Official materials describe it as a way to cross the world quickly and fight while mounted. PlayStation’s current Elden Ring page likewise says players travel on foot or horseback through the Lands Between.

Mounted movement changes how you evaluate distance. A ridge, valley or distant structure is not merely scenery; it may be a destination that can be reached quickly, bypassed temporarily or approached from another direction. The steed also gives combat a positional dimension that Hell Is Us’s documented melee-and-drone premise does not advertise.

Exploration as route choice rather than clue decoding

Elden Ring still asks you to observe, but its main question is often “Where do I want to go?” rather than “What does this clue mean?” You can roam away from the apparent critical path, return later with a different build and choose whether to enter a dungeon, investigate a secret or continue across the overworld. That freedom is a major attraction for players who enjoy self-directed wandering, but the sheer number of possible directions can feel less focused than Hell Is Us.

Hell Is Us combat: focused melee with a drone

A narrow premise with deliberate weight

Nacon presents Hell Is Us as a third-person action-adventure that combines exploration and melee combat. Its central combat premise is an ancient sword and a drone used against supernatural creatures. That gives the game a clear identity: the question is how you read an encounter and use this focused toolkit, not how you assemble one of dozens of character builds.

TechRadar’s review describes the combat as weighty and challenging. The same reviewer notes limited weapon diversity and no customizable character stats, meaning players should not expect the build-crafting range associated with a large action RPG. The review also reports a thorough playthrough lasting just under 30 hours; that is one reviewer’s experience, not a standardized completion time and not a direct length comparison with Elden Ring. The review is available at TechRadar.

  • Each character designed with individual personality, unique story and background

What the limited range can offer

  • Clarity: a smaller arsenal can make each weapon and encounter easier to understand.
  • Consistency: progression is less dependent on finding a particular build or spell combination.
  • Pressure: weighty attacks and challenging timing make positioning and commitment important.

The trade-off is equally clear. If you want to respec a character, specialize in several weapon families or solve a difficult fight with a radically different loadout, the documented lack of customizable stats and the reviews’ comments about weapon variety may feel restrictive. Barbosa’s GameSpot review also criticizes imprecise controls, a point to weigh carefully if responsiveness is your highest combat priority.

Elden Ring combat: breadth, builds and multiple approaches

Weapons, magic and skills

Bandai Namco’s official gameplay preview highlights multiple weapon types, magical disciplines and weapon skills. PlayStation’s game page similarly says players can shape their playstyle with weapons, magical abilities and skills. This is a broader combat toolbox than the focused sword-and-drone premise documented for Hell Is Us.

That breadth affects how you solve problems. You can pursue a melee-oriented approach, lean on magical abilities, combine weapons with skills or change your approach as you learn an enemy. The official descriptions establish the range of options, but they do not provide a complete, fixed list of every weapon, spell or build, so specific loadout claims depend on the edition and current game version.

Mounted fighting and encounter flexibility

Because the spectral steed can be used in combat, some outdoor encounters can be approached at speed, from a different angle or without committing to a stationary duel. This does not replace Elden Ring’s close-quarters combat; it adds another context in which weapon choice, timing and positioning matter.

Online play

Bandai Namco’s official materials describe co-op multiplayer. The current official page lists support for up to three online players and up to six in Arenas. Online availability and rules can change with updates, so check the live Bandai Namco Elden Ring page for the edition and services available in your region.

Which game makes exploration more demanding?

Hell Is Us is demanding when you dislike being told what matters

Hell Is Us places the burden of filtering information on you. There is no map or compass to reassure you that you are moving in the right direction, and no quest marker to identify the next interaction. The difficulty is cognitive and observational before it is mechanical: you must retain context, inspect surroundings and tolerate uncertainty.

This approach is strongest for players who enjoy deduction, environmental storytelling and the satisfaction of finding a route without a highlighted path. It is weaker for players who use games to relax by following clear objectives or who become frustrated when a clue is easy to overlook.

Elden Ring is demanding when you want to see everything

Elden Ring’s challenge comes from abundance. The world is large, destinations are layered and Legacy Dungeons can contain multiple levels and routes. You have more freedom to leave a difficult area and explore elsewhere, but that freedom also means more decisions, detours and potential missed content.

Its exploration is therefore less about decoding a single intended path and more about managing curiosity across a huge space. Players who enjoy making their own itinerary will find room to roam; players who want a compact chain of clues may prefer Hell Is Us.

Which game offers deeper combat variety?

On the evidence available, Elden Ring offers the broader combat system. Its official descriptions explicitly cover multiple weapons, magical disciplines, skills, mounted combat and online play. Hell Is Us offers a more concentrated melee experience centered on an ancient sword and drone, with reviews describing weighty challenge but also limited weapon diversity and no customizable character stats.

“Broader” does not mean “better for every player.” A focused system can be easier to read and can keep the adventure’s identity coherent. If you want to experiment with radically different approaches, Elden Ring is the more suitable choice. If you want combat that supports a particular narrative and exploration concept without a large build menu, Hell Is Us may be more appealing.

PlayStation’s page covers the PS4 and PS5 editions and identifies a Shadow of the Erdtree bundle. Bandai Namco’s current official page lists PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch 2, and states that Shadow of the Erdtree requires the base game. It also reports Patch 1.17 on August 27, 2026. Platform, bundle and update information can change, so verify the live listing before buying: Bandai Namco’s official Elden Ring site.

Decision guide: pick the game that matches your habits

Pick Hell Is Us when you want:

  • A semi-open world rather than a sprawling open-world map.
  • Exploration based on environmental clues, memory and intuition.
  • A game that does not place a compass, map or quest-marker route in front of you.
  • A focused melee premise built around an ancient sword and drone.
  • A self-contained adventure in which finding the route is part of the story’s intended experience.

Pick Elden Ring when you want:

  • A vast world with secrets and multiple directions to investigate.
  • Large, multi-level Legacy Dungeons connected directly to the overworld.
  • Fast traversal on a spectral steed and the option to fight while mounted.
  • More combat approaches through weapon types, magical disciplines and skills.
  • Officially supported online co-op and Arenas, subject to current platform and service availability.

Consider your tolerance for uncertainty

The most useful deciding question is not which game is “harder.” Ask whether you enjoy uncertainty in navigation or prefer uncertainty in combat and route choice. Hell Is Us makes you work out where to go. Elden Ring gives you a huge number of places to go and asks you to decide how to approach each one. Both reward curiosity, but they reward different kinds of curiosity.

Bottom line

Hell Is Us and Elden Ring overlap at the level of genre—third-person exploration, melee action and dangerous encounters—but diverge in their priorities. Hell Is Us turns the absence of navigation aids into its central exploration feature and supports that with a concentrated sword-and-drone combat concept. Elden Ring makes the world itself the main playground, adding horseback travel, integrated Legacy Dungeons, a wider range of weapons and magic, mounted combat and online options.

For a clue-led adventure that asks you to observe and reflect, start with Hell Is Us. For a massive world in which you can roam, experiment with builds and play online, start with Elden Ring.
