Short answer: Buy the Steam version if you want to play first, test the free demo, or need adjustable PC settings. Choose Switch if portable play matters more than getting the game a month earlier. The January console window is an announcement, not a guarantee that every regional storefront will publish the game on the same day. Store pages can add prices, language support and technical information later. Until then, claims about parity, 4K output, 60 frames per second, loading performance or cross-progression would be speculation.

You return to an alpine village and help it recover through routine work and relationships rather than combat or timed objectives. The core activities described by the developer and publisher include:

The 2025 publisher announcement presents a hand-drawn Swiss Alps setting with “no timers, strict goals, or negative consequences.” That makes the choice of platform less about competitive frame rates and more about where you want to spend unhurried sessions. The Steam listing adds single-player play, complete controller support, the ability to save at any time, camera-comfort options and independent volume controls.
Which version should you buy?
Choose Steam for earliest access and the lowest-risk purchase
Steam is the only edition with a live, detailed storefront listing and a downloadable demo. Its December 2026 launch is scheduled before the January 2027 console versions, so it is the practical choice if you want to start as soon as possible. The demo also lets you check the hand-drawn presentation, reading comfort, camera movement and controller behavior on your own computer before paying.
PC is the only platform for which published hardware requirements exist. That makes compatibility easier to assess than on either console. You can select between keyboard-and-mouse or controller input, adjust volume categories, use camera-comfort settings and save whenever you choose. Those features are listed for the Steam version; their presence on Switch and PS5 has not been confirmed.
Steam is not automatically the best-looking or fastest edition. No final resolution, frame-rate target, loading-time measurement or review benchmark is available, and Steam Deck compatibility is listed as unknown. If you intend to play primarily on a Deck, wait for an explicit compatibility rating or early owner reports rather than assuming that the modest Windows requirements guarantee a good handheld experience.

Choose Switch for portable alpine play
Switch is the only announced version designed for play away from a television or desk. That suits a game built around fishing, foraging, crafting and conversations that can be enjoyed in short, self-directed sessions. If portability is your deciding factor, the January 2027 edition is the one to wait for.
The Japanese Rainy Frog listing gives a one-time regional price of ¥1,800 and an IARC 3 age rating. That price should not be converted into a universal launch price: currency, tax and regional-store policies can produce different totals elsewhere. Nintendo has not published Switch resolution, frame-rate, battery-life, download-size or cartridge information in the available listings. You therefore cannot yet determine whether the portable edition will match a PC display mode or how much storage it will use.
There is also no confirmed Switch demo, cross-save arrangement or feature-by-feature comparison with Steam. Check the final Nintendo store page before pre-ordering if those details matter to you.

PS5 is the natural fit if you want to play from a sofa with a DualSense controller and a television or monitor. It launches in the same announced January 2027 window as Switch and uses current-generation PlayStation hardware, but that does not establish a particular resolution or frame rate. The available regional listing confirms the platform and the same broad game description, not its technical targets.

Price, trophy support, save-transfer behavior, installation size and any visual enhancements remain unannounced. A PS5 owner who values a known performance mode should wait for the official product page or reviews. Buying solely on the assumption that the console will run at 4K or 60 frames per second would go beyond the published evidence.

What the demo can and cannot tell you
The Steam demo is useful for questions that specifications cannot answer. On your own system, check whether text is readable at your normal viewing distance, whether camera movement feels comfortable, whether controller prompts behave as expected and whether the quiet pace suits you. You can also confirm that the game starts and runs on your operating system before the full December release.

A demo should not be treated as proof of final content, final optimization or console performance. It cannot establish how the Switch and PS5 editions will run, whether saves transfer between platforms or whether the launch build will use the same settings. Features and performance can change between a festival demo and release.

If you want to play first
Select Steam. It has the earliest announced window and the only publicly available demo. This is the clearest route for players who would rather start in December than wait for a console launch in January.
If you play mostly in handheld mode
Wait for Switch. Portability is the one major capability the other announced versions do not provide directly. Before purchasing, verify the final regional price, download size and whether the comfort and save features you care about appear on the Nintendo product page.

If your library and play space are centered on PlayStation
Wait for PS5’s store page and technical details. The version is confirmed, but its price, trophies, installation size, visual modes and save behavior are not. A short delay gives you information that is currently unavailable rather than forcing a guess.

If your computer is older
Compare it with the Steam minimums, then use the demo. The minimum Windows configuration is unusually modest—an Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB of memory and integrated graphics comparable to Intel HD 3000—but those figures only indicate the developer’s stated floor. The demo is the appropriate way to check your particular drivers, display and input setup.
If accessibility and camera comfort are priorities
Steam is the only edition whose listing explicitly names camera-comfort options, custom volume controls and save-anytime functionality. Do not assume that consoles omit them; simply wait for their store descriptions or accessibility notes to confirm whether they are included.
Open questions to check before launch
Several purchase-critical facts are still open. Look for answers on the final platform pages or in independent reviews:

- Exact voice-language support in addition to the five listed interface/subtitle languages.
- PS5 trophy support and save-transfer rules.
- Whether Switch and PS5 include the same camera, audio and save-anytime options listed for Steam.
None of these unknowns changes the current access order, but they can change which edition is the best value for a particular player.
The Heidi connection
Humble Reeds’ founders, Mélanie Christin and Aurélien Condomines, have said that “The Heidi novels left a profound impact on us growing up.” Their press material describes the literary property as having sold more than 50 million copies and receiving 25 film and television adaptations, including the Japanese anime. Those figures refer to the Heidi books and adaptations, not to game sales or reviews.
Mountains Calling uses the familiar alpine setting as inspiration for a new interactive village story. It should therefore be approached as an original simulation/adventure with Heidi-related themes, not as a conversion of a particular film or a guarantee that every character from the novels appears.
Bottom-line recommendation
For most undecided PC players, Steam is the sensible first choice: it arrives in December 2026, has a free demo, publishes detailed requirements and lists the broadest set of confirmed controls and comfort features. Choose Switch instead when playing anywhere is worth waiting until January 2027, and choose PS5 when a living-room setup is your priority and you are willing to wait for technical and pricing information. There is no evidence yet that one version delivers better image quality or frame rate than the others, so treat those as questions for the final storefront pages and reviews rather than reasons to pre-order.
