Yes, heating vape flavour chemicals can plausibly create new compounds, some with recognized hazard classifications. A 2024 study used a graph-convolutional neural network to predict first-stage pyrolysis products from 180 flavour chemicals and then compared their molecular weights with mass-spectrometry fragments. It identified candidates for follow-up, not a measured list of chemicals in users’ lungs.
The work does not show that vaping flavours cause cancer, establish a disease risk, or prove that every predicted product forms in every device. It is an early chemical-screening method that becomes more meaningful when read alongside laboratory aerosol measurements and the limited human evidence available.

What the 2024 AI study actually did
The peer-reviewed paper by Akihiro Kishimoto, Dan Wu and Donal F. O’Shea in Scientific Reports addressed a difficult practical problem: flavour ingredients are heated in a small device whose power, coil, liquid feed and puffing pattern can change the chemistry. Testing every possible flavour and every use condition directly would be extremely slow. The authors therefore built a computational screen to identify chemical transformations that deserve laboratory testing.

It started with 180 reported flavour chemicals
The team assembled 180 representative flavour chemicals reported in e-liquids. The set included common structural families rather than one brand’s recipe. Its composition was:

This is a representative library, not a census of every flavour sold worldwide. A result for one molecule cannot automatically be assigned to all ingredients in that family or to a particular disposable, pod or tank.
The model predicts possible first-stage pyrolysis
The model is described as a Weisfeiler–Lehman graph-convolutional neural network. It represents a molecule as connected atoms and bonds, then uses patterns learned from reaction examples to propose possible unimolecular bond-breaking and rearrangement steps under heat. The reaction training data came from United States patent literature. The flavour molecules were removed from the training material to reduce data leakage, so the model was not simply recalling the compounds it was later asked to predict.
For the 180 inputs, the model generated 7,307 possible products. “Possible” is important: the output is a set of chemically plausible first transformations, not a measurement of what a coil emitted. Several products can be proposed for one starting molecule, and the relative likelihood of each product was not established by the model alone.

Mass-spectrometry fragments supplied a prioritisation check
The researchers next compared the predicted products’ molecular weights with electron-impact mass-spectrometry (EI-MS) fragmentation data in the NIST database for each parent flavour chemical. The underlying idea is that energetic bond breaking in a mass spectrometer may sometimes produce fragments with masses related to products formed when a molecule is heated. A shared molecular weight can therefore flag a product for additional testing.

That comparison produced 1,169 predicted-product/mass-fragment molecular-weight matches. A match does not uniquely identify a structure: different molecules can have the same nominal mass. It also does not establish that the product formed in a vaping device, entered the aerosol, was inhaled, reached lung tissue or caused harm. The result is a screening signal, not direct chemical detection.
How to interpret the headline hazard counts
An IBM Research summary of the paper mapped matched predictions to Globally Harmonized System (GHS) hazard categories. It reported 127 acute-toxic, 153 health-hazard and 225 irritant classifications. These figures describe classifications assigned to candidate substances; they are not concentrations measured in aerosol, counts of patients, or diagnoses.
| Reported count | What it represents | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| 127 acute-toxic | Matched predicted products associated with an acute-toxicity GHS category | How much of any product is emitted or whether a user receives a toxic dose |
| 153 health-hazard | Matched predicted products associated with a health-hazard category | Cancer, chronic disease, or a demonstrated effect in people who vape |
| 225 irritant | Matched predicted products associated with an irritancy category | That irritation occurs at real-world concentrations in every device |
The categories are hazard labels, not risk estimates. Risk requires exposure: the amount produced, the amount inhaled, how often it is inhaled, how much reaches a target tissue and how that dose relates to a biological effect. The computational study did not measure those quantities.
Why the prediction is not an aerosol analysis
Only the first phase of decomposition was modelled
The paper examined first-phase pyrolysis products. It omitted combustion products from this initial screen. A product formed in the first step can subsequently break down, oxidize or react with solvent components, oxygen, water or other ingredients. Those later pathways were outside the study’s scope, so the 7,307 figure should not be read as a complete inventory of heated-liquid chemistry.

Device settings change the chemistry
Actual coil conditions are not fixed. Electrical power, coil material, temperature, puff duration, airflow, liquid volume reaching the coil and the proportion of propylene glycol (PG) to vegetable glycerin (VG) all affect heating and residence time. A dry or partially starved coil can become much hotter than a well-fed coil. The same flavour ingredient can therefore produce different emissions in two devices or even in two puffs from one device.
Because the model did not reproduce a specific device, wattage, coil temperature or puffing protocol, its products cannot be converted into a universal emissions profile. A prediction identifies a pathway worth testing under defined conditions; it does not tell a user what concentration is present in a particular cartridge.
What newer laboratory measurements add
A 2026 paper in Chemical Research in Toxicology supplied a different kind of evidence: direct measurement of carbonyl emissions from aerosols generated with eight representative flavouring chemicals. The experiment varied several conditions rather than treating “vaping” as one fixed exposure.
| Experimental variable | Conditions tested |
|---|---|
| Flavour chemicals | Eight representative compounds spanning flavour classes |
| Device power | 50 W and 90 W |
| PG/VG ratio | 80:20, 50:50 and 20:80 |
| Flavour concentration | 1 mg/mL and 5 mg/mL |
Under those tested conditions, flavoured liquids produced more carbonyl emissions than unflavoured controls. Terpene-based flavours showed the strongest reported effects, with up to twofold higher formaldehyde and up to eightfold higher acrolein than the unflavoured comparisons. Those are condition-specific laboratory results, not a prediction for every flavour, device or power setting.

The experiment also showed why context belongs next to every emissions number: power, flavour concentration and PG/VG composition influenced the output. A higher value in one setup cannot be used as a general average for all products. Conversely, an unflavoured control in that experiment should not be treated as harmless; it is a comparison baseline, and the study did not establish long-term clinical outcomes.
Why “food safe” does not answer the inhalation question
The 2025 review by Belgium’s Superior Health Council distinguishes oral food safety from inhalation safety. Food evaluations are designed around eating a substance, with different routes of exposure, absorption, metabolism and tissue contact. They do not establish what happens when the same ingredient is repeatedly heated and delivered deep into the respiratory tract.
The review says clinical evidence on inhaled flavourings remains limited. Much of the available toxicity work is in vitro, with limited in-vivo evidence, and the identity and effects of products created by heating or mixing flavour chemicals are not fully known. That uncertainty is not proof that every flavour is dangerous; it means an approval or history of food use cannot by itself certify an inhaled formulation.

Did AI prove that vape flavours cause cancer?
No. The 2024 study did not follow people, expose animals, measure cancer incidence, or demonstrate a biological mechanism leading to a tumour. Its model generated candidate molecules and used mass matches to decide which candidates merit further investigation.

It helps to separate the evidence into stages:
| Evidence stage | Question answered | What the vape-flavour studies show |
|---|---|---|
| Computational prediction | Could a starting molecule undergo a particular transformation? | The neural network proposed first-stage pyrolysis products for 180 flavour chemicals. |
| Analytical prioritisation | Does a proposed product have a mass related to an observed fragment? | 1,169 molecular-weight matches flagged candidates; the match is not unique identification. |
| Laboratory aerosol measurement | What chemicals are emitted under a specified setup? | The 2026 experiment measured condition-dependent carbonyl increases for eight flavours. |
| Biological testing | Does a measured dose damage cells, animals or organs? | The cited studies do not provide a complete inhalation-dose or disease assessment. |
| Human clinical evidence | Does exposure cause a health outcome in people? | No causal cancer finding comes from this prediction study. |
Moving from one row to the next requires new measurements. A predicted irritant is not the same as an irritant concentration in a user’s aerosol, and an emitted chemical is not automatically a demonstrated cause of cancer. The distinction is essential when headlines compress several scientific steps into the phrase “AI found toxic chemicals.”
What the findings mean for someone trying to judge a vape product
There is no scientifically justified way to use the 2024 model’s counts as a safety score for a particular liquid. The study did not validate a consumer test kit, certify a coil, or identify a universally safer flavour. Product labels also may not reveal every formulation detail needed to reproduce the laboratory conditions.
A more defensible way to evaluate a claim is to ask four questions:
- What was measured? Was it a predicted molecule, a mass fragment, an emitted concentration, a biological response or a human health outcome?
- Under what conditions? Check the device power, coil, puff protocol, PG/VG ratio, flavour concentration and liquid feed.
- How broad was the sample? Eight compounds, 180 modelled ingredients and a single commercial formulation support different kinds of conclusions.
- What inference is justified? A plausible reaction pathway supports further testing; it does not establish exposure or disease causation.
Why the scientists describe this as an early warning system
O’Shea told Chemistry World in 2024: “As the flavours being used in vapes have never been clinically tested for heating to high temperatures with lung inhalation, it is important to quickly get an understanding of the cocktail of chemicals that vape-users’ lungs are being exposed to.”
That statement captures the study’s value and its boundary. Computational triage can help chemists choose which products to synthesize and measure first, especially when thousands of possible transformations exist. It cannot replace device-specific aerosol sampling, toxicology, exposure assessment or clinical follow-up.
The strongest current conclusion is therefore limited but consequential: heating flavour chemicals can create plausible additional chemistry, and laboratory work has measured higher carbonyl emissions for some flavoured formulations under defined conditions. The evidence does not yet provide a complete list of what any individual inhales or prove that vape flavours cause cancer. Claims stronger than that outrun the methods used.
