Heat-Storing Gel Could Cut Buildings’ Energy Consumption—But It’s Still in Research

A heat-storing material called a salogel could eventually help buildings shift when they use energy for heating or cooling. Texas A&M researchers report that its polymer network changes how salt hydrates crystallize and helps prevent supercooling. But no building installation or measured energy savings has been reported: this is a research platform, not a proven way to lower utility bills.

What is a salogel?

A salogel is a hybrid material made from a polymer structure and inorganic salt hydrates. The salt hydrates store and release thermal energy as their physical state changes. The polymer network helps contain the material and influences how it crystallizes, addressing challenges that can arise when salt hydrates are used alone.

Texas A&M describes the work in its October 8, 2026 report. The research is associated with the university’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering and received support from the National Science Foundation’s Designing Materials to Revolutionize and Engineer our Future program.

How could it affect building energy use?

The proposed idea is to store heat when it is available and release it later. In principle, that could shift some heating or cooling demand—for example, storing heat during the day and releasing it at night. That is a potential use, not a reported building result. The available reporting does not quantify energy savings or show that salogels have reduced a building’s energy consumption.

300pcs Bar Packaging Bag Energy Gel Pouch Coffee Powder Sample Sachet Empty Tea
  • Flat Open-Top Structure: Built with flat open-top design and pre-cut tear notches along the edge, these pouches support convenient loading of contents and simple hand tearing when accessing stored items for daily packaging work
  • Stable Panel Thickness Build: Made with consistent single-side thickness construction to maintain steady shape during filling and sealing, the pouch body stays intact and resists minor stretching under regular packaging and handling processes
  • Sealable Closure Compatibility: Works smoothly with thermal sealing equipment to form tight closed edges after filling, and also supports vacuum processing for reliable containment of items inside the finished pouches
  • Compact Dimension Layout: Designed with defined outer and usable inner measurements to fit small portions of loose items, the balanced sizing makes it easy to arrange and stack pouches within storage cabinets and display areas
  • Multi-Scenario Packing Fit: Suitable for portion packing of dry granular and powdery items for household sorting and commercial sampling needs, adaptable for different small-batch packaging and organization tasks

What did the researchers report?

The Texas A&M report says the polymer network changed the way the salt hydrates crystallize and helped prevent supercooling. Supercooling occurs when a material remains liquid below the temperature at which it would normally crystallize; it can delay heat release. The team says it still aims to reduce supercooling further.

The research lead is Kartik Kumar Rajagopalan, a research scientist in Texas A&M’s Soft Matter Facility, under the leadership of Svetlana A. Sukhishvili, professor and facility director. The work is described in the 2026 article “Hybrid Polymer–Inorganic Salt Hydrate Materials: Applications for Heat Storage and Beyond,” by Rajagopalan and colleagues in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces (DOI: 10.1021/acsami.6c07502). Tech Xplore’s October 8, 2026 coverage reproduces the university report and identifies the publication.

What challenges remain?

Salt hydrates used on their own can leak and degrade with repeated use. The polymer network is intended to help contain the material, but the team’s stated next steps show that durability and manufacturability remain active questions.

  • Mechanical strength: The researchers plan to improve the material’s strength.
  • Crystallization behavior: They aim to reduce supercooling further so heat release is less likely to be delayed.
  • Processing: They plan to test 3D printing as a way to process the material.

The group also plans to apply the material to electrochemical energy conversion, an area beyond the proposed building heat-storage use.

Is salogel ready for buildings or available to buy?

The cited coverage does not identify a building installation, a quantified building-energy reduction, or a salogel product for sale. It therefore does not establish that salogels are ready for commercial building use or can currently cut household energy bills. The work is best understood as materials research into heat storage and related functions.
