For a home that needs both cooling and heating, a ducted air-source heat pump is usually the more versatile choice. It cools like central air conditioning in summer, then reverses the refrigeration cycle to heat the house in winter. Central air conditioning is often the better fit when you need cooling only, already have a reliable furnace, or want the simplest conventional replacement.
Climate changes the answer. In hot-humid areas, moisture removal, run time and sizing can matter as much as the cooling efficiency rating. In hot-dry areas, prioritize capacity and efficiency at high outdoor temperatures, duct performance and whether winter heating is required. Neither technology is automatically superior in every house: the right decision depends on the load calculation, equipment match, controls, electrical service, fuel prices and local incentives.

What is the difference between a heat pump and central air conditioning?
Heat pump: one system for cooling and heating
A ducted air-source heat pump uses the same basic vapor-compression process as an air conditioner. In summer, it removes heat from indoor air and releases that heat outdoors. In winter, a reversing valve changes the direction of refrigerant flow so the outdoor unit extracts heat from outside air and moves it indoors.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program describes the main advantage plainly: “An advantage of air-source heat pumps is that one system can provide both space heating and cooling in a building.” ENERGY STAR similarly describes a ducted heat pump as “a central air conditioner that also works in reverse to provide whole-house space heating in winter.” The system may still use supplemental or backup heat during very cold weather, depending on the model, design temperature and controls.

Central air conditioner: cooling paired with another heater
A central air conditioner only moves heat out of the house. It requires a separate heating system, commonly a furnace, boiler or electric resistance heater. The indoor coil, outdoor condenser and blower distribute cooled air through ductwork, while the furnace or other heater handles winter operation.
That arrangement can be sensible when the existing furnace is in good condition, correctly sized and expected to remain in service. Replacing only the cooling equipment can also avoid changes to the heating controls, fuel supply and backup-heat strategy. The trade-off is that you maintain two separate systems and do not gain a heat pump’s ability to shift more of the home’s heating load to electricity.
Which performs better in a hot climate?
Both systems can cool a properly designed home in hot weather. The decisive questions are how efficiently they operate at the local outdoor temperature, whether the equipment is correctly matched to the indoor coil and blower, and how well it controls humidity. A high rating on a nameplate cannot compensate for undersized ducts, poor airflow, refrigerant problems or an oversized unit that cycles off before removing moisture.

Hot-humid climates
In a hot-humid climate, indoor comfort has two components: sensible cooling (lowering air temperature) and latent cooling (removing water vapor). The U.S. Department of Energy notes that moisture loads can remain high even after insulation and better windows reduce sensible heat gain. A system can therefore reach the thermostat set point while the house still feels clammy.
DOE’s humidity-control guidance states that “Modern air conditioning systems are very effective at reducing the temperature, but not as effective at removing moisture from the air.” The problem is especially pronounced when an air conditioner is oversized. It satisfies the thermostat quickly, shuts off and provides too little coil contact time for dehumidification.
A variable-capacity heat pump or air conditioner can run for longer periods at lower output, which generally improves temperature stability and gives the coil more opportunity to condense moisture. The benefit depends on controls, airflow and the actual latent load; variable capacity is not a guarantee of low humidity.

Hot-dry climates
Hot-dry homes usually have a smaller latent load, so sensible capacity and high-temperature efficiency become the dominant concerns. Compare capacity at the local design temperature rather than relying only on nominal tonnage. Inspect duct insulation and leakage, because attic ducts can lose substantial cooling before air reaches the rooms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA heat pump has an additional advantage in this climate if winter heating is needed: the same outdoor unit provides heat without a separate combustion appliance. If winter heating is unnecessary or an existing furnace will remain, central AC may deliver the required service with less equipment change.
Cooling ratings: SEER2, EER2 and HSPF2
Use current metrics and matched-system ratings when comparing proposals. SEER2 estimates seasonal cooling efficiency under a range of conditions. EER2 measures efficiency at a defined rating condition and is useful for judging performance during hot, high-load periods. For a heat pump, HSPF2 indicates seasonal heating efficiency.
| Equipment | ENERGY STAR Version 6.2 minimum split-system thresholds | What the metric tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Central air conditioner | SEER2 15.2 and EER2 12.0 | Seasonal and rated-condition cooling efficiency |
| Air-source heat pump | SEER2 15.2, EER2 11.0 and HSPF2 7.8 | Seasonal cooling, rated-condition cooling and seasonal heating efficiency |
These are certification thresholds, not predictions for a particular house. The rating applies to a matched outdoor unit, indoor coil, metering device and blower combination. Ask for the AHRI or equivalent matched-system certificate and the exact model numbers. A premium outdoor unit paired with an incompatible indoor coil may not achieve the advertised rating.
For heat pumps, also request heating capacity at the outdoor temperatures used in your local design calculation. A unit that has adequate cooling capacity may not provide enough heat at winter design conditions. The contractor should explain when supplemental heat will operate and how the controls choose between the heat pump and backup source.

When cooling alone is not enough
If indoor relative humidity remains high after the temperature reaches its set point, first verify sizing, airflow, duct leakage and thermostat settings. A blower that moves too much air across the coil can reduce moisture removal, while inadequate airflow can freeze the coil or damage the compressor. Ask the installer to document design airflow and commissioning measurements.

In a hot-humid house, a whole-house dehumidifier can operate as a companion to either a heat pump or central AC. DOE and National Renewable Energy Laboratory research evaluated separating latent control from temperature control: the central system handled sensible cooling while a dedicated dehumidifier managed moisture. The cited study used indoor relative humidity below 60% as a comfort target and reported improved comfort with reduced utility costs in its tested configuration.
A dehumidifier adds purchase, electrical and maintenance costs and can reject heat indoors, increasing cooling demand. It is an option when moisture loads remain high, not a mandatory accessory for every heat-pump installation. Have the contractor estimate the latent load and explain whether the proposed thermostat, variable-speed blower, reheat strategy or dedicated dehumidifier will maintain your target humidity.
Why a slightly lower rating can feel better
In humid weather, a correctly sized system with longer cycles can provide better comfort than a higher-rated system that is too large. Efficiency should be evaluated together with run time, humidity performance and duct condition. A lower SEER2 system that operates steadily may feel more comfortable than a high-SEER2 system that short-cycles, although the lower-rated unit may use more electricity over a full season.

Yes, a properly selected heat pump can cool during extreme heat, but its capacity and efficiency decline as outdoor temperature rises. The relevant evidence is the manufacturer’s performance data at your local design temperature, not a generic statement that the unit is “high efficiency.” Request a capacity table showing output and efficiency at representative high outdoor temperatures, and verify that the indoor coil, expansion device and blower are the specified matched components.
Variable-capacity equipment can reduce output as the load falls, then increase it when temperatures climb. This may improve comfort and reduce cycling. Fixed-capacity systems can also work well when sized from a Manual J or equivalent calculation and installed with adequate airflow. Oversizing to “handle the worst day” often creates humidity and comfort problems for the many hours when the full capacity is unnecessary.
In a heat-pump system, ask what happens during a heat wave and a winter cold snap. The controls should identify the outdoor temperature at which backup heat is enabled, prevent unnecessary simultaneous operation and provide a safe fallback if the outdoor unit is unavailable. For homes with limited electrical service, the contractor should calculate the maximum demand of the compressor, blower, supplemental heat and other major loads before installation.

Measured energy results: useful evidence, not a guarantee
Field and laboratory comparisons show why configuration matters. In a 2017 NREL/DOE Building America comparison, tested SEER 21.5 mini-split heat-pump configurations used the least seasonal and peak-demand energy among the configurations tested. One comparison reported 24.8% seasonal energy savings and a 27% reduction in summer peak demand versus the cited SEER 13 central baseline on a typical summer day.
Those percentages describe specific equipment, controls, building conditions and weather. They should not be presented as guaranteed savings for every ducted heat pump or every central air conditioner. Duct losses, thermostat behavior, infiltration, shading, indoor set points, electricity rates and maintenance can produce very different results. Use the study as evidence that efficient variable-capacity equipment can perform well, then obtain a house-specific estimate.
Illustrative cooling energy and cost figures
The following figures come from 2024 U.S. Department of Energy Federal Energy Management Program guidance for a hot-humid/Southeast example. They are examples for that region and climate, not universal bills.
| Example central AC | SEER2 | Annual electricity use | Annual energy cost | Lifetime energy-cost savings |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Best-available example | 23.5 | 5,222 kWh | $575 | $6,724 over 18 years |
| ENERGY STAR example | 15.2 | 8,074 kWh | $889 | Not stated |
The difference between these examples is roughly 2,852 kWh and $314 per year under the assumptions used in that guidance. Your result will change with local rates, cooling hours, indoor temperature, equipment size and installation quality. Do not multiply the example by your own expected life and call it a guaranteed return; use it to frame questions for a contractor or utility program.
Heat pump versus central AC: decision factors
| Factor | Heat pump | Central AC |
|---|---|---|
| Services provided | Cooling and heating from one outdoor system | Cooling only; separate heater required |
| Best fit | Homes replacing both heating and cooling, or seeking electric heating and fuel flexibility | Homes needing cooling only or retaining a reliable furnace |
| Humidity management | Depends on sizing, controls and run time; may need supplemental dehumidification | Same humidity limitations; oversizing can cause short cycling |
| Key cooling metrics | SEER2 and EER2 | SEER2 and EER2 |
| Heating metric | HSPF2 plus capacity at design temperatures | Not applicable to the cooling unit; evaluate the separate heater |
| Backup planning | May require electric resistance, gas or another backup source in cold weather | Existing furnace or other heater remains the backup and primary winter source |
| Installation issues | Refrigerant system, ductwork, electrical capacity, controls and backup heat | Refrigerant system, ductwork, electrical capacity and coordination with heater |
Replacing central AC with a heat pump: what changes?
A heat pump can often use existing supply and return ducts, but “drop-in replacement” should not be assumed. The contractor must verify duct size, leakage, insulation, airflow, indoor coil compatibility, condensate drainage, refrigerant lines, electrical disconnects and thermostat wiring. A heat pump may require different controls, an outdoor temperature sensor or additional conductors for backup heat.

- Calculate the loads. Require a room-by-room Manual J or equivalent calculation for cooling and heating. The result should show design temperatures, sensible and latent loads and recommended capacity.
- Inspect the ducts. Measure leakage and airflow, check insulation in unconditioned spaces and correct restrictions before selecting equipment. A larger unit does not fix inadequate ducts.
- Choose matched equipment. Request exact indoor and outdoor model numbers, SEER2, EER2, HSPF2 and capacity data at local design temperatures.
- Design the controls. Specify thermostat staging, variable-speed operation, defrost behavior, backup-heat lockout and humidity control. Confirm how emergency heat is activated and what it costs to run.
- Check electrical service. Confirm breaker, disconnect, conductor, grounding and panel capacity. Electric resistance backup can require substantially more capacity than the compressor alone.
- Commission the system. Have the installer document refrigerant charge, airflow, temperature split, static pressure, condensate drainage and thermostat operation. Obtain manuals and model numbers for future service.
If the existing furnace is fairly new and reliable, a dual-fuel arrangement may keep it for backup while the heat pump handles routine heating. If the furnace is near the end of its life, compare the cost of replacing both appliances with one heat-pump system plus appropriate backup.

Installation quality matters more than the label alone
Ask for a written scope that separates equipment, duct modifications, electrical work, permits, controls, startup and disposal. The proposal should identify who performs the load calculation and commissioning. Require the matched-system rating rather than a single outdoor-unit efficiency number.
- Manual J or equivalent cooling and heating load calculation
- Matched indoor/outdoor equipment ratings and model numbers
- SEER2 and EER2 for cooling; HSPF2 and low-temperature capacity for a heat pump
- Duct leakage, airflow and static-pressure testing
- Humidity-control strategy for a hot-humid home
- Electrical-panel and backup-heat requirements

Costs, incentives and operating economics
Compare total installed cost, expected annual energy use, local electricity and fuel prices, maintenance and likely replacement timing. A heat pump may cost more than a cooling-only replacement because it adds heating capability, controls and sometimes electrical or backup-heat work. It can also avoid a separate furnace replacement and may reduce fuel use. Central AC may be less disruptive when the furnace and ducts are already suitable.
Incentives change by year, location, income qualification and equipment rating. The federal pages cited by ENERGY STAR describe 2023–2025 rules that included up to 30% or $2,000 for qualifying heat pumps and up to 30% or $600 for qualifying central air conditioners, subject to efficiency and installation requirements. Those dates do not establish what is available in 2026. Verify current federal, state and utility programs before signing a contract, and ask whether the installer must meet specific documentation or labor requirements.
Maintenance and operating practices
For either system
- Replace or clean filters on the schedule appropriate to the filter and household dust load.
- Keep outdoor coils clear of vegetation and debris, while preserving the manufacturer’s required clearance.
- Have condensate drains inspected and cleaned, especially in humid climates.
- Schedule professional service when airflow drops, ice appears, breakers trip or the system runs continuously without reaching the set point.
Additional heat-pump considerations
Keep the outdoor unit’s air path clear and understand the normal defrost cycle. Do not switch repeatedly to emergency heat unless instructed; emergency heat can be substantially more expensive than compressor operation. Ask for the manufacturer’s low-temperature operating range and the service procedure for a refrigerant leak or failed reversing valve.
Additional central-AC considerations
Coordinate cooling maintenance with the furnace blower and evaporator coil. A dirty indoor coil, weak blower capacitor or furnace control problem can reduce cooling even when the outdoor condenser appears to run normally. If the furnace is aging, include its expected repair and replacement costs in the comparison rather than evaluating the condenser alone.
A practical decision checklist
Choose a heat pump when most of these statements are true
- You need both heating and cooling.
- The duct system is usable or can be repaired within the project budget.
- You want one integrated system and the option to reduce dependence on heating fuel.
- Your electrical service can support the compressor and planned backup heat.
- The proposed model has documented capacity at local summer and winter design temperatures.
- The contractor has a credible humidity plan for a hot-humid location.
Choose central AC when most of these statements are true
- Cooling is the only new service required.
- An existing furnace is reliable, efficient enough for your fuel prices and expected to remain.
- You want the least change to winter controls and fuel infrastructure.
- A properly sized, matched system can meet the cooling and latent loads.
- The proposal includes duct, airflow and humidity improvements rather than only a larger condenser.
Bottom line for hotter climates
A heat pump is generally the better all-purpose choice when a home needs both heating and cooling, provided the model is rated for local temperatures and installed with suitable controls, ducts and backup heat. Central AC remains the straightforward choice for cooling-only replacements or homes keeping a good furnace. In hot-humid climates, select for humidity control and long, stable run times; in hot-dry climates, emphasize high-temperature capacity, efficiency and duct performance. Base the final decision on a documented load calculation, matched-system ratings, commissioning measurements and current local energy prices and incentives—not on the equipment label alone.
