The official listings identified for this game cover the tabletop edition and a Steam release; they do not confirm an iOS or Android app. Treat mobile availability as unconfirmed rather than assuming that the Steam version is a phone or tablet release.

The two headline numbers are not contradictory. One to six is the capacity printed for the physical game, while one to twelve is the capacity shown for the digital Steam adaptation. They describe different products.
How many people can play the physical board game?
Days of Wonder’s official Heat product page specifies 1–6 players, with an estimated play time of 60 minutes. The core rulebook also presents the game for one through six players. Six is therefore the maximum number of human seats in a normal physical game, not a suggested maximum for a particular track or scenario.

A two-, three-, four- or five-person session still uses the same base game. The difference is how much of the starting grid is occupied by people and whether you want automated cars to make the race more crowded or competitive.
Six human players
With six people, every available player position can be assigned to a human driver. No bot is needed simply to reach the game’s stated capacity. You may still use any optional Legends rules your group wants, but the published player range does not require automated opponents at six.
Two to five human players
Smaller groups can race with only the people at the table, or add automated Legends. The publisher describes Legends as a way to add opponents in multiplayer games, and the Asmodee product description specifically notes that bot players provide competition when fewer than six people play. That lets a four-person group create a fuller field without asking anyone to control two human teams.

One human player
The physical game’s “1” player listing depends on the Legends system. You control your own driver while the automated Legend drivers handle the other positions. The advanced rulebook describes these Legends as bots for solo and multiplayer games, so solo play is an official mode rather than an unofficial house rule.

Can you play Heat: Pedal to the Metal solo?
Yes. To run a solo race, add the automated drivers provided by the Legends Module and follow the relevant Legends rules in the game materials. The publisher’s description is explicit that legendary automated drivers let you play solo; the same system can be used as additional opponents in a multiplayer race.
What a solo race changes
- You still make the decisions for your own driver and manage your own race.
- Legend drivers take the place of human opponents and are resolved using their automated rules.
- The track can contain several competing cars even though only one person is making decisions.
- The Legends rules are also suitable for learning the flow of a race before inviting a full group.
The available descriptions establish the mode and the role of the bots, but they do not provide a universal solo difficulty recommendation. Choose the number of Legends and the track setup according to the rulebook’s instructions for the version you own rather than assuming that every circuit uses an identical field.
How automated Legends work in a multiplayer game
Legends are not a second physical player account and they do not turn the board game into an online service. They are automated drivers represented and resolved at the table. Their purpose is to occupy additional positions and create race pressure when the human group is small.
When to add them
- You want a solo race: add Legends because there is no second human driver.
- Your group is small: add enough automated opponents to make the race more contested, following the setup rules for your edition.
- Your group wants a short, low-overhead game: leave the extra positions empty if the rules and your preferred setup allow it; a bot is an option for competition, not a requirement to reach six players.
Do not confuse “up to six players” with “six cars must always be on the track.” The player count identifies human participants the game accommodates. Legends are a tool for filling or challenging the field, not a change to the physical game’s maximum human count.

What does the Steam version support?
The official Steam store listing gives the digital adaptation a 1–12-player capacity. It also lists single-player, online PvP, shared/split-screen PvP, cross-platform multiplayer and Remote Play Together. These are digital features and should not be read back into the tabletop edition.
Single-player on Steam
Steam lists single-player support, so the digital version can be launched without another person joining the session. The listing does not require you to own the physical game, and it does not describe the digital single-player mode as identical to the board game’s Legends implementation. Treat it as the adaptation’s own listed single-player option.
Online PvP
Online PvP allows people to compete through networked sessions rather than sitting around one physical board. The listing’s maximum of 12 applies to the digital adaptation; it is not evidence that the boxed game can seat twelve humans.

The Steam listing also identifies shared/split-screen PvP. This is the relevant option when multiple players use one supported screen or local machine rather than separate remote sessions. The exact controller, display and operating-system requirements should be checked in the current Steam listing before arranging a local event, because the player-count statement alone does not specify hardware combinations.

Cross-platform multiplayer and Remote Play Together
Steam advertises cross-platform multiplayer and Remote Play Together. “Cross-platform” should be read as the feature named by that listing, not as a promise that every console, phone or browser version can join. Remote Play Together is a Steam feature for inviting others into a supported session; it does not establish that an iOS or Android edition exists.

If your question is about buying the boxed racing game for a group, plan around six human players. If your question is about hosting a larger digital lobby, use the Steam listing’s twelve-player figure and its multiplayer feature list.

An official iOS or Android release was not confirmed by the official sources identified for this question. Those sources document the physical game and a Steam version. That is different from proving that no mobile app exists anywhere: mobile stores and regional listings can change, and an unlisted or newly released app would require a current App Store and Google Play check.

For now, the safe answer is:
- Confirmed in the identified official material: physical Heat: Pedal to the Metal and a Steam digital adaptation.
- Not confirmed in that material: an official iPhone, iPad or Android edition.
- Do not assume: a Steam listing, Remote Play Together or the phrase “cross-platform” means there is a native mobile app.
If you are searching on a phone, verify the publisher, product name and platform before installing anything. A listing for an unrelated racing game, a fan-made adaptation or a remote-streaming utility is not the same as an official mobile version of Heat.

What is Heat: Legends, and do you need it?
Heat: Legends is an expansion that adds the automated Legend-driver content used for solo races and for filling the grid in multiplayer. Days of Wonder labels it “NOT A STAND-ALONE GAME!” and states that it requires an original copy of Heat to play.
Buy the base game when you need the game itself
The product to look for is the base Heat: Pedal to the Metal board game. It supplies the physical game system and the player range of one to six. Buying only an expansion will not give you a complete, playable copy.
Add Legends when solo or fuller small-group races matter
Choose Heat: Legends as an addition when you specifically want the Legends content for solo opponents or a more populated field with fewer human players. It expands the base game; it does not replace it or raise the physical human limit above six.
Common player-count mistakes
Mistaking the digital number for the boxed game
The Steam listing’s 1–12 figure belongs to the digital adaptation. The physical game remains a 1–6-player product in the official product page and core rulebook.
Assuming solo means “no automated opponents”
The physical game’s solo support is built around Legends. If you remove the automated drivers, you are no longer using the published solo structure described by the Legends rules.
Buying the expansion as a complete game
Heat: Legends requires the original Heat game. Check the “not a stand-alone game” warning before purchasing if you do not already own the base box.
Calling Steam a mobile release
Steam availability identifies a PC-oriented digital storefront listing, not a confirmed iOS or Android app. The mobile status remains unconfirmed from the official material identified here.

Which version fits your group?
- One to six people in the same room: choose the physical game; add Legends for solo play or more automated competition.
- More than six remote or digital participants: investigate the Steam adaptation, whose listing supports up to twelve players.
- Local digital play on one screen: look for the listed shared/split-screen PvP support and confirm the current hardware requirements.
- Friends on different supported systems: use the Steam listing’s cross-platform multiplayer claim as the starting point, then verify that each participant’s platform is included.
- A phone-only purchase: wait for a verifiable iOS or Android listing; the identified official sources do not confirm one.
