The winning rhythm in Heat: Pedal to the Metal is controlled acceleration, not maximum speed every round. Treat heat as a delayed hand-management penalty, spend burst-speed effects only when they change track position or solve a tactical problem, and plan your cooling turn before the next important corner. Gear selection determines how much of your hand you commit, while brakes, tires, wings and cooling upgrades let different cars handle the same risk in different ways.

The tabletop game is a 1–6-player racing design from Days of Wonder and Asmodee, recommended for ages 10 and up, with an average play time of about 60 minutes. A reported iOS and Android adaptation includes championship progression, garage upgrades, weather, road conditions, sponsorships and Legends content, but the cited report gives no confirmed launch date. Availability can therefore change by region and platform.

Is Heat: Pedal to the Metal coming to mobile?

A mobile adaptation has been reported for iOS and Android. The planned feature set includes championship gameplay, persistent strategy, four maps, garage upgrades, weather, road conditions, sponsorships and Legends opponents. However, the report does not establish a release date, so do not assume that the game is downloadable merely because a store listing or preview has appeared. Check the current iOS or Android listing in your region before treating availability as confirmed.

Until the digital version is released, the board game rules are the reliable basis for strategy. A mobile implementation may automate card draws, slipstream calculations and Legends movement, but the decisions that matter should remain familiar: choose a gear, play the required number of cards, total their movement, respect corner limits and decide when future hand quality is worth more than immediate speed.

How the race system creates heat decisions

Each round follows a hand-management loop. Your gear determines how many cards you must play, and the values on those cards determine movement. You are not simply selecting a speed number; you are committing part of a changing hand to one turn. A high gear can produce a large move but requires more cards and leaves less flexibility for the next decision. A low gear gives up immediate distance while helping you regain control.

Corner speed limits are the central risk threshold. Staying at or below the suggested speed keeps the car predictable. Exceeding it can create heat and, if you push too far, a spinout. The correct question is not “Can I go faster?” but “What does the extra speed buy, and can I afford the recovery it creates?”

Heat is a delayed cost

Heat cards begin in your engine. When you pay heat, those cards move into your draw deck. They do not act like normal speed cards when drawn; instead, they occupy hand space. A spectacular move now can therefore weaken several later hands rather than costing only the current turn.

Cooling moves Heat cards from your hand back to the engine. That makes the timing of recovery crucial. If you know a major corner or acceleration window is approaching, preserve a round in which cooling is possible instead of filling the deck with more future dead weight. A car that looks fast on one straight can become slow when its next hands contain too many Heat cards.

What a spinout really costs

A spinout is more than lost movement. It can surrender track position, expose you to an overtake and force your next decisions around damage control rather than attack. Before exceeding a corner limit, compare the likely place gained with the heat payment and the probability that the move leaves you unable to cool or brake effectively. If the extra spaces do not change your position or line into the next section, the risk is usually poor value.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

When to use “nitro” or burst speed

The tabletop game has no literal nitro button. For a mobile player, “nitro” is best understood as a burst-speed decision: high-value speed cards, higher gears, slipstream, gas-pedal effects, turbochargers and fuel upgrades can all create a short acceleration window. Each has an opportunity cost, such as heat, stress, a weaker future hand or a narrower line into the next corner.

Spend a burst when it changes the race

  • Take a position: use the extra movement to complete an overtake or defend a place that matters before the next corner.
  • Clear a corner: a controlled burst can put you through a corner before rivals arrive, reducing the chance of being boxed in.
  • Create a safe draft: a modest move that places you behind a rival for slipstream can be better than paying heat for a larger unsupported jump.
  • Reach a tactical line: use acceleration when it opens a cleaner approach to the following section, not merely to increase the distance counter.

Do not burn heat for cosmetic speed

A burst that gains a few spaces without improving position, corner entry or drafting access often converts a good hand into a bad one. After a burst, do not repeat the push automatically. First inspect the next hand and your cooling options. If Heat cards are likely to occupy several draws, the strongest follow-up may be a recovery turn even when another speed effect is available.

Cornering without spinning out

Use this sequence whenever a corner is close:

  1. Identify the limit. Read the corner’s suggested speed and note whether the current gear forces more cards than you can comfortably control.
  2. Estimate the hand. Count likely speed values, Heat cards and any brakes or other variable effects. Do not assume every card in the deck is available this round.
  3. Price the over-speed. Determine the heat, stress or other cost required to exceed the limit, then compare it with the place or gap you would gain.
  4. Choose a line. A legal, slightly slower approach that preserves a cooling option can outperform a risky entry that leaves you stranded after the corner.
  5. Reserve recovery. Before committing, identify the next round in which cooling, braking or a lower gear can restore control.

Brakes, tires and wings

Brakes provide variable speed choices, which makes them especially useful when a hand is close to—but not exactly at—the corner limit. They can turn an awkward high-value draw into a legal entry instead of forcing you to waste movement or accept a spinout.

Tires can improve corner speed or provide cooldown, giving them a dual role in attack and recovery. Wings improve corner speed but require heat, so they are strongest on tracks where the additional corner performance changes overtakes or prevents a dangerous slowdown. They are not a free replacement for cooling; their heat requirement must be included in the same decision as the speed gain.

Gear timing: commit only as much hand as the track supports

Gear controls the number of cards played. Higher gears increase potential movement but demand a larger commitment from the hand. Lower gears sacrifice immediate output while reducing the number of cards you must expose and helping you regain control after a burst or difficult corner.

Large gear shifts may require paying Heat. Treat a rapid change as a resource decision rather than a free adjustment. A shift into a high gear is justified when the straight is long enough to exploit it and the resulting hand will still support the next corner. A shift down is often correct when the next section is technical, when your hand contains Heat cards, or when you need to create a cooling opportunity.

Situation Preferred gear approach Reason
Long straight with a clean hand Move up if the extra cards produce useful speed More commitment is supported by distance and recovery time.
Corner approaching with uncertain cards Stay moderate or shift down Fewer required cards preserve braking and legal-entry options.
Heat-heavy hand Use a lower commitment and plan cooling Heat cards occupy space without adding ordinary movement.
Immediate overtake opportunity Shift or burst only if the place changes The cost is justified by a concrete positional gain.

Build a cooling plan before you need it

Cooling is easiest to waste because it feels slower than acceleration. In practice, it protects every later hand. Before a decisive straight or corner, ask three questions: how many Heat cards could appear, which effect returns them to the engine, and what will the car do if the cooling card is not drawn?

Cooling-system cards provide cooldown directly. Tires can also support recovery, while body cards reduce Stress and help keep a burst-heavy build from becoming fragile. A recovery plan should have a fallback: a lower gear, a brake choice or a legal corner speed that remains acceptable if the ideal cooling effect is missing.

Upgrade choices and the trade-offs they create

Garage upgrades do not remove the heat-versus-speed problem; they change which side of the trade-off your car handles best. Compare a build on six practical axes: heat efficiency, corner performance, access to cooldown, stress control, overtaking potential and recovery after a burst.

Upgrade or effect Primary benefit Cost or limitation Best use
Cooling-system cards More reliable cooldown They occupy deck or hand capacity when drawn Tracks with repeated bursts or short recovery windows.
Brakes Variable speed control Less direct acceleration than a pure speed card Technical corners and uncertain hands.
Tires Higher corner speed or cooldown The benefit depends on timing and available hand space Corner-heavy tracks where legal speed changes position.
Wings Improved corner speed Requires heat When corner performance is worth a measured heat payment.
Body cards Reduced Stress They do not directly increase movement Long events in which repeated pushing would otherwise destabilize the car.
R.P.M. and gas-pedal effects Stronger overtaking windows More commitment to a specific attack Passing zones where one move can secure track position.
Turbochargers and fuel Larger bursts Heat or other resource costs Planned attacks with a clear entry and recovery turn.

Slipstream: the efficient alternative to brute force

Slipstream is strongest when it converts a modest hand into a positional move. Instead of paying heat to create all the distance yourself, use the rival’s position to move into a better place when the rules allow it. The value is highest near an overtake, a corner entry or a section where one space of positioning determines who gets the next tactical option.

Do not chase slipstream when the resulting position creates a worse corner approach. A draft that puts you directly behind a rival but leaves no room to brake can be less useful than a slower independent move with a cooling card preserved.

Advanced modules and how they change planning

The advanced booklet adds the Garage module for customized cars, Legends bots for solo or multiplayer opponents, Weather and Road Conditions, the Championship System, sponsorship cards and Tournament Mode. Learn the core race before adding these systems: each introduces another variable to the same heat, hand and corner decisions.

Weather and road conditions

These modules can change how valuable a cornering upgrade, brake or cooling effect is from one race to the next. Re-evaluate the build around the actual conditions rather than assuming a favorite upgrade remains optimal on every map.

Championships and tournaments

In a single race, a risky burst may be acceptable if it decides the finish. In a championship or tournament, preserving deck quality and avoiding repeated stress can be worth more than one spectacular result. Favor upgrades that recover consistently when several events are linked.

Legends opponents

Legends content supplies opponents for solo or multiplayer play. Their predictable or automated movement can alter the value of drafting and defensive positioning, so judge a burst by the bot’s likely line as well as your own hand.

A practical race plan

  1. Opening laps: learn the track’s corner sequence and avoid paying heat before you know which positions matter.
  2. Approach the first decisive corner: keep enough flexibility for braking or a lower gear; do not let a high gear force an unnecessary over-speed.
  3. Mid-race attack: use slipstream or a burst when it completes an overtake, opens a gap or secures a better line.
  4. Recovery lap or turn: return Heat cards to the engine as soon as the track gives you a safe window, especially after turbo, fuel or an aggressive gear shift.
  5. Final section: spend remaining resources on a concrete finishing objective. There may be no later hand in which to recover, but a final push still needs to clear the corner safely.

Common mistakes and fixes

Using every high card immediately

Symptom: an impressive straight followed by hands clogged with Heat cards. Fix: reserve at least one burst for a position-changing moment and identify the next cooling window before spending the first one.

Ignoring the following corner

Symptom: a speed gain that ends with a spinout or a forced slowdown. Fix: price the entry into the next corner before committing to the current straight.

Shifting gears without a resource budget

Symptom: a gear change consumes heat and leaves too few useful cards to justify it. Fix: shift only when the new gear matches the available hand and the length of the section ahead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating cooling as lost time

Symptom: every round is an attack, but later movement collapses. Fix: regard cooling as an investment in future hand quality and schedule it before a major corner or acceleration window.

Adding advanced modules too early

Symptom: weather, sponsorships and custom upgrades obscure basic heat decisions. Fix: learn the core race first, then add one module at a time so you can see which new trade-off changed your result.

Mobile-versus-tabletop expectations

A digital version can automate setup, card shuffling, corner checks, slipstream resolution and Legends movement. It may also make championship continuity and garage upgrades easier to track between races. Automation does not make heat management simpler: the important choice is still whether a card, gear or upgrade creates enough position to justify its delayed cost.

When evaluating a mobile release, look for four things: confirmed platform availability, whether championship progress persists between races, how Legends opponents are implemented, and whether the digital rules preserve the same hand-management decisions as the tabletop game. A fast interface is useful only if it keeps those trade-offs visible.

Quick decision checklist

  • What is the next corner’s speed limit?
  • How many cards must this gear commit?
  • Are Heat cards likely to occupy the next hand?
  • Will the burst change position, clear the corner or create a useful draft?
  • What is the cooling action after the push?
  • If the ideal card is missing, can brakes, a lower gear or a legal slower line save the turn?

The best drivers in Heat: Pedal to the Metal do not avoid speed. They make speed pay for itself. A burst should produce a place, a gap, a draft or a decisive line; otherwise, protect the hand, cool the engine and wait for the track to offer a better exchange.
