There is no universally best model or established value winner: the right choice depends on temperature workflow, features, footprint, local price and the service available where you live.
What a heat exchanger does
An HX machine uses a heat-transfer path connected to its boiler to heat brewing water; that boiler also supplies steam. This design can let you brew and steam simultaneously. A dual-boiler machine instead has separate brew and steam boilers, which can provide more independent control over brewing and steaming temperatures. Neither architecture makes every machine identical: compare each model’s actual temperature-management design and the workflow its maker describes. Retailer’s HX and dual-boiler guide

How to compare HX machines
Temperature management
Check what the machine’s controls actually manage. A PID label alone does not show that the machine independently measures or sets brew-water temperature. In an HX design, a boiler PID may manage boiler temperature while the brewing water follows a separate heat-exchange path. Look for the specific model’s explanation of its temperature system and operating workflow rather than treating “PID” as a like-for-like feature.

Capacity is one specification, not a performance verdict. Compare it alongside whether the boiler is insulated and any model-specific evidence about recovery or repeated drinks. Do not infer that a larger boiler necessarily makes better espresso or steams faster.
#1 Best Overall
- Italian Made - Each Diletta machine is handcrafted in Milan, Italy.
- Stainless Steel - Sturdy stainless steel is used for the Bello's case, frame, and boiler.
- Manual Controls - All-manual brew and steam controls make you focus on your barista skills for good coffee.
- Heat Exchanger - A heat exchange style boiler allows for simultaneous brewing and steaming.
- Color Options - Choose your Bello in polished stainless, black, or white powdercoat finishes.
Pump and water setup
Check whether the machine uses a vibration or rotary pump and whether it draws water from a reservoir, supports plumbing in, or both. These details can affect installation and day-to-day use; rely on the exact model’s listing or manufacturer documentation for them.
Footprint, controls and ownership
Compare dimensions, control layout, warm-up and maintenance instructions, and access to parts and service in your region. Before buying, verify the current local price, stock, warranty, and service coverage. Those factors vary by market, and no single current value winner is established.

Examples in the HX category
A buying-guide comparison includes several machines with different capacities and temperature-control approaches. Its specifications are useful for shortlisting, but they are not independent performance tests or a universal ranking. Comparison of HX espresso machines
| Model | Boiler capacity reported by the comparison | Temperature-management note |
|---|---|---|
| Rocket Appartamento 2.0 | 1.8 L | The comparison lists a temperature-control approach that differs from the other models; check its model-specific description. |
| Profitec Pro 500 PID | 2 L | PID is part of the model name; verify what it controls rather than assuming independent brew-water control. |
| Lelit Mara X V2 | 1.8 L | The comparison lists a distinct temperature-management approach; consult its model-specific description. |
| ECM Mechanika Slim PID | 2.2 L | PID is part of the model name; verify what it controls rather than assuming independent brew-water control. |
These capacities come from the comparison, not a standardized test. Confirm the precise model generation and regional specification before treating them as purchase facts. Comparison of HX espresso machines
