If you want to grow crops, raise animals, build relationships in town, explore caves, or play with friends, choose Stardew Valley. If you would rather assign workers, gather resources, build a medieval settlement, research upgrades, and expand a kingdom, choose Hearth and Hamlet. Despite their shared pixel-art look, they are different kinds of games: Stardew Valley is a farm-life RPG; Hearth and Hamlet is an incremental citybuilder.

What you do in Hearth and Hamlet
Hearth and Hamlet starts with a campfire and builds toward a kingdom. Its official Steam description centers on settlement management rather than a conventional farm-life routine.

Stardew Valley begins with an inherited farm and the chance to build a new life in the valley. Farming is only one part of its farm-life RPG structure; community, exploration, and other activities are also central to its official feature list.

Multiplayer and platform availability
If co-op matters, Stardew Valley is the choice supported by the cited official information. Its factsheet describes co-op for one to three invited players on supported platforms, excluding mobile, PlayStation Vita, and Tesla from that availability statement. Check the current platform store and official page for details that apply to your device.

The cited Hearth and Hamlet Steam listing specifies Windows and SteamOS/Linux system requirements and lists Steam Achievements and Family Sharing alongside single-player. It does not establish availability on the other platforms listed for Stardew Valley.

The reviewed Steam listing gives Hearth and Hamlet a release date of August 19, 2026. The Stardew Valley factsheet lists February 22, 2016, while its press page separately gives February 26, 2016 as the PC release. The useful broad distinction is that Stardew Valley released in 2016.
The Stardew Valley press page lists regular prices of USD $14.99, EUR €13,99, CAD $16.99, and GBP £10.99. Prices, promotions, and regional storefront listings can change; check the store where you plan to buy. Steam displayed a temporary October 8 promotion and a reduced USD price for Hearth and Hamlet at the time the cited listing was reviewed, so that snapshot is not a lasting price or a fair regional comparison.

For scale, ConcernedApe reported more than 41 million Stardew Valley copies sold across all platforms as of December 2024, including more than 26 million on PC and 7.9 million on Nintendo Switch, according to the official press page. The cited Hearth and Hamlet listing does not provide a comparable sales figure, so these numbers do not establish a head-to-head comparison.
Bottom line: choose by the loop, not the art style
Choose Stardew Valley if you specifically want farming, animals, a town and relationships, cave exploration, and co-op on supported platforms. Choose Hearth and Hamlet if settlement growth, worker assignments, resource management, policies, research, trade, and medieval kingdom-building sound more appealing. The evidence here is based on official listings and factsheets, not hands-on testing; no claim about comparative depth or overall quality follows from it.
