Heart-Rate-Monitoring Earbuds vs. Fitness Watches: Which Is Better for Workouts?

Neither heart-rate-monitoring earbuds nor fitness watches are a proven universal winner for workout heart-rate accuracy. Earbuds make sense if you already wear them and want to avoid a wrist device; a watch is a stronger fit if you want a wrist display, workout logging and broader watch features. Your choice should turn on fit, workout type, phone and app compatibility, and how you plan to use the readings—not the device category alone.

What each device can do during a workout

Heart-rate-monitoring earbuds use optical sensors in the earbud to measure heart rate during exercise. In Apple’s documented example, AirPods Pro 3 can provide workout heart-rate data through Fitness, Apple Fitness+ on supported Apple devices, or supported third-party workout apps on iPhone or iPad. You start the workout in the app, and the reading appears there. This is not a general feature of every pair of wireless earbuds.

A fitness watch measures heart rate at the wrist and can record and display workout information through the watch and its companion ecosystem. The exact features and phone compatibility depend on the watch model; do not assume all watches work the same way with every phone. A watch may be more convenient if you want to glance at workout information on your wrist, while earbuds can keep your wrist free.

Both approaches depend on optical sensor contact with the body. A snug watch fit helps maintain contact at the wrist. Earbud fit matters too: Apple says the correct ear tip fit is important for heart-rate sensing, and the tip that gives the best acoustic seal may not be the one that gives the best sensor contact.

How they compare for workouts

Decision point Heart-rate-monitoring earbuds Fitness watch
Wear and sensor contact Requires an earbud that fits securely and keeps the sensor in contact with the ear. Apple’s documented workout feature is for AirPods Pro 3. Requires the optical sensor to sit close against the wrist; a snug fit is advised during workouts.
Where workout data appears In a supported workout app on iPhone or iPad for the documented Apple feature. On the watch and through its companion ecosystem; a wrist display can be useful during activity.
Compatibility The documented AirPods Pro 3 workout feature relies on supported apps and Apple devices. Depends on watch model and ecosystem; compatibility is not uniform across watches and phones.
Factors that can disrupt a reading Contact and fit, cold, moisture, earwax, piercings and individual variation in skin blood flow can affect readings, according to Apple. Fit, motion, cold, skin perfusion and some tattoos can affect readings, according to Apple.
Movement pattern Optical measurement still depends on sensor contact and conditions; the available evidence does not establish that earbuds are more reliable for a particular sport. Apple says rhythmic activities such as running or cycling tend to give better results than irregular movements such as tennis or boxing.
Best fit for the reader You already want to wear earbuds and value not wearing a wrist device. You want a wrist display, workout logging or other watch functions.

Which is more accurate?

The evidence here does not show that current heart-rate-monitoring earbuds beat current fitness watches—or the reverse. Optical readings vary with the device, fit, activity, motion and individual factors. A 2024 review in Quality in Sport covered 29 peer-reviewed studies and more than 900 participants; it found that smartwatch accuracy varied by device, activity and individual factors. That review concerns wrist-worn monitors and does not directly compare today’s earbuds with today’s watches.

A separate American College of Cardiology (ACC) summary of a 2024 study by Quinn and colleagues describes a treadmill comparison with ECG involving 81 participants, 65% of them female and 25% of them with atrial fibrillation (AF). The study examined six older photoplethysmography-based wearable devices, including Jabra Sport pulse headphones. At peak exercise, the mean absolute difference from ECG was 13.8 beats per minute for participants in sinus rhythm and 28.7 beats per minute for participants with AF. Those are results for that study’s older devices and participants—not expected error rates for current earbuds or watches. The ACC summary reports meaningful differences from participants’ true heart rates, especially during exercise and among participants with AF; the study does not settle which current product category is more accurate.

The figures describe average absolute differences at peak exercise in that particular study, not a promise that every reading from every device will be off by the same amount. They also should not be used to forecast performance for a current model: the tested devices were older, and the study was not a head-to-head test of today’s heart-rate earbuds and fitness watches. Its sample included people with and without AF, and the ACC summary notes demographic limitations. That matters when interpreting the result: it is evidence that wearable readings can diverge from ECG under exercise conditions, not a shopping scorecard for the products on sale now.

For a workout, a reading that is sometimes absent or inconsistent can also be less useful than the theoretical performance of a sensor under ideal conditions. Check whether your device maintains contact during the movements you actually do, whether the app records the session as expected, and whether the trend is consistent enough for your purpose. Consumer workout readings are not a diagnosis or a substitute for clinical measurement.

Choose based on your routine and priorities

Choose heart-rate-monitoring earbuds if you already work out with earbuds

Their main practical advantage is that you may be able to track heart rate without adding a wrist device to your workout. This is useful only if the specific earbuds support workout heart-rate sensing, they fit well enough for reliable sensor contact, and your phone and workout app support the feature. For Apple’s documented AirPods Pro 3 setup, workout heart rate works through Fitness or supported third-party workout apps on iPhone or iPad. Third-party apps need permission to read heart-rate data and workout records.

Do not choose earbuds solely because you assume an ear sensor is inherently more accurate. The available sources do not establish that. If a workout app shows dashes or dimmed heart-rate data, Apple identifies poor fit or sensor contact as a possible issue. Recheck the fit and the app’s access to health and workout data rather than treating a blank reading as a valid measurement.

Before choosing this route, verify the precise model and app combination you plan to use. Apple’s setup instructions concern AirPods Pro 3, not earbuds generally. The feature also depends on starting a workout in a supported app on an iPhone or iPad. If you expect to see the number only on a wrist display, confirm that the phone-and-app workflow suits you instead; the documented AirPods workout data appears through supported apps.

Choose a fitness watch if you want information on your wrist

A watch is the more natural choice if you want to view workout data at a glance, record exercise on the watch, or use broader watch functions. Its usefulness still depends on the watch model, its phone compatibility and how its ecosystem handles workout records. For exercise, wear it snugly enough that the sensor stays close to the skin; a loose fit can undermine contact.

Movement style matters. Apple says rhythmic running or cycling tends to produce better wrist readings than irregular tennis or boxing movement. Garmin’s support guidance also notes inherent limitations in wrist optical heart-rate technology and advises selecting the activity profile that best matches the workout. The available Garmin guidance does not support more specific performance claims.

A watch’s on-wrist display and ability to record a workout may be the deciding benefits even if accuracy is not known to be superior. Conversely, if you already carry a compatible phone and prefer not to wear anything on your wrist, the watch’s display may not be worth the added device for your routine. Compare the features you will actually use rather than assuming that a longer feature list guarantees better heart-rate data.

Consider what you need the number for

If you mainly want a convenient estimate or to review workout trends, prioritize a device that fits comfortably and records consistently for your routine. If a particular heart-rate value has clinical significance, consumer optical data should not be treated as a diagnosis or as a replacement for clinical measurement. The ACC study’s ECG comparison is a reminder that wearable readings can differ meaningfully from ECG, particularly during exertion and for participants with AF.

There is no price comparison in the cited product guidance or studies, so the evidence cannot establish that earbuds or watches are the better value. Compare the current price of the specific products you are considering, but also account for what you already own: earbuds may make sense if you wanted them anyway, while a watch may make sense if you value its workout logging and broader functions. Do not treat a price difference as evidence of better sensor performance.

Set up the device for a more useful reading

For AirPods Pro 3 workout heart rate

  1. Confirm the setup is supported. Apple documents workout heart-rate sensing on AirPods Pro 3 through Fitness, Apple Fitness+ on supported Apple devices, or supported third-party workout apps on iPhone or iPad.
  2. Check the earbud contact. Try the ear tip that keeps the heart-rate sensor in proper contact. The best sensor-contact size can differ from the size that creates the best acoustic seal.
  3. Start the workout in the app. Heart-rate data appears through the supported workout app. For third-party apps, allow access to heart-rate data and workout records.
  4. Check missing or dimmed data. Apple says a poor reading may appear as dashes or dimmed data. Recheck fit and contact, and verify the app’s permissions.

Fit is not only a comfort question. A tip can sound sealed and still fail to give the sensor its preferred contact, or the tip that supports sensor contact may not be the one you would have chosen for sound. If you are troubleshooting, change one fit variable at a time and see whether the app continues to show data during your normal workout. Apple also identifies moisture, earwax, piercings, cold and variation in skin blood flow as factors that may affect AirPods Pro 3 readings, so a fit adjustment will not necessarily explain every interruption.

If you wear both Apple Watch and AirPods Pro 3, Apple says the system uses whichever source has the highest confidence at that moment. The displayed result therefore may not always come from the same sensor. This feature is Apple’s description of how its system selects a source; it is not independent proof that either sensor is more accurate overall.

For a wrist-based optical sensor

  1. Wear the watch snugly during exercise. Apple’s guidance is to keep it fitting snugly on top of the wrist so the sensor has close contact.
  2. Match the workout profile to the activity. Garmin advises choosing the activity profile that best matches the workout; Apple notes that rhythmic movement can be easier for wrist readings than irregular movement.
  3. Account for conditions and movement. Cold, reduced skin perfusion, some tattoos and motion can affect wrist readings. A watch that shifts during exercise may also lose close contact.
  4. Try a Bluetooth chest strap if readings remain inconsistent. Apple says a Bluetooth chest strap can be connected to Apple Watch. This is a documented fallback option, not proof that one sensor type is universally more accurate.

Apple’s advice is to wear the watch snugly on top of the wrist for the most accurate heart-rate measurement when using Workout. Contact is especially worth checking if the watch moves around during your session or if the reading changes when your activity becomes more irregular. The guidance does not promise that a tighter fit removes every source of variation: motion, cold, skin perfusion and some tattoos can still matter.

Common problems and what to check

  • Earbud data is missing, dimmed or shown as dashes: On the documented AirPods Pro 3 setup, check whether the earbuds fit so the sensor contacts the ear, whether the workout is running in a supported app, and whether a third-party app has permission to read heart-rate data and workout records.
  • Watch readings seem erratic during boxing or tennis: Irregular movement can make wrist optical readings less reliable than rhythmic running or cycling, according to Apple. Keep the watch snug and avoid treating a single erratic value as a dependable measurement.
  • Readings change in cold conditions: Apple lists cold and changes in skin blood flow among factors that can affect both wrist readings and AirPods Pro 3 readings. Consider whether conditions, rather than a device fault, explain the difference.
  • Readings vary between watch and earbuds: The two sensors may differ in contact, motion and moment-to-moment signal quality. When both AirPods Pro 3 and Apple Watch are used, Apple says the system selects the highest-confidence source at that moment; a difference does not by itself establish which reading is correct.
  • Consistent data matters more than convenience: If your optical readings remain inconsistent, Apple documents pairing a Bluetooth chest strap with Apple Watch as one option. Do not infer a universal ranking for all chest straps, watches or earbuds from that guidance.
  • The reading drops only in a particular sport: Consider the movement pattern before assuming the sensor has failed. Apple specifically contrasts rhythmic running and cycling with irregular tennis and boxing for wrist readings. Earbud performance in those sports is not established by the cited material, so do not assume switching to earbuds will solve the issue.
  • The number looks plausible but conflicts with how you feel: Do not use a consumer workout reading to diagnose a health concern or to overrule clinical advice. The ACC’s 2024 summary describes differences between wearable readings and ECG during treadmill exercise, with larger mean absolute differences in the AF group.

How to make the decision

  1. Check ecosystem compatibility first. Confirm that the exact device and workout app support the feature on your phone. The documented AirPods Pro 3 workout setup requires iPhone or iPad app support; watch compatibility depends on the model.
  2. Try the fit you can sustain. Earbuds need reliable sensor contact without slipping; a watch needs to stay snug against the wrist. Comfort during your normal session is part of whether the data will be usable.
  3. Think about your most common activity. If you mainly run or cycle rhythmically, Apple says wrist readings tend to work better than in irregular sports such as tennis or boxing. The evidence provided does not show that earbuds are the more accurate alternative for those sports.
  4. Decide where you want the information. Choose a watch if wrist display and workout logging matter most; choose compatible heart-rate earbuds if avoiding a wrist device is the priority.
  5. Set expectations for accuracy. Treat consumer optical heart rate as workout data, not clinical measurement. If your readings are persistently inconsistent, adjust fit or consider the documented chest-strap option for Apple Watch.
  6. Compare the actual setup, not just the sensor. Check the device price, phone and app requirements, where the workout record is stored, and whether you already own compatible gear. The cited evidence contains no current price data and cannot identify a least-expensive option or prove that a more expensive sensor is more accurate.

Frequently asked questions

Are heart-rate earbuds more accurate than fitness watches?

There is no evidence-backed universal winner. The 2024 Quality in Sport review found variation among wrist-worn monitors by device, activity and individual factors, but it did not compare current earbuds directly with current watches. Fit, motion and conditions can affect either optical sensor.

Can AirPods Pro 3 show workout heart rate without an Apple Watch?

Apple documents workout heart-rate sensing on AirPods Pro 3 through Fitness or supported third-party workout apps on iPhone or iPad, so the documented feature does not require wearing an Apple Watch. Third-party apps need permission to read heart-rate data and workout records.

Why do my AirPods Pro 3 show dashes or dimmed heart-rate data?

Apple says poor readings may appear as dashes or dimmed data. Check ear tip fit and sensor contact, confirm you started the workout in a supported app, and check third-party app permissions. Apple also lists factors such as cold, moisture, earwax, piercings and individual skin blood flow.

Do watches read heart rate better when running than when boxing?

Apple says rhythmic movements such as running or cycling tend to give better wrist readings than irregular movements such as tennis or boxing. That guidance is specific to wrist readings; the cited evidence does not establish that earbuds are more accurate for boxing or other irregular sports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if my watch’s heart-rate readings are inconsistent?

Check that it fits snugly and that the activity profile matches the workout. Cold, skin perfusion, tattoos and motion may affect readings. Apple says a Bluetooth chest strap can be connected to Apple Watch as an option if readings remain inconsistent; this does not establish a universal accuracy ranking across sensor types.

The Bottom Line

Choose the device that fits your workout and your routine—not a presumed accuracy winner. Heart-rate-monitoring earbuds can keep your wrist free if the model, fit and app work for you. A watch is a better match when you want a wrist display, workout logging or broader watch functions. Either way, optical readings can vary with fit, motion and conditions; treat them as workout data, not clinical measurement. If Apple Watch readings remain inconsistent, a Bluetooth chest strap is one documented option.
