Choose snacks made from ordinary fruits, vegetables, protein foods, dairy without added sugars, healthy fats and whole grains—and prepare each one to match your child’s eating skills. The CDC says infants and young children should not have added sugars, so check both the Nutrition Facts label and ingredient list on packaged foods. Plain yogurt, soft fruit, cooked vegetables and age-appropriate combinations can replace cookies, candy and sweetened snacks.

What to offer instead of sugary snacks

Build variety across the day rather than treating every snack as a required mini-meal. For a toddler, a protein food paired with a fruit or vegetable and a grain or starchy vegetable can make a satisfying combination; balance can vary from snack to snack. The CDC recommends a mix of vegetables, fruits, protein foods, dairy without added sugars, healthy fats and whole grains. CDC guidance on foods to encourage includes options across these groups.

  • Fruit: Soft ripe banana or avocado, prepared in a shape and texture your child can manage.
  • Vegetables: Cooked, soft carrot, peas or sweet potato. Hard raw vegetables need preparation appropriate to the child’s skills.
  • Dairy: Plain, unsweetened yogurt with soft fruit, or pasteurized cheese with suitable fruit pieces.
  • Grains: Whole-grain bread or crackers with a suitable accompaniment, such as cottage cheese. Choose pieces that are not hard or difficult to chew.
  • Protein foods: Soft egg, tofu or appropriately prepared meat, depending on the child’s diet and allergy guidance.

Practical toddler combinations from HealthyChildren.org’s toddler feeding guidance include plain low-fat yogurt with sliced strawberries, banana, avocado, cheese with diced apples, and whole-grain crackers with cottage cheese. Adapt pieces and textures to the individual child rather than serving them automatically as written.

How to choose packaged snacks without added sugars

“Fruit,” “yogurt” or “whole grain” on the front of a package does not by itself tell you whether a product contains added sugars. Check the Nutrition Facts label and ingredient list. The CDC specifically names flavored yogurt, muffins and cookies as examples of foods that can contain added sugars. Plain yogurt without added sugars is one option; sweeten its flavor with soft fruit rather than choosing a sugary variety.

Favor whole fruit over juice. Children younger than 12 months should not drink fruit or vegetable juice, according to the CDC. For babies and toddlers, fruit in a suitable texture also makes a more direct snack choice than a sweet drink.

When babies can have yogurt and other solid foods

Complementary foods generally begin around 6 months, when a baby is developmentally ready. Early foods may need to be soft and mashed; texture can progress as feeding skills develop. If you are unsure whether your baby is ready or how to introduce a food, ask the child’s healthcare professional.

Plain yogurt without added sugars may be introduced before 12 months. Cow’s milk as a drink is not recommended until after 12 months; that age distinction does not mean plain yogurt must wait until then. Choose pasteurized dairy foods. Do not give honey to babies younger than 12 months because of botulism risk, and avoid unpasteurized foods. See the CDC guide to introducing solid foods for age and food guidance.

Prepare snacks to reduce choking risk

There is no single preparation that makes every food appropriate for every child. Shape, size and texture should match the child’s development and eating skills. The CDC identifies whole grapes, uncut cherry tomatoes, hard raw apple or carrot pieces, whole nuts and seeds, spoonfuls or chunks of nut butter, popcorn, chips, pretzels and chewy fruit snacks as potential choking hazards. The CDC choking hazards guidance explains the need to adapt foods and supervise children while they eat.
