Health Monitoring API Polling Rate Limits and Retries: A Backoff Runbook

There is no universal polling interval or request quota for health monitoring APIs. Set polling frequency from the specific API’s documented limits and data freshness, honor Retry-After when returned, and use bounded backoff with jitter for eligible transient failures. Stop retrying when the operation is unsafe to repeat or the job’s retry budget expires.

How often should you poll a health monitoring API?

Use the API’s contract—not an HTTP-wide rule—to choose an interval. Record the quota, what it applies to (such as a user, project, key, endpoint, or another bucket), how it resets, and any freshness or sampling constraints. HTTP defines no general polling interval, and servers choose how they count requests and identify callers. See RFC 6585.

Poll no more often than the data’s useful freshness requires. Spread recurring jobs across the allowed window rather than starting them all at once, and coordinate workers with a shared client-side limiter when they consume the same quota. If the endpoint supports them, conditional requests, pagination, rollups, or batching may reduce traffic; confirm the feature in that endpoint’s documentation.

Published limits are service-specific and may change. For example, the Google Health API page checked in 2026 lists defaults of 86.4 million requests per day per project, 120,000 requests per minute per project, and 300 requests per minute per user. Those figures apply to that service, not to health APIs generally: Google Health API quotas.

What to do when a request fails

429 Too Many Requests

A 429 signals that the server considers the caller to have sent too many requests in a period. It does not, by itself, tell you the quota scope, exact limit, or reset time. Pause and inspect the API’s quota documentation and response headers. If the response includes Retry-After, do not retry before the stated time. RFC 6585 permits the header but leaves the server’s request-counting policy unspecified: RFC 6585.

503 and other documented transient failures

A 503 indicates temporary unavailability, potentially due to overload or maintenance. The server may include Retry-After; follow it when present. For other failures, use the provider’s documented retry guidance rather than assuming every error is temporary. See RFC 9110.

Authentication, permission, validation, and not-found errors

Repeating an identical request usually will not fix an invalid argument, missing permission, authentication problem, or absent resource. Consult the endpoint’s error contract, correct the request or credentials, or surface the error. Google Cloud Monitoring distinguishes these categories from quota and transient backend failures in its Monitoring API troubleshooting guidance.

Most importantly: if a sensor is installed backward, simply flip the reading in the App with one tap—no need to rewire or reopen the live breaker box.

Persistent 429s or exhausted quotas

More retries are not always the answer. A time-based limit may clear after its reset window; an exhausted volume quota may not. Reduce polling frequency or concurrency, queue work, or batch requests if supported. Request a quota adjustment only when the workload legitimately requires it. Google Cloud Monitoring warns that retrying is not useful for some exhausted volume quotas: Monitoring API troubleshooting guidance.

How to use Retry-After and backoff

Honor the server’s wait

Under RFC 9110, Retry-After can contain either an HTTP date or a delay in seconds. Treat it as the earliest time for a follow-up request; do not send an immediate retry. If the indicated wait extends beyond the caller’s deadline, defer the work or return a bounded failure instead of retrying early. See RFC 9110.

Use bounded exponential backoff with jitter when no specific wait is given

For eligible retryable failures without a more specific provider instruction, increase the delay exponentially, add randomness to keep clients from retrying in lockstep, cap the delay, and enforce an attempt or elapsed-time limit. A sequence such as 1, 2, 4, and 8 seconds plus a small random component illustrates the shape of a policy, not a universal setting. Choose values to fit the API contract and the job’s latency needs.

Provider examples are not protocol defaults. Google Cloud Monitoring documents a 1-to-32-second example for particular transient errors. Google Cloud Healthcare gives 32- or 64-second typical maximum-backoff examples. Use those only where their guidance matches the API and failure being handled: Cloud Monitoring and Cloud Healthcare API best practices.

Persist waits for durable work

For work that must survive process restarts or be handled across multiple processes, store retry state rather than relying on an in-memory sleep. Google Cloud Healthcare recommends persistent retry queues for longer-term or multi-process handling: Cloud Healthcare API best practices.

Make retry safety explicit

A poll implemented as a GET is generally safe to repeat because it retrieves a representation. That does not make writes safe to retry. Repeating a state-changing request after a timeout can duplicate an effect if the first attempt succeeded but its response was lost.

RFC 9110 advises against automatically retrying a non-idempotent operation unless the client knows it is idempotent or can establish that the original request was not applied. For writes, use the API’s documented idempotency key or deduplication mechanism where available; otherwise reconcile the resulting state before retrying an ambiguous request. See RFC 9110.

Set a retry budget and escalation path

Define both a maximum number of attempts and a total elapsed-time deadline that fit the job. When either limit is reached, stop retrying, record the failure, and surface it or send it to a controlled queue. Include the endpoint, status, request correlation ID, quota-related headers, attempt count, and elapsed time so an operator can distinguish a bad request from a quota issue or sustained outage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google Cloud Monitoring recommends stopping after a configured attempt count or reasonable elapsed time, and NHS England Digital likewise advises against retrying indefinitely. Follow the API’s own retry guidance where available; otherwise set limits appropriate to the use case: Google Cloud Monitoring and NHS England Digital RESTful API guidance.
