Health Insurance FAQ: Renewals, Portability, Claims and Policy Changes in India

In India, renewing a health policy generally protects continuity, and an insurer generally cannot refuse renewal simply because you made a claim. A grace period may preserve continuity credits, but it does not necessarily provide cover during the unpaid gap. At renewal, you can apply to transfer eligible credits to another insurer; acceptance is not automatic. Claim timelines and policy changes depend on the applicable IRDAI rules and your policy terms.

This guide explains the Indian regulatory framework using IRDAI health-insurance policyholder material reviewed on October 11, 2026. The year of publication is not stated for the IRDAI FAQ timelines discussed below. For a particular case, check the latest IRDAI material and your policy schedule and wording.

What should I check first when renewing health insurance?

Start with the renewal date, premium due date, installment frequency, sum insured and current policy wording. Renewal is not just a payment task: it is the point to check whether the cover still fits, whether the premium and terms have changed, and whether you want to stay with the insurer or apply to move your policy.

  • Check the policy schedule for the due date, members covered, sum insured, premium, deductible and co-payment.
  • Review the wording for exclusions, sublimits, waiting periods and renewal terms rather than relying only on a summary or sales description.
  • If considering another insurer, begin the portability process early enough to allow for assessment and a decision before renewal.
  • Keep proof of premium payment and renewal confirmation, and verify that the renewed schedule reflects the terms you expect.

IRDAI says an insurer generally cannot refuse renewal merely because the insured made a claim in the preceding policy year. The stated exception is a benefit-based policy whose terms say the contract ends after payment of the covered benefit; a critical illness policy may be structured this way. That exception depends on the policy terms and should not be generalized to all health insurance.

IRDAI’s FAQ on Health Insurance Regulations also says an insurer must not require fresh underwriting, a new proposal form or a medical examination at renewal when the sum insured offered has not changed. This rule should not be stretched to a requested increase in cover or a move to a different product: those are different circumstances and the applicable terms matter.

What is the grace period for health insurance renewal?

The grace period is the time immediately after the premium due date during which payment may preserve continuity benefits, such as progress through waiting periods. IRDAI’s health department FAQ gives these periods according to how often premiums are paid:

Premium installment frequency Grace period stated by IRDAI
Monthly 15 days
Quarterly, half-yearly or annual 30 days

The figures are from IRDAI’s health department FAQ; the year of the accessed FAQ is not stated. The key distinction is between continuity credits and active cover. Renewal within the grace period can preserve continuity benefits, but the policyholder does not have coverage for a period for which the insurer has received no premium. Whether cover continues during a payment gap can depend on the installment arrangement and policy terms; do not assume that the grace period itself makes every claim during the gap payable.

If you have missed a due date, contact the insurer promptly to confirm the amount and payment method, whether the policy can still be renewed, the effective date of cover and which continuity benefits will be retained. Save the insurer’s confirmation. If payment falls outside the applicable grace period, ask the insurer what options remain rather than assuming the policy can be reinstated on the old terms.

Can I port my health insurance policy?

Yes. Portability is the process of moving eligible continuity credits from one insurer to another at renewal. IRDAI says portability is available for individual, family-floater and group health policies. It is an application to the acquiring insurer, not an automatic transfer or a guarantee that the new insurer will accept you.

When to apply

IRDAI’s health department FAQ describes the usual application window as at least 30 days before renewal and no earlier than 60 days before renewal. It also says an insurer may consider a late application within 15 days of renewal if it can ensure there is no break in cover. These are IRDAI-stated timing provisions, not a reason to wait: applying in the usual window gives the acquiring insurer time to assess the application and communicate its decision.

How the transfer process works

  1. Choose a prospective policy and compare its documents. Review the proposed schedule and wording against your existing policy, including cover, waiting periods, exclusions, sublimits, deductibles, co-payments, premium and renewal terms.
  2. Apply to the acquiring insurer. Submit the portability request within the usual window and provide the requested policy details. Ask the insurer to confirm receipt and explain any additional information it needs.
  3. Allow the insurers to exchange records. The acquiring insurer obtains policy and claim information through the Insurance Information Bureau of India portal. IRDAI’s FAQ gives the existing insurer 72 hours to provide the information.
  4. Wait for the acquiring insurer’s decision. IRDAI’s FAQ states a five-day decision period after the acquiring insurer receives the information. A decision timeline is not an acceptance guarantee.
  5. Confirm acceptance and effective terms before switching. Check the decision, premium, sum insured, continuity credits and start date in writing. Do not cancel or let the existing cover lapse on the assumption that the application will be accepted.

The 72-hour and five-day timings are stated in IRDAI’s health department FAQ; the year of that accessed material is not stated. In practice, keep track of when the application and records are received, since the five-day decision period is tied to the acquiring insurer’s receipt of the information.

Which credits may transfer?

For indemnity policies, IRDAI identifies potential continuity credits including the sum insured, no-claim bonus, specific waiting periods, the pre-existing-disease waiting period and the moratorium period, subject to the prior cover and applicable regulatory rules. A transferred credit does not make two policies identical. Exclusions, sublimits, deductible and co-payment terms, claim servicing and other wording may differ.

If you request a higher sum insured, waiting-period treatment may apply to the additional amount. Do not assume that a credit earned on the existing cover removes waiting periods for the increased portion. Ask the acquiring insurer to state in writing how it will treat the old cover and any increase.

How is portability different from migration?

Portability moves eligible credits to another insurer. Migration moves them to another policy with the same insurer. IRDAI defines migration as a facility for policyholders, including members under family cover and group insurance policies, to transfer credits gained from a previous health policy to another policy with the same insurer.

Question Portability Migration
Where does the policy move? To another insurer To another policy with the same insurer
When to consider it When seeking cover from a different insurer, generally at renewal When seeking a different policy from the current insurer
What happens to credits? Eligible continuity credits may transfer, subject to applicable rules and assessment Credits may transfer under the same-insurer facility and applicable terms
Is acceptance or identical wording assured? No; the acquiring insurer assesses the application, and policy terms can differ Check the new policy wording and schedule; a credit transfer does not make all terms identical

Whether you port or migrate, compare the actual documents rather than just the product names or headline sum insured. In particular, check whether the new policy changes exclusions, sublimits, premium, renewal terms or your share of a claim through a deductible or co-payment.

Claim stage IRDAI-stated timeline Trigger
Pre-authorization decision Within one hour Pre-authorization request
Final authorization Within three hours Receipt of the discharge authorization request
Settlement of a non-cashless claim Within 15 days Claim settlement process for a non-cashless claim

These are timelines listed by IRDAI, not a promise that every claim will be approved or that a decision will be in your favour. The year of the accessed FAQ is not stated. An authorization is not the same as a final determination of every expense: claims are assessed under the policy contract and applicable regulations. Keep the request or submission record, note when the relevant documents were received, and follow up with the insurer if the stated service timeline has passed.

What if I have more than one indemnity policy?

For multiple indemnity-based policies, IRDAI’s regulation FAQ says the policyholder can choose a policy for settlement and may seek a balance from another policy under that policy’s terms. If the payable amount exceeds one policy’s sum insured after applying a deductible or co-payment, the policyholder can choose an insurer for the balance. This does not mean duplicate policies automatically reimburse the same expense in full twice. Read each policy’s terms and coordinate claim information with the insurers.

What does the 60-month moratorium mean?

IRDAI says that after 60 continuous months of coverage, including periods carried through portability and migration, a policy and claim cannot be contested for non-disclosure or misrepresentation except on grounds of established fraud. If the sum insured is enhanced, the 60-month period applies from the date of enhancement to the enhanced amount.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The moratorium is a specific protection against contesting a policy or claim on those grounds after the required period; it is not a blanket promise that every claim will be paid. Policy terms, the facts of the claim and the stated fraud exception remain relevant. Keep evidence of continuous cover and any enhancement so you can establish the relevant dates if there is a dispute.

Can I change details or covered members during a policy term?

Some changes are handled through the insurer’s servicing process, but the official IRDAI material does not establish one universal process or document list for changing an address, contact details, covered members or sum insured. Contact the insurer and follow the servicing instructions for your policy. Ask which form or documents are needed, whether the change can take effect mid-term and when it will appear on the schedule.

Nomination is specifically identified by IRDAI as something a policyholder can change during the policy term. For other changes, do not assume that an informal request has amended the contract: retain the insurer’s written confirmation and check the updated schedule or endorsement. Where a proposed change affects cover, eligibility or the sum insured, ask the insurer to explain its treatment under the applicable policy and rules; a uniform outcome cannot be inferred for every policy.

How should I compare renewal, porting or migration options?

Compare the documents side by side before deciding. A lower premium or a larger headline sum insured does not by itself establish that a policy offers better protection. Use this checklist:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Sum insured and bonus: Confirm the base cover and how any no-claim bonus is shown and treated.
  • Continuity credits: Check the remaining waiting periods, pre-existing-disease waiting-period progress and any applicable moratorium credit, including how an increase in cover is treated.
  • Exclusions and sublimits: Read the wording for what is excluded or capped; these terms can differ even where continuity credits transfer.
  • Deductible and co-payment: Identify what amount or share you may have to pay yourself under the policy.
  • Claims and authorization: Compare the insurer’s claim-servicing and authorization arrangements and the instructions for submitting a claim.
  • Price and renewal terms: Check the premium quoted for the policy and the stated terms that apply at renewal.
  • Acceptance and effective date: For portability, verify the acquiring insurer’s decision and the confirmed start date before relying on the new cover.

Use the policy schedule and full wording for product-level differences. If a point is unclear, ask the insurer for a written explanation tied to the policy provision rather than relying on a general statement about the product.
