Its useful comparison points are format, era, platform, playable roster and local multiplayer. On the information available before launch, it is not possible to name an overall winner against older He-Man games: Dragon Pearl has not yet been independently reviewed or tested, while the historical titles belong to very different hardware and design eras.

That snapshot explains why a direct, score-based ranking would be misleading. Dragon Pearl’s advertised structure is recognizable to anyone seeking a modern side-scrolling beat-’em-up, whereas the older games were built around flight sequences, portable action or other formats.

When does the He-Man game come out?
Nintendo’s US store currently lists February 4, 2027 for Dragon Pearl of Destruction. Treat that as the latest listed date, not an unconditional guarantee: release information has shifted, and storefront information can be revised. Steam has not supplied a competing day and month; it continues to show the PC version as “Coming soon.”

How the date changed
The announcement in 2025 described a console and PC release, physical pre-orders and a digital launch planned for early 2026. That was an announcement-era plan, not evidence that a copy was available for purchase. A report dated August 25, 2026 said the game had moved from summer 2026 to an early-2027 window after the Pixel Arcadia Showcase on August 24. That report did not give a specific day. Nintendo’s later store listing supplied the February 4, 2027 date.
If you are planning a purchase around launch, check the relevant regional storefront close to release. The date above is specifically the current US Nintendo listing; other regions, platforms or editions can display different information.
What Dragon Pearl of Destruction is designed to be
A modern 2D brawler rather than a retro reissue
The available descriptions frame Dragon Pearl as an original game using retro visual language and arcade-brawler structure. That means the comparison with an 8-bit or 16-bit He-Man title should focus on design goals, not on whether it reproduces the older game exactly. The announcement called it a console and PC 2D brawler developed with Bitmap Bureau. Steam uses the more specific phrase “fast-paced magic-brawler.”
Mattel’s Erika Winterholler described the project as “a love letter to those who grew up with He-Man, combining nostalgic visuals with fast-paced, modern gameplay.” That is promotional positioning, not a review or an independent assessment of how the finished game plays.
Characters and abilities
Nintendo lists He-Man, Teela, Man-At-Arms and She-Ra, with character-specific moves and abilities. Steam also lists He-Man, Man-At-Arms and Teela, and says She-Ra can be unlocked. The wording implies that the roster is not simply four characters available from the opening screen: She-Ra’s availability may depend on progression or a later playthrough. Neither storefront provides a complete move list, balance breakdown or explanation of how each character changes the campaign.

The character selection gives the game a broader cooperative identity than a single-hero adaptation. He-Man supplies the obvious frontline presence, while Teela, Man-At-Arms and She-Ra indicate that the developers are treating Eternia’s heroes as distinct playable archetypes rather than cosmetic swaps. Until the game is released, however, claims about damage, speed, difficulty or the relative strength of those characters would be speculation.
Levels, power-ups and Battle Cat
Nintendo advertises power-ups, Battle Cat and “over 13 action-packed levels.” Steam’s description instead says “12 Action-Packed Stages.” Both figures should be attributed to their storefronts; there is no reliable basis for converting them into one precise count. The difference could reflect a change during development, different counting conventions or storefront copy updated at different times.

Battle Cat is specifically named in both the Nintendo and Steam descriptions. The listings establish its presence, but not whether it is a controllable mount, a temporary assist, a set-piece element or a combination of those roles. Likewise, “power-ups” confirms that temporary enhancements are part of the advertised structure without revealing their effects, duration or frequency.
Local multiplayer and platforms
Nintendo lists one-to-two players on one system, and Steam lists local two-player co-op. The confirmed multiplayer mode is therefore same-system local cooperation, not an advertised online service. If online play, matchmaking or cross-platform progression matters to you, do not assume it exists from the phrase “two-player.” The current descriptions do not establish any of those features.
Nintendo’s listed edition is digital for Switch. Steam identifies a PC version but gives no launch date beyond “Coming soon.” The 2025 announcement planned physical pre-orders as well as digital distribution, yet that announcement does not prove that a physical edition is currently in stock or that every platform will receive one.

How it differs from the 1983 The Power of He-Man
The clearest documented contrast is with Mattel’s The Power of He-Man from 1983. That game appeared on Intellivision and Atari 2600, systems designed around an entirely different technical and control environment from a contemporary Switch or PC brawler.

Historical descriptions divide The Power of He-Man into a Wind Raider flight toward Skeletor and ground action that continues toward Castle Grayskull. Its defining idea is therefore a two-phase adventure: first an aerial sequence, then on-foot action. Dragon Pearl is advertised as a 2D brawler with character-specific attacks, power-ups and cooperative play. The two games share characters and setting, but their moment-to-moment structures are not equivalent.
That difference matters when interpreting nostalgia. Someone who remembers piloting the Wind Raider is remembering a game built around alternating vehicle and ground sections, not an earlier version of Dragon Pearl’s side-scrolling combat. Conversely, a player seeking a contemporary beat-’em-up should not expect the 1983 game to supply a comparable roster, local co-op format or presentation.
Hardware changes the comparison
The Intellivision and Atari 2600 versions belong to the early home-console period, when a licensed game had to work within severe limits on graphics, memory and input. Dragon Pearl’s advertised character abilities and multiple heroes presume a much richer design space. It is reasonable to compare the games’ use of He-Man mythology; it is not reasonable to treat their visual detail, controls or campaign breadth as if they were measured on the same scale.

He-Man: Power of Grayskull (2002)
He-Man: Power of Grayskull is identified as a Game Boy Advance title. If you want a local co-op beat-’em-up
Dragon Pearl is the only title in this comparison whose current description explicitly centers on same-system two-player cooperation. Nintendo lists one-to-two players, while Steam specifies local two-player co-op. That makes it the natural fit for a pair of players who want to share a screen and use different He-Man characters. Remember that this is an advertised feature, not a hands-on judgment about matchmaking, difficulty scaling or control quality.
If you want early-console history
The Power of He-Man offers the more historically revealing choice. Its Wind Raider-to-ground progression shows how the license was adapted to early home hardware and how a game could divide its action into two distinct phases. It is valuable as a period piece even though it cannot match Dragon Pearl’s advertised roster, effects or cooperative structure.

If you prefer portable He-Man games
Power of Grayskull’s Game Boy Advance identity makes it the relevant historical reference among the named games. The available evidence does not justify claims about its quality or exact mechanics, but its portable hardware separates it clearly from Dragon Pearl’s Switch and PC presentation.
If you are choosing based on a specific character
Dragon Pearl has the strongest confirmed roster information: He-Man, Teela and Man-At-Arms are listed, and She-Ra is identified as unlockable by Steam.
