Awear’s proposed Agentic System One (AS-One) would let eyewear makers offer an AI assistant, connected services and a portable encrypted memory vault. The idea is not yet a shipping product: Awear has not disclosed pricing, funding, partners, release dates or a complete memory-transfer specification.
Who is Ash Saulsbury?
Saulsbury led Meta’s wearable-reality products from 2017 to 2019. Before that, he spent seven years as an Apple systems architect. He later became Microsoft’s vice president of architecture for mixed reality. That background gives him experience on both sides of the platform problem: building consumer hardware experiences and designing the underlying systems that connect devices, software and services.

His new company, Awear AI, is aimed at the layer beneath an eyewear brand’s user interface. Rather than producing one branded pair of glasses, Awear is positioning AS-One as infrastructure that multiple eyewear makers could adopt.
What Awear AI’s AS-One system is intended to provide
Awear describes AS-One as a package for eyewear manufacturers, combining several pieces that are often controlled by a single technology company:
#1 Best Overall
- #1 SELLING AI GLASSES* – Tap into iconic style and advanced technology with Ray-Ban Meta, the #1 selling AI glasses*. Capture photos and videos, listen to music, make hands-free calls or ask Meta AI questions on the go. *Based on IDC historical sales data up to Q3’25, released December 2025.

- LENS OPTIONS – Choose from a wide range of lenses for men and women designed to match your style with options ranging from fully tinted sunglasses, fully clear, blue light or Transitions lenses. Experience ultimate adaptability with Transitions lenses on Ray-Ban Meta. Enjoy continuous visual performance in changing light environments, with lenses that darken with sunlight and fade to clear indoors, you'll be ready for whatever your day brings.
- Underlying software and connected services for running an AI agent on smart glasses.
- Adaptable hardware designs that manufacturers can configure for different frames and product experiences.
- Encrypted agent communications between the glasses, services and the user’s data.
- A memory vault intended to preserve personal context across devices and brands.
The differentiator is portability. If a user changes eyewear ecosystems, the goal is to move the assistant’s accumulated context rather than start over with an empty profile. That context could include information the agent has learned from a user’s interactions, but Awear has not published a full schema defining exactly what is stored, how it is organized or how a receiving system would import it.
How portable personal AI memory could work
A user-controlled memory vault
AS-One’s proposed vault would separate personal context from the glasses manufacturer’s brand layer. The user, rather than the eyewear company, would be able to see what the assistant knows and decide where that information goes. Saulsbury says, “The agents you use should work for you, not for somebody else. Even if you decide to leave, you can take all that information with you and move it somewhere else. You will always have visibility into what the agentic system knows about you.”

Encryption that the platform operator cannot quietly reuse
Awear says users would control their encryption keys and that stored information would be encrypted. Saulsbury frames the distinction this way: “You’ll see many companies go to enormous lengths to make it extremely difficult for their competitors to access your data. We make it extremely difficult for anyone, including ourselves, to access your data.” The practical test will be whether users can independently recover, export and revoke access to their data without relying on Awear’s continued cooperation.

An export format another assistant can accept
Portability only matters if another service can actually import the memory. Awear has not published a complete transfer specification, and the report did not identify a competing service that can accept a complete AI memory. Until both sides support a common format, “export” could mean little more than downloading an archive that no other assistant understands.

Lila Tretikov, who is working with Saulsbury, compares the intended model with Wikipedia’s licensing and structure: users can take the content elsewhere because the system is designed to be copied. “Easier to copy? Partly. Good. If competitors adopt our export format, users win and the standard spreads. We win. Trust is the standard.”
Why this matters in a concentrated smart-glasses market
Counterpoint Research, quoted by Fast Company on October 15, 2026, estimated that Meta accounted for approximately 84% of global smart-glasses shipments in the first half of 2026. A share that large gives the leading ecosystem substantial influence over hardware, software, cloud accounts and the personal data generated through everyday use.

Awear’s argument is that an assistant should be portable in the same way a user’s documents or contacts are portable. A person could change frames, manufacturer or cloud provider without discarding years of preferences and context. That would make the assistant a user-controlled service instead of an asset that increases the cost of leaving one platform.

Tretikov describes the separation of responsibilities with another analogy: “Think of it much like the relationship between your doctor and your insurance agent. They have different responsibilities, and that does not mean they should automatically share everything they know about you.” In an eyewear system, that principle would mean the company operating the glasses, the company operating an AI model and the company storing personal memory need not receive identical data.

Privacy protections for people near the glasses
Smart glasses create a privacy problem beyond the wearer: microphones and cameras can collect information about bystanders who never agreed to use the assistant. Awear’s proposed safeguards include:
- Direct user authorization before an agent makes a purchase.
- User-controlled encryption keys and encrypted storage.
- Consent controls for interactions involving other people.
- Wake-word and voice-recognition gating.
- Indicators showing inward-facing and outward-facing listening activity.
Saulsbury also says purchases should remain reversible: “We don’t allow the AI agent to make a purchase without your direct authorization.” He says users should have a way to recover even if they later change their mind or forget that a purchase was made.
Jan Eißfeldt, describing the proposed runtime protections, says the microphone would need to be very close to a private conversation, the system would need to recognize the voices and valid consent, and a keyword spotter would keep the assistant inactive until its name is spoken. Those are design claims, not independently demonstrated performance. The report contains no audit or product demonstration showing how often unwanted recording is prevented, how consent is logged or how the indicators behave in crowded environments.

What to check before trusting a portable AI assistant
- Demand a readable export. The provider should document which memories, settings, permissions and interaction history can be exported, in a format another assistant can import.
- Verify key custody. Find out who generates, stores, backs up and can revoke encryption keys, and whether the operator can decrypt the vault without the user.
- Separate the operators. Check whether the eyewear brand, cloud host and AI-model provider have distinct permissions rather than one company receiving the entire record.
- Test model and location flexibility. A genuinely portable system should explain whether users can choose another model or move their data to a different geographic service region.
- Inspect purchase controls. Authorization should be explicit, logged and reversible, with a recovery path for accidental or disputed transactions.
- Look for bystander evidence. Listening indicators, wake-word behavior and consent recognition should be demonstrated under realistic conditions and examined by independent auditors.
- Ask how migration works in practice. A useful launch should show a user leaving one brand, importing the vault into another and retaining visibility into what transferred.
The decision facing the smart-glasses industry
Awear is trying to make trust and exit rights part of the platform itself. If multiple manufacturers adopt the same memory format and runtime protections, users could switch hardware without surrendering an assistant’s accumulated context. If no other service accepts the data, the vault remains a promise rather than an escape route.
The stakes extend beyond convenience. Portable memory could reduce the pressure to remain with the dominant glasses ecosystem, while user-held keys and explicit consent could limit how much personal and bystander information any single operator controls. For now, however, AS-One is an announced architecture with important commercial and technical details still to be revealed.
