HDR Video Streaming in Windows 11: Enable, Verify, and Fix Playback

To enable HDR video streaming, open Start > Settings > System > Display, select the display you will watch on, choose HDR, and check Display capabilities. If HDR video streaming is marked Supported, turn on the HDR video streaming checkbox under the HDR controls. If it is not supported, a Windows toggle cannot add the missing capability; the display, graphics hardware, connection, codecs, app, and power settings must all be suitable.

Use the selected display deliberately when more than one screen is connected. Windows evaluates HDR capability per display, so a laptop panel, television, and monitor can show different results. The labels can vary slightly with Windows 11 updates and device configuration.

Turn on HDR video streaming in Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Display.
  2. When multiple displays are connected, click the screen on which you intend to watch the video.
  3. Select HDR in the display settings.
  4. Under Display capabilities, find HDR video streaming. Microsoft documents this page and capability check in its Stream HDR video on Windows guidance.
  5. If the status is Supported, enable HDR video streaming in the HDR section. On an HDR-capable device, Microsoft describes this as selecting the checkbox below the main HDR control.
  6. Open the supported video app and start playback on that same display. If you moved the app or video from another screen, stop and restart playback so the service can negotiate the new display’s capabilities.

A supported status and an enabled checkbox are necessary, not a guarantee that every title will stream in HDR. The application, provider, subscription, content version, protected-media path, codecs, graphics hardware, and display connection can each limit the result.

What the capability check actually tells you

The HDR video streaming entry describes whether Windows can use the selected display for HDR video through the supported Windows playback path. It does not certify every app or streaming service, and it does not convert standard-dynamic-range (SDR) video into genuine HDR. A title mastered and delivered as SDR remains SDR even when the display’s HDR switch is enabled.

If the entry says Not supported, Windows cannot create that capability with software alone. Confirm the exact PC model, display model, graphics specification, and connection requirements with their manufacturers. Do not infer support from a connector’s shape or from a generic “HDR” label on a product box.

Hardware and connection requirements

Microsoft’s Windows HDR guidance separates built-in-display recommendations from external-display requirements. Treat the figures below as documented thresholds or recommendations, not a guarantee that every app will use HDR.

Area Microsoft guidance How to apply it
Built-in screen At least 1080p resolution; 300 nits or more maximum brightness is recommended. Check the laptop or all-in-one’s exact panel specification. A panel can meet the resolution recommendation yet still fail the HDR capability check.
External display HDR10 support, with DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0 or higher, USB-C, or Thunderbolt listed as possible interfaces. Verify that both the computer output and the monitor or television input support the required standard. A compliant-looking port is not proof of the full signal capability.
Protected HDR playback Graphics hardware with PlayReady hardware DRM and codecs capable of 10-bit video decoding. Use the PC and GPU manufacturer’s specifications, then confirm the app’s requirements.
Codec examples HEVC, VP9, and AV1 are identified in Microsoft’s codec guidance. HEVC is specifically associated with Netflix HDR requirements; VP9 is used for YouTube HDR; AV1 may be available as a codec extension. A codec or subscription that works for one provider does not guarantee HDR elsewhere.

See Microsoft’s explanation of HDR in Windows for these requirements, codec notes, and certification guidance. For protected services, the provider may impose additional account, plan, app, or regional requirements; check the service’s own current support page.

Why codecs, DRM, and subscriptions matter

Streaming HDR is a chain rather than a single switch. Protected playback may require PlayReady hardware DRM, a graphics path capable of decoding 10-bit video, and the codec used by the service. Microsoft specifically associates HEVC with Netflix HDR and notes that Netflix HDR requires a premium subscription; VP9 is used for YouTube HDR, while AV1 can be installed as a codec extension when supported. These examples are provider-specific. Installing one codec, changing a subscription, or using a different browser cannot guarantee HDR for every service.

Use the provider’s current Windows app or browser requirements, sign in with the plan that includes HDR when applicable, and test a title explicitly labeled HDR. If only some titles show HDR, that can be normal: catalog versions, regional rights, and mastering differ.

Check certification without misreading it

Within the Windows HDR settings, Advanced display can show HDR certification information. If it displays Not found, Microsoft says the display may lack HDR certification or the manufacturer may not have published certification information. That label alone does not prove that the panel is unable to show HDR.

Certification is useful evidence when comparing displays. Microsoft identifies DisplayHDR certification tiers and calls out DisplayHDR 500 or higher in its guidance; a higher tier represents a higher certification level. Still verify the exact model’s measured or specified brightness, HDR10 behavior, input limitations, and intended use rather than assuming every product in a family has the same panel.

Why HDR video can still look like SDR

The app or title does not support Windows HDR streaming

Microsoft says HDR streaming is available only in certain apps. A browser, media player, or provider may deliver SDR even when Windows reports that the display is HDR-capable. Check the app’s current HDR support documentation and make sure the title is identified as HDR. Do not treat the presence of an HDR toggle in Windows as an app-compatibility guarantee.

Playback is on the wrong screen

HDR capability is evaluated for the selected display. Move the video window to the display whose HDR page says Supported, then restart the video. Microsoft notes that moving video to a non-optimized screen can cause a standard-dynamic-range stream when new content starts; restarting the app and video can make the switch occur sooner.

The video is not full screen

Use full-screen playback while testing. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance specifically calls out full-screen playback and notes that an SDR display needs the video window to be full screen to see HDR. Full screen does not make an unsupported display HDR, but it removes a common playback-state variable.

Battery policy disabled HDR

HDR video consumes more battery power when the PC is running on battery. In Settings > System > Display > HDR, expand HDR video streaming and check whether Turn off HDR video streaming when my PC is running on battery is selected. Clear it if you want HDR while unplugged, accepting the shorter battery runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Video playback is optimized for battery life

Open Settings > Apps > Video playback. Under Battery options, choose Optimize for video quality while testing HDR. A battery-life optimization can prevent HDR streaming when the computer is unplugged, even though the display itself supports it.

Energy saver reduced the brightness headroom

Microsoft warns that HDR may require the display to reach maximum brightness. Energy-saving or battery-saver behavior can lower brightness and interfere with the intended HDR experience. Temporarily disable the relevant energy-saving mode, connect AC power, and test again. If HDR returns, decide whether the extra battery use is worthwhile for your normal viewing.

A display mode or refresh rate is interfering

Different refresh rates on connected monitors can cause video to stall or repeatedly start and stop. Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and test with one display or compatible refresh rates. A dock, receiver, or switch can also alter the negotiated mode, so test the computer directly into the display when practical.

Configure an external HDR monitor or television

Use an extended desktop instead of duplication

For an external HDR display, open Settings > System > Display and set the projection mode to Extend these displays. Microsoft’s HDR settings guidance says HDR is not supported in the initial duplicate-display configuration; extending the desktop is required to use HDR on the external screen. After changing the projection mode, select the external display in the same Display page, open HDR, and perform the capability check again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the entire signal path

Confirm the computer’s output, cable or dock, receiver or switch, and display input all meet the required interface specification. Microsoft lists HDMI 2.0 or higher among possible external-display connections, along with DisplayPort 1.4, USB-C, and Thunderbolt. This does not mean every HDR failure is a cable fault, nor that replacing a working compliant cable will improve playback. Compare the interface versions required by both devices and follow the manufacturers’ connection guidance.

Check the television or monitor’s own menu

Some displays have an input option that must allow enhanced, deep-color, or HDR signals. Use the display maker’s manual for that model, select the input actually connected to the PC, and confirm that the display is not in a mode that limits the signal. Windows can report support only for the path it detects; a receiver or dock between the PC and screen may expose different capabilities.

Use the right calibration tool

Built-in display: Display calibration for HDR video

For a built-in display that can stream HDR video, open Settings > System > Display > HDR. Find Display calibration for HDR video and select Calibrate. Move the slider while looking at the provided bright and dark detail patterns, then watch representative HDR video. If highlights look washed out, reduce the setting; if shadow detail disappears, adjust in the other direction. Restore the default if the change makes the picture worse.

This control is for built-in displays. Microsoft states that it cannot calibrate an external monitor or television.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

External display or broader HDR use: Windows HDR Calibration

The Windows HDR Calibration app is a separate Windows 11 tool for an HDR-capable display with HDR turned on. Microsoft identifies it as appropriate for external HDR displays. If a built-in panel supports HDR video streaming but not HDR games and apps, use the built-in Display calibration for HDR video control instead of relying on the app. Calibration changes tone mapping; it cannot add HDR10, brightness, DRM, or codec support.

  1. Select the intended screen in Settings > System > Display and record whether HDR video streaming says Supported.
  2. Turn on the HDR video streaming checkbox only after support is shown.
  3. For an external screen, change projection to Extend these displays, then select that screen and check HDR again.
  4. Connect the laptop to AC power and set Settings > Apps > Video playback > Battery options to Optimize for video quality.
  5. Temporarily turn off energy-saving behavior that limits brightness.
  6. Use a title and app that explicitly support HDR, enter full-screen mode, and restart playback after every display or power change.
  7. If two displays are connected and playback stalls, test one display or align their refresh rates in Advanced display.
  8. Check the PC, display, GPU, dock, and cable specifications against the HDR10, interface, DRM, brightness, and codec requirements rather than replacing components at random.

If the capability remains unsupported after these checks, the limitation is likely in the display model, graphics hardware, connection path, or published device support. Windows settings cannot manufacture HDR10 support, 10-bit decoding, PlayReady hardware DRM, or an app’s missing HDR implementation.

Should you replace the display?

Consider a new monitor or television only when the current screen fails the capability check or lacks a requirement you actually need. Compare the exact model’s HDR10 support, brightness specification, certification information, input version, and compatibility with your computer’s output. A display certified at a higher DisplayHDR tier may provide stronger brightness performance, but certification does not remove app, codec, DRM, or power constraints.

An HDMI 2.0-or-higher cable is a conditional accessory, not a universal fix. It is relevant when the existing external connection does not meet the interface requirements; it is unnecessary when the current cable and ports already provide a compliant link. Verify the whole path before spending money.

What a successful result looks like

The selected display’s HDR page reports HDR video streaming: Supported, the checkbox is enabled, the external display (if used) is in extended mode, and the app and title advertise HDR support. Playback begins after the last settings change, remains stable at the chosen refresh rate, and shows preserved bright and dark detail rather than a merely brighter SDR image. If any one of those conditions fails, return to the corresponding diagnostic section instead of repeatedly toggling HDR.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I turn on HDR video streaming in Windows 11?

Go to Settings > System > Display, select the screen you will use, open HDR, confirm that HDR video streaming is marked Supported, and enable its checkbox. Start or restart playback in an app and title that support HDR.

Why does Windows say HDR video streaming is not supported?

The selected display, graphics hardware, connection, or protected-playback path may not meet the requirements. Check the exact models and specifications for HDR10, the required interface, 10-bit decoding, and PlayReady hardware DRM. A Windows setting cannot add missing hardware capability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is HDR video not working on my Windows 11 laptop when it is unplugged?

Windows can disable HDR on battery to reduce power use. In the display’s HDR page, clear Turn off HDR video streaming when my PC is running on battery, choose Optimize for video quality under Settings > Apps > Video playback, and test with energy-saving modes disabled. HDR consumes more battery.

Does HDR work when I duplicate my laptop screen to a television?

Microsoft’s guidance says HDR is not supported in the initial duplicate-display configuration. Choose Extend these displays, select the television, check its HDR capability, and restart playback.

Why does my HDR monitor say HDR video streaming is not supported even though it has an HDR label?

The label may not identify the exact HDR10 capability, brightness, input mode, or Windows-compatible path. Check the monitor’s model specification, the PC output, cable or dock, and the selected input. In Advanced display, Not found certification information is not by itself proof that HDR is impossible.

Can calibration make an unsupported display play HDR?

No. Built-in Display calibration for HDR video and the Windows HDR Calibration app adjust tone mapping on a display that already supports HDR. They cannot add HDR10, brightness, codecs, DRM, or an HDR-capable connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does HDR playback freeze or repeatedly start and stop?

Different refresh rates on connected monitors can cause this behavior. Test with one display or set compatible refresh rates under Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. Also test without an intervening dock, receiver, or switch.

Will installing HEVC or AV1 guarantee HDR?

No. HEVC, VP9, and AV1 are examples of codecs used by different services, but the provider, title, subscription, DRM path, app, display, and graphics hardware must also qualify. Installing a codec helps only when that service and device require it.

The Bottom Line

Enable HDR only after Windows reports HDR video streaming: Supported for the display you will use. Then use a compatible app and HDR title, extend rather than duplicate an external display, favor video quality over battery savings while testing, and restart playback after changes. If support is still absent, verify the complete hardware, connection, codec, and DRM path before buying anything; a toggle or calibration tool cannot create unsupported HDR capability.
