HDMI vs. DisplayPort: Which Should You Use for a Monitor?

Use whichever connection lets your specific monitor and computer or console run your intended resolution, refresh rate, color settings, HDR, and variable refresh rate (VRR). Neither HDMI nor DisplayPort is universally better: the ports and features implemented on both devices determine the result. DisplayPort is especially useful for supported multi-monitor setups; HDMI is a strong choice for monitors and is common with TVs and AV equipment.

Choose by the display mode you need

Before choosing a cable, identify the monitor and the device sending its video signal. Check both products’ specifications for the exact input or output you plan to use and the display mode you want. A port’s shape or version label alone does not confirm that a particular feature or mode is supported.

  • For gaming: Check the desired resolution and refresh rate, and confirm that VRR works over the chosen connection on both devices.
  • For high resolution or refresh rates: Compare the exact supported mode, color format and depth, HDR, and whether Display Stream Compression (DSC) is involved. Bandwidth is only one part of the answer.
  • For multiple monitors: DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport (MST) can carry video to multiple displays through a supported hub or daisy chain. Confirm that the source, hub or monitor chain, and each display support the arrangement and modes you intend to use. VESA describes MST and DisplayPort.
  • For a TV or AV receiver: HDMI is common in home entertainment, but verify the required video and audio features on the specific products.
  • For a USB-C laptop: A USB-C socket does not by itself guarantee video output. Check whether that port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode or whether a compatible dock is needed.

What bandwidth and version numbers tell you—and what they do not

Specification figures describe the capabilities of an interface generation, not a guarantee that every product bearing a related label supports every feature. The available display mode depends on both connected devices and factors including resolution, refresh rate, color format and depth, HDR, and compression. As RTINGS’ comparison, updated April 16, 2026, explains, the connection is limited by the capabilities of the source and display.

HDMI

The HDMI Forum’s November 28, 2017 HDMI 2.1 announcement specifies bandwidth up to 48 Gbps and includes modes such as 4K at 120 Hz and 8K at 60 Hz. These are specification-level capabilities, not assurances that a particular monitor, graphics card, console, or cable combination supports those modes. HDMI’s HDMI 2.2 overview describes bandwidth up to 96 Gbps and the Ultra96 HDMI cable. That ceiling likewise does not mean every HDMI 2.2 device supports every possible mode.

DisplayPort

DisplayPort capability depends on the device’s supported link rates and features. VESA’s DisplayPort 2.1b FAQ says certified devices must support at least HBR2 and DSC, along with at least one of UHBR, AdaptiveSync Secondary Data Packets, LTTPRs, or Panel Replay. VESA also notes that many displays do not need the highest link rate to achieve their maximum modes. Its stated DisplayPort 2.x maximum payload of 77.37 Gbps is a specification figure, not a product test result.

So an HDMI implementation with higher capability can be the better fit for a given mode than an older DisplayPort implementation, and the reverse can also be true. Compare the actual ports and supported modes rather than treating one interface as the automatic winner.

Check VRR and multi-display support on the actual devices

HDMI’s official 2.1 and 2.2 materials describe VRR, but that does not establish that every HDMI-equipped product offers it. Confirm the desired VRR feature over the specific port on both the source and monitor. Apply the same device-by-device check to a DisplayPort MST setup: support for the standard does not guarantee that every source, hub, display, and combination of resolutions will work as desired.

Choose a cable after checking the ports

  1. Identify the exact models. Find the monitor and the computer, graphics card, console, dock, or receiver that will connect to it.
  2. Confirm the ports and intended mode. Consult the manufacturers’ manuals or official specifications for the particular input and output, including resolution, refresh rate, color settings, HDR, VRR, and any required DSC support.
  3. Match the cable to the connection. HDMI identifies Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for HDMI 2.1’s 48 Gbps features and Ultra96 HDMI cable for HDMI 2.2 features. For DisplayPort, match the cable’s certification and link rate to the capabilities required by the connected devices.
  4. Recheck the complete signal path. If using a dock, adapter, receiver, or MST hub, confirm its specifications too; the weakest or incompatible part can prevent the intended mode.
