HDMI is usually the better choice for TVs, game consoles, streaming devices, AV receivers, and soundbars. Its consumer-device features, including eARC, variable refresh rate (VRR), and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), fit living-room systems particularly well. DisplayPort is often the more practical option for a PC monitor, especially in a multi-display setup or when the computer and monitor expose a higher-refresh mode through DisplayPort.
Neither connector is automatically superior. The usable result is limited by the exact source device, display port, cable, resolution, refresh rate, color settings, HDR mode, and adaptive-sync implementation. Choose the connection that supports the mode you actually need, not the one with the more impressive label.

The short answer: choose by equipment and required mode
Start with the display’s role. If it is a television connected to a console, media player, receiver, or soundbar, HDMI normally offers the features and wiring pattern those products expect. If it is a computer monitor, compare the supported resolution, refresh rate, color format, color depth, HDR, VRR, and interface versions on both the graphics output and the monitor input. DisplayPort may provide the desired PC mode or make a multi-monitor arrangement easier, but that is not guaranteed by the connector name alone.
When both connectors are available, use this order of priority:
#1 Best Overall
- 4K UHD and AUDIO SYNC: Supports up to 4K@30Hz resolution with backward compatibility for 1440P/2K@60Hz and 1080P Full HD. (BE SURE to NOTE: The product is passive. Also, Dock-stations are not supported) Ensures synchronized high-definition audio and video for an immersive streaming or gaming experience
- UNI-DIRECTIONAL DISPLAYPORT to HDMI ADAPTER: is designed for one-way conversion from DisplayPort source to HDMI display only. It does not support HDMI to DisplayPort conversion, so it is not suitable for HDMI source devices
- WIDE COMPATIBILITY: Perfect for graphics card (AMD, NVIDIA), desktops (HP, Dell, Lenovo) with Display Port connections, this cable delivers vibrant, realistic 4K resolution and smooth 3D visuals to large screens. (Note: Monitor - to - Monitor/ TV connection is not supported. The monitor has no data output function. A data output source is required)
- DURABLE DESIGN: The SR Flexible Strength Design, 24K gold-plated ports, latch-free and military-grade tensile nylon can ensure that this DP to HDMI adapter withstand up to 25,000 flex times and accurately transmits signals, greatly extending use life. DisplayPort is an upgraded version of DVI, designed to replace traditional interfaces like DVI. It offers significant improvements in bandwidth, functionality, and applicable scenarios
- NOTE1: Please ensure that the display resolution and refresh rate settings are consistent to avoid abnormal display; High-resolution data transmission will cause the chip to heat up, please don't worry too much
- Confirm the source and display support the same target mode.
- Check features that matter to the system, such as eARC, VRR, ALLM, HDR, or multiple-monitor operation.
- Verify the port-level specification, not merely “HDMI” or “DisplayPort” printed beside the socket.
- Select a cable rated for that mode and for the direction of any adapter.
Why HDMI often wins for TVs and home audio
One cable can carry picture, sound, and return audio
Home-theater equipment is designed around HDMI. A television can receive video and audio from a console or player, while an HDMI audio-return connection sends sound from the TV’s built-in apps or tuner back to an AV receiver or soundbar. Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC) is the relevant feature when the equipment supports it. DisplayPort does not provide the same consumer audio-return workflow, so using it in a TV system can require extra audio connections or converters.
Check the labels on every device. A television may have several HDMI inputs but expose eARC on only one. A receiver or soundbar may accept eARC or the older ARC mode on a specific output. The console, television, and audio device must all support the audio format and return-channel features you intend to use.
Console features are documented around HDMI
HDMI’s consumer specification includes features such as VRR and ALLM. VRR lets the display adjust its refresh timing to the game’s changing frame rate, while ALLM allows a compatible source to request the display’s low-latency picture mode. These features matter more in a console-to-TV connection than in a typical office display chain. Their presence in the HDMI specification does not mean every HDMI port implements them; consult the exact console and television specifications.
Fewer surprises with receivers and soundbars
Receivers, soundbars, disc players, and streaming boxes commonly provide HDMI inputs and outputs with consumer-control functions. HDMI therefore keeps switching, audio extraction, and display control within one ecosystem. A DisplayPort output from a computer can feed a television through an adapter, but it will not automatically reproduce every HDMI consumer feature. Verify the adapter’s supported audio, HDR, VRR, and resolution modes before relying on it.

When DisplayPort is the stronger PC-monitor choice
High-refresh computer displays
For a gaming or workstation monitor, the best connector is the one that exposes the required combination of resolution, refresh rate, color depth, HDR, and VRR. A graphics card may support a mode through DisplayPort that is not available through its HDMI output, or the monitor may reserve a particular high-refresh mode for one input. Read the graphics-card and monitor tables together; do not infer performance from the connector shape.
Multiple monitors and daisy-chain arrangements
VESA’s DisplayPort materials describe support for multiple displays. Depending on the graphics device, monitor, and use of a DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport (MST) hub or a monitor’s downstream output, one computer connection can feed more than one screen. Actual bandwidth is shared, and the computer and displays must support the required MST arrangement. A simple splitter is not automatically equivalent to MST and may only duplicate the same image.
USB-C docks and notebook setups
Many USB-C docks carry DisplayPort signals through the USB-C port’s alternate mode. This can simplify a laptop-to-monitor or laptop-to-dock connection, but USB-C is a connector, not a guarantee of video output. Confirm that the computer’s USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode, that the dock supports the target resolution and refresh rate, and that the dock’s downstream ports do not divide bandwidth in a way that blocks your desired mode.

Compare the factors that determine the result
| Decision factor | What to check | Why it changes the choice |
|---|---|---|
| Display type | Television, console monitor, PC monitor, receiver, or soundbar | Consumer audio-return and control features favor HDMI; PC-focused display features may favor DisplayPort. |
| Resolution and refresh rate | The exact mode listed for both source output and display input | A connector can support several modes in theory while a particular device enables only a subset. |
| HDR and color | HDR format, RGB or YCbCr output, chroma subsampling, and color depth | High resolution and refresh rate may require a reduced color format or depth if bandwidth is limited. |
| Variable refresh | VRR or adaptive-sync support on the source, display, and chosen input | Some displays support adaptive sync on only one connector or within a limited range. |
| Latency features | ALLM or the monitor’s low-latency mode | Console systems may depend on HDMI signaling to switch modes automatically. |
| Audio return | ARC or eARC port designation and supported audio formats | HDMI is the normal one-cable route from TV apps back to an audio system. |
| Multiple displays | MST, a supported dock, or independent outputs on the graphics device | DisplayPort can simplify multi-display wiring when the hardware implements the feature. |
| Cable and adapter | Certification or rating, direction, length, and supported mode | The cable or converter can become the limiting component even when both devices support the target mode. |
What the current version labels actually tell you
HDMI 2.1 and the Ultra High Speed cable
The HDMI Forum announced HDMI 2.1 on November 28, 2017. That announcement listed eARC, VRR, Quick Media Switching (QMS), Quick Frame Transport (QFT), and ALLM among the specification’s features. It also stated: “The Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable supports the 48G bandwidth for uncompressed HDMI 2.1 feature support.” That figure describes the cable category for the HDMI 2.1 feature set; it is not a claim that every HDMI connection needs such a cable.
Rank #3
- IMPORTANT: This cable is not USB-A compatible. Signal direction is one-way only: DisplayPort (computer) → HDMI (display)
- IN THE BOX: 3-foot DisplayPort to HDMI cable
- COMPATIBILITY: Transmits audio and video from DisplayPort enabled computer to HDMI display; NOT compatible with a USB port; does NOT work with Thunderbolt Dock; does NOT support LVDS signal sources such as audio/video players
- PERFORMANCE: Supports uncompressed digital audio channels (7.1, 5.1, or 2) and video resolutions up to 4K@30Hz
- UNI-DIRECTIONAL: From DisplayPort to HDMI only (not bi-directional)
Buy a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable only when the source and display specifications call for the bandwidth or features it supports. A cable upgrade cannot add VRR, eARC, or a higher refresh rate that the devices themselves do not implement. Conversely, an older cable may prevent an otherwise compatible setup from reaching its advertised mode.
HDMI 2.2 is newer, but availability is device-specific
HDMI’s current specification overview identifies HDMI 2.2 as the most recent update and describes up to 96 Gbps. Treat that as a standard capability, not a promise about a particular television, graphics card, receiver, or cable. Before buying for an HDMI 2.2 mode, confirm that the exact product ports and the required cable category support it; early availability can differ by region and product generation.
DisplayPort 2.1 and the 2.x generation
VESA announced DisplayPort 2.1 on October 17, 2022, describing it as backward compatible with and superseding DisplayPort 2.0. The announcement discussed cable interoperability and bandwidth management. VESA’s current developer materials describe a maximum payload of 77.37 Gbps for the DisplayPort 2.x generation and support for multiple displays.
That payload is a standards-level capability. A computer may expose an earlier DisplayPort mode, a monitor may implement only part of the standard, and a dock or cable may impose another limit. Verify the complete signal path before treating a DisplayPort 2.1 label as evidence of a specific resolution or refresh rate.

How to choose the connection step by step
- Write down the target mode. Record resolution, refresh rate, HDR requirement, color depth, VRR requirement, and whether audio must return from a TV to a receiver or soundbar.
- Identify the source output. Check the graphics card, console, laptop, media player, or receiver manual for the exact HDMI or DisplayPort output specification. For USB-C, confirm DisplayPort Alt Mode rather than assuming video is available.
- Inspect the display input. Note which physical port supports the target mode. On televisions, identify the eARC input and any input-specific gaming settings. On monitors, check whether the highest refresh rate or adaptive-sync range is limited to one connector.
- Match capabilities. The source and display must both support the same mode. If one side lists a lower refresh rate, reduced color depth, or no HDR/VRR on that input, that is the usable ceiling.
- Check the cable path. Include wall plates, docks, switches, receivers, and adapters. Every intermediate device must pass the required signal.
- Choose the simplest direct connection. Use a direct cable when the ports match. Add a switch, dock, or adapter only when it solves a real wiring requirement and its specifications cover the target mode.
- Configure the operating system or console. Select the intended resolution and refresh rate, enable HDR or VRR where appropriate, and turn on the television’s game or low-latency mode if it is not automatic.
- Verify the result. Confirm the display reports the expected refresh rate and HDR mode. Test a game or video, and check for flicker, dropouts, black screens, or audio-return problems.
Cables, adapters, and directionality
When an HDMI cable is the right purchase
Use the manufacturer’s port specification to determine the cable category. For a setup that explicitly needs HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, look for a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rather than relying on an unverified “8K” or “gaming” label. The cable’s rating must be considered alongside length and any switch, receiver, or wall connection in the path.
When a DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter helps
A DisplayPort source can feed an HDMI display through a DisplayPort-to-HDMI cable or adapter. Direction matters: a product designed for DisplayPort output to HDMI input is not automatically reversible. Check whether the adapter is passive or active, the maximum supported resolution and refresh rate, HDR and VRR behavior, and audio support. DisplayPort’s official materials identify this type of conversion, but the connected devices still determine the final mode.
Why adapters can remove features
Conversion may translate the basic video signal while dropping eARC, ALLM, VRR, HDR, or high-refresh support. An adapter can also be limited by the older interface on the display side. If a feature is essential, choose a direct connection with native support whenever possible and treat an adapter as a device-specific compatibility solution rather than a universal upgrade.

Console connected to a television
Use HDMI first. Confirm that the console, television input, and cable support the desired resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and VRR. If a soundbar or receiver sits between the console and TV, verify that it passes the same video features; otherwise connect the console directly to the TV and use eARC for audio when the equipment supports that arrangement.

Desktop PC connected to one monitor
Compare the monitor’s highest supported mode on each input with the graphics card’s outputs. Choose DisplayPort if it is the only path that supports the required refresh rate, color depth, or adaptive-sync range. Choose HDMI when it offers the same mode and is more convenient for the monitor or audio system.
Desktop PC with several monitors
Count independent outputs and check whether the graphics device and monitors support MST. DisplayPort may reduce cable clutter through a supported daisy chain or hub, but total bandwidth and the dock’s capabilities still apply. Separate direct outputs can be more predictable when every monitor requires a demanding mode.
Laptop with a USB-C dock
Confirm video support on the laptop’s USB-C port, the dock’s DisplayPort or HDMI outputs, and the dock’s bandwidth-sharing rules. If the monitor intermittently drops signal, test a direct laptop-to-monitor connection to isolate whether the dock or its cable is the bottleneck.

Common failure symptoms and fixes
Black screen or “no signal”
- Set the source to a lower resolution or refresh rate, then increase it after a stable image appears.
- Try the display’s specified high-bandwidth input; some televisions reserve advanced modes for one HDMI port.
- Remove a switch, receiver, dock, or adapter temporarily and test a direct cable.
- Confirm that a DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter is oriented from the source output to the display input.
- Replace the cable with one rated for the target mode.
Refresh rate is lower than expected
- Check the operating system’s display settings and the monitor’s on-screen menu.
- Verify that HDR, high color depth, and chroma settings are not consuming bandwidth beyond what the link can carry.
- Read the monitor manual for input-specific limits; the same panel may have different ceilings on HDMI and DisplayPort.
- Check the graphics driver and dock specifications if the connection passes through USB-C.
VRR or ALLM does not activate
- Enable the feature on both source and display; automatic signaling is not universal.
- Use the port identified by the television or monitor as supporting VRR.
- Remove an intermediary device that may not pass the feature.
- Confirm that the adapter supports the feature; many adapters handle basic video only.
Picture works but TV audio does not return
- Connect the audio system to the television’s ARC/eARC-designated HDMI port.
- Enable eARC or ARC in the TV and receiver or soundbar menus.
- Check that the cable and intermediate devices support the required return channel.
- If the source is connected through DisplayPort conversion, test a native HDMI path for the TV and audio equipment.
Version-label mistakes to avoid
- “HDMI 2.1 always means every feature.” Manufacturers can implement different subsets. Check the port table for eARC, VRR, ALLM, QMS, QFT, HDR, and the supported modes.
- “DisplayPort 2.1 guarantees the maximum payload.” The 77.37 Gbps figure is a VESA 2.x-generation capability, not a promise that every computer, monitor, dock, or cable reaches it.
- “A new cable fixes an old device.” Cable bandwidth cannot add a missing output mode or feature in the source or display.
- “The newest connector is automatically best.” A television with eARC and console features may be better served by HDMI, while a PC workstation may benefit from DisplayPort’s implemented multi-display capabilities.
- “Any USB-C port carries DisplayPort.” Confirm DisplayPort Alt Mode and the dock’s actual video support.
Practical decision examples
Soundbar, television, and console
Choose HDMI. Connect the console according to the television’s supported gaming input, connect the soundbar or receiver to the eARC port when required, and verify VRR, ALLM, HDR, and audio settings on the exact devices.
1440p or 4K PC gaming monitor
Compare the graphics card and monitor mode tables. If DisplayPort is the only input that supports the desired refresh rate and adaptive-sync range, use it. If HDMI supports the same mode and you need the monitor’s HDMI-based audio or device compatibility, HDMI is equally valid.
Three monitors from a notebook
Use a dock or MST arrangement only when the notebook, dock, and monitors document support for the combined resolutions and refresh rates. Otherwise use independent outputs or reduce the target modes. The connector label alone does not reveal how bandwidth will be shared.
Bottom line
HDMI wins when the system is built around consumer electronics, especially a TV with a console, receiver, or soundbar. DisplayPort wins when a PC monitor or multi-display workflow actually provides the required mode through DisplayPort. Compare the source, display, cable, and every intermediate device as one signal path; the best connector is the one that delivers your needed picture, sound, refresh, and control features reliably.
