HDMI to RCA for Audio: When a Cable Fails and What Converter You Need

Usually, a passive HDMI-to-RCA cable will not work for audio. HDMI carries digital audio, while the red and white RCA inputs on older stereos and powered speakers expect two-channel analog audio. A working connection normally requires a powered HDMI audio extractor or another active digital-to-analog converter.

The right device depends on the signal path. HDMI source to stereo needs an extractor with RCA left/right output; TV sound returned over HDMI needs an ARC/eARC-to-RCA converter; HDMI source to an older television with yellow, red and white inputs needs an HDMI-to-composite AV converter.

Why an HDMI-to-RCA cable normally fails

The connectors look as though they should join, but connector shape does not tell you whether the electrical signal is compatible. HDMI transports digital audio and video in a high-speed data stream. The red and white RCA sockets found on older receivers, amplifiers and televisions are analog line-level inputs: red is normally right-channel audio and white is left-channel audio.

A passive cable only changes the physical plug arrangement. It does not decode the HDMI data, extract an audio stream, convert digital samples to analog voltage, or provide the power and handshaking that HDMI equipment may require. With a passive lead you may get no sound at all, or the source may refuse to send a signal because the HDMI connection has not completed its normal negotiation.

Some products sold as “HDMI to RCA” are not cables in the passive sense. They contain electronics, a USB lead or wall adapter, and an enclosure with clearly labeled HDMI and RCA ports. Treat those as converters. Confirm the input and output labels rather than relying on a product title or the fact that both ends use familiar connectors.

First identify the job you are trying to do

There are three common connections that are often confused. They require different hardware and, in the TV case, a different HDMI signal direction.

Use case Device you need Outputs to look for Important checks
HDMI player, console or streaming device to a stereo HDMI audio extractor Analog RCA left/right (often alongside optical or 3.5 mm) HDMI input, PCM or two-channel support, power, source compatibility
Smart TV to an older stereo using HDMI return audio ARC-to-RCA or eARC-to-RCA converter RCA left/right, sometimes 3.5 mm or optical Correct TV ARC/eARC port, supported mode, TV audio settings, RCA behavior in ARC mode
HDMI source to a television or monitor with yellow/red/white RCA inputs HDMI-to-composite AV converter Yellow composite video plus red/white analog audio Supported HDMI resolution, NTSC/PAL output, power, HDCP behavior

An audio extractor is for sound only. It does not turn an HDMI picture into composite video. A composite converter handles both picture and stereo sound, but its yellow output is a separate video conversion stage. An ARC converter is not interchangeable with either device because it receives audio travelling back from a compatible television HDMI port.

How an HDMI audio extractor works

An extractor receives HDMI from a source, keeps the HDMI video available for a display when the model supports pass-through, and separates the audio stream. Its digital-to-analog circuitry then provides a line-level left/right output for a stereo amplifier, powered speakers or another legacy audio input. The extractor must be powered because the conversion and HDMI negotiation are active electronic functions.

For an ordinary source-to-stereo setup, the source is the HDMI transmitter and the extractor is the HDMI receiver. Connect the extractor’s analog outputs to a stereo input such as AUX, CD or LINE IN—not to a turntable input, which is designed for a much lower signal and different equalization. Set the source to a format the extractor can decode. Many RCA outputs accept PCM stereo; they may not decode Dolby, DTS or other multichannel bitstreams.

How to connect HDMI source audio to RCA stereo equipment

  1. Confirm the source and destination. Identify the HDMI output on the player, console or set-top box and the red/white line-level input on the amplifier or powered speakers.
  2. Choose an extractor with the correct direction. The product should state HDMI input and analog RCA L/R output. Do not choose a unit that only advertises RCA input and HDMI output.
  3. Connect HDMI. Run an HDMI cable from the source’s HDMI output to the extractor’s HDMI input. If the extractor has HDMI pass-through, connect its HDMI output to the display.
  4. Connect analog audio. Run the extractor’s red and white RCA outputs to a stereo line input, matching red to right and white to left.
  5. Apply power. Use the supplied USB lead or power adapter exactly as specified. A converter that is not powered cannot perform the digital-to-analog conversion.
  6. Select a compatible audio mode. In the source’s sound menu, select PCM, stereo or two-channel output when available. Bitstream, Dolby and DTS settings can produce silence if the extractor only accepts PCM.
  7. Select the stereo input and test. Choose the input used for the RCA cables, raise the stereo volume gradually, and test with a known stereo program.

Getting sound from a TV: ARC and eARC are different paths

When the sound originates in a television’s built-in apps, tuner or HDMI-connected devices, a normal HDMI output is not necessarily available. Audio may travel out through the television’s HDMI port using Audio Return Channel (ARC). The converter must explicitly support ARC and must be connected to the TV port labeled ARC or eARC. Plugging into an ordinary HDMI input will not create a return-audio path.

Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC) is a newer mode with different capabilities. A converter that supports ARC may not support eARC. For example, J-Tech Digital’s EXD product page states: “Note: Supports ARC, but not eARC.” That is a model-specific compatibility note, not a rule that applies to every extractor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ARC-capable products can also differ in where they provide converted sound. One J-Tech model description documents ARC audio being available over optical rather than RCA in a particular mode. Other units provide RCA, 3.5 mm or optical simultaneously, while some disable one output when ARC is selected. Read the exact manual and output table for the model you are buying.

TV-to-stereo setup procedure

  1. Locate the TV port. Find the HDMI socket marked ARC or eARC. Check the television manual if the label is unclear.
  2. Match the converter. Choose an ARC-to-RCA converter for an ARC television, or an eARC-compatible model if the TV is set to eARC and the converter requires eARC.
  3. Connect the HDMI cable. Connect the labeled TV port to the converter’s ARC/eARC HDMI port. Direction matters; a regular HDMI input on the converter may not accept return audio.
  4. Connect RCA audio. Connect the converter’s left/right analog outputs to a line-level stereo input.
  5. Enable return audio. In the TV sound settings, enable ARC, HDMI-CEC or the manufacturer’s equivalent option when required. TV menu names vary.
  6. Set a supported format. Select PCM or stereo if the converter’s analog output requires two-channel PCM. Do not assume the converter will decode Dolby Atmos or DTS.
  7. Verify output behavior. Test a built-in TV app and an HDMI source. If one works and the other does not, inspect the selected audio format and the converter’s ARC limitations.

Audio formats: PCM is often the safe choice

RCA left/right is an analog stereo output. The converter must receive an audio format it can decode and downmix. The OREI DA25 is described by its manufacturer as converting PCM to two-channel stereo through RCA and 3.5 mm outputs. Its specification notes that it does not support Dolby Atmos or DTS decoding and does not perform those formats’ downmixing. That type of limitation is common enough that the source or TV should be set to PCM when an analog output is required.

Do not infer format support from the presence of an HDMI socket. Check whether the unit accepts PCM only, supports compressed stereo, or can decode multichannel formats. A receiver that passes HDMI video may still mute its RCA output when the audio stream is an unsupported bitstream.

HDMI to RCA Converter, HDMI to AV Composite Adapter Supports PAL/NTSC
  • HDMI to RCA Converter: This convert HDMI video signal to normal CVBS signal, Available for TV, VHS VCR, DVD recorders, etc.
  • HDMI to AV Converter: support two formats of PAL and NTSC output with a selecting switch, usually NTSC for America, PAL for other Countries. Note: If your TV shows black and white, Please change RCA format NTSC to PAL or PAL to NTSC by the N/P switch.
  • Esay to use : Plug and play without any drivers, portable and flexible. Please hook up the USB power cable (included) to 5V power source during use(no included).
  • HDMI 1.3 Input: Support HDMI input from 480i to 1080P, does not support 3D and 4K. It can work properly for TV Stick (such as Fire Stick). But do not support with mobile phones and iPad series.
  • Compatible: HDMI to AV Adapter Suitable for TV Stick, Roku, Blu-Ray, DVD player, Android TV Box, PC, more. Then connect the RCA end into any display with RCA inputs such as Monitor/ Older TV/ Projector and more.

When you need HDMI-to-composite video and audio

If the destination has yellow, red and white RCA inputs, it is asking for composite AV: yellow carries standard-definition composite video, while red and white carry analog stereo. An HDMI audio extractor with RCA left/right cannot create the yellow picture. Choose an HDMI-to-composite converter with HDMI input and yellow/red/white outputs.

Video conversion introduces additional compatibility checks:

  • Source resolution: Verify the HDMI resolutions the converter accepts. The manufacturer of the Aluratek HDMI to RCA Converter states that its unit supports 1080p input signals and outputs composite video and audio. That is a product specification, not a guarantee for every HDMI source.
  • Television standard: Some converters let you select NTSC or PAL. The setting must match the display and region; an incorrect standard can produce a rolling, distorted or black picture.
  • Audio channel: Confirm that the red/white outputs are left/right analog stereo, not a digital coaxial connector that merely uses an RCA-style plug.
  • Power: Composite conversion is active electronics. The Aluratek unit can use USB power or its included adapter; Cirago’s HDM2ACRCA is listed with optional USB power. Follow the exact model’s power instructions.
  • Content protection: HDMI sources may use HDCP. A converter’s stated HDCP compatibility and the source’s output behavior determine whether protected content displays.

Manufacturer-documented examples and what they illustrate

These products demonstrate the categories rather than serving as universal recommendations. Stock, specifications and prices can change, and a model that fits one source and display may not fit another.

Example Manufacturer-described function What it teaches
Aluratek HDMI to RCA Converter Connects HDMI devices to legacy RCA display equipment; supports 1080p signals; outputs composite video and audio; powered by USB or the included adapter. This is a powered HDMI-to-composite AV converter, not a passive audio cable.
Cirago HDM2ACRCA HDMI input with yellow/red/white RCA output, NTSC or PAL composite video, and left/right analog audio; optional USB power is listed. Composite video standard and power are purchase criteria alongside the connectors.
OREI DA25 ARC/eARC-to-analog unit with RCA and 3.5 mm outputs and PCM-to-two-channel stereo conversion; the specification excludes Dolby Atmos/DTS decoding and downmixing. TV return audio and audio-format limits must be checked separately.
J-Tech Digital EXD ARC / JTD-3146 Described for HDMI-to-RCA/optical extraction and TV ARC use; the manufacturer states ARC support but not eARC support and documents downmix and video specifications. ARC capability is model-specific and does not automatically include eARC.
J-Tech Digital JTD18G-H5CH2 Lists RCA output as analog stereo and states that RCA/analog output cannot support a digital audio format. An RCA-shaped output can still have strict format requirements; read the output notes.

Buying checklist: verify these specifications before ordering

  • Signal direction: HDMI input to RCA output for source extraction; ARC/eARC input path for TV return audio; HDMI input to yellow/red/white output for composite AV.
  • Required result: Decide whether you need stereo sound only or picture and sound. Do not pay for a video converter when an audio extractor is sufficient, and do not expect an audio-only extractor to drive a composite display.
  • Analog output type: Confirm RCA left/right line-level output. A digital coaxial output can use an RCA connector but is not the same as analog audio.
  • Audio format: Look for PCM or two-channel support. Check whether Dolby, DTS, Atmos or other formats are unsupported, passed through, or downmixed.
  • ARC/eARC mode: Match the converter to the TV’s labeled port and mode. Check which outputs remain active while ARC is selected.
  • Video requirements: For composite conversion, check accepted HDMI resolution, NTSC/PAL selection and HDCP notes.
  • Power and accessories: Confirm whether USB power is sufficient, whether a wall adapter is included, and whether the converter must be powered for HDMI handshaking.
  • Documentation: Read the exact manual or product page for the model number. Similar names can hide different output behavior.

Troubleshooting a silent or blank connection

No sound from an HDMI source

  • Check that HDMI is connected to the extractor’s input, not its output.
  • Confirm the RCA plugs are connected to a stereo line input and that the stereo is set to that input.
  • Power-cycle the source, extractor and display so HDMI handshaking starts again.
  • Change the source audio setting to PCM or stereo.
  • Verify that the extractor is powered and that its indicator light, if provided, is on.
  • Test another HDMI source or a known-good RCA input to isolate the failed component.

TV ARC produces no audio

  • Move the HDMI cable to the TV’s ARC/eARC-labeled port.
  • Ensure the converter supports the TV’s ARC or eARC mode; ARC-only hardware may not work when the TV is configured for eARC.
  • Enable ARC/CEC in the TV settings and select external audio output.
  • Set digital audio output to PCM if the converter’s analog stage does not accept compressed or multichannel audio.
  • Check the converter manual for which output is active in ARC mode; RCA may be disabled on some models.

Picture works but audio or video is wrong on a composite setup

  • For sound, verify red and white are connected to the display’s audio inputs and that the source is outputting stereo.
  • For a rolling or black picture, check the NTSC/PAL switch and the display’s supported standard.
  • Check the converter’s accepted HDMI resolution and reduce the source output if necessary.
  • Confirm the converter is powered and inspect the source’s HDCP compatibility information.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying by connector shape: HDMI and RCA plugs do not establish signal compatibility.
  • Reversing the direction: HDMI-to-RCA and RCA-to-HDMI are different conversion jobs and require different electronics.
  • Confusing audio-only RCA with composite AV: Red/white outputs do not imply a yellow video output.
  • Using a phono input: Connect line-level converter output to AUX, CD or LINE IN, not a turntable input.
  • Assuming ARC is universal: The TV port, converter mode and active outputs all matter.
  • Leaving a multichannel bitstream enabled: Analog stereo outputs often require PCM.
  • Ignoring power: A converter cannot decode HDMI while unpowered, even if the cable itself fits.

Bottom line: choose the converter for the signal path

A passive HDMI-to-RCA cable is generally not an audio solution because it cannot convert HDMI’s digital stream into the analog signal expected by red and white RCA inputs. Use a powered HDMI audio extractor for an HDMI source feeding stereo equipment, an ARC/eARC-to-RCA converter for compatible TV return audio, or an HDMI-to-composite AV converter when an older display needs yellow video as well as red/white sound. Verify direction, audio format, ARC/eARC mode, video standard and power for the exact model before connecting it.
