For a 4K/120Hz console or PC, choose an HDMI switch that explicitly lists 4K/120Hz, the gaming features you need, and enough inputs for your sources. Two manufacturer-documented 2-in/1-out examples are StarTech’s 2PORT-HDMI-SWITCH-8K and BZBGEAR’s BG-8K-HS21; their specifications differ, so check the individual feature list rather than relying on an “8K” or HDMI-version label.
What an HDMI switch does—and when you need one
An HDMI switch connects multiple source devices to one display and lets you select which source appears. It is useful when a TV or projector has fewer available HDMI inputs than your console, PC, receiver, or other sources. A switch is not the same as an HDMI splitter, which sends one source to multiple displays, or a matrix device, which routes sources to multiple displays in configurable combinations.

Count your sources before comparing video specifications. Both HDMI 2.1 examples below have two inputs and one output; if you need more inputs, look for a switch with a higher input count. If you need separate displays, confirm that a matrix device supports the routing behavior you want.
What to check before choosing a switch
Video mode and bandwidth
Start with the signal you actually want to pass through: resolution, refresh rate, and, where relevant, chroma and color depth. For current-generation gaming, confirm explicit support for 4K/120Hz rather than assuming it from “8K” branding. Both examples in this guide list 48Gbps bandwidth and 4K/120Hz; StarTech also lists 4K/144Hz.

The HDMI Licensing Administrator’s bandwidth and resolutions overview describes HDMI 2.2 as supporting up to 96Gbps and includes modes such as uncompressed 8K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz. Those are specification capabilities, not evidence that a particular switch implements HDMI 2.2. Check the switch’s own documented modes and confirm that the source, display, and any receiver in the path support the same signal.
Gaming, HDR, and copy-protection features
Check each feature individually: variable refresh rate (VRR), Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), HDR formats, HDCP, audio formats, and Consumer Electronics Control (CEC). Feature lists vary by model; an HDMI version or resolution label alone does not establish that every feature you use will pass through.

Input selection and control
Switches may offer a physical button, automatic source selection, a remote, or a combination. Choose controls that fit how your devices are arranged. If automatic switching is available, consider whether it can be disabled: devices waking in the background may otherwise change the active input unexpectedly.
Power, cables, and installation
Check the power method, included accessories, and mounting options before buying. For high-bandwidth modes, the cables must support the signal you intend to send. Cable length can also affect reliability; BZBGEAR’s manual warns that excessive cable length can cause flicker. StarTech specifies HDMI 2.1a cables for full functionality, while BZBGEAR advises using cables compatible with the desired signal.

Quick selection checklist
- Count the HDMI sources you need to connect and confirm the switch has enough inputs.
- Confirm the output arrangement: one display for a switch, or the required routing behavior for a matrix device.
- Match the switch’s documented resolution and refresh rate to your intended signal, including 4K/120Hz if required.
- Check VRR, ALLM, HDR formats, HDCP, audio formats, and CEC individually against your equipment.
- Choose manual, automatic, or remote selection based on your setup and whether automatic switching can be disabled.
- Confirm power and installation requirements, then use cables rated for the intended mode and practical cable lengths.
- Verify compatibility across the complete chain—source, switch, receiver if present, display, and cables—not just the switch’s “8K” or HDMI-version label.
