HDMI Adapters and Converters: Connecting Modern Consoles to Older TVs

To connect a modern console to an older television, the converter must take HDMI as its input and output the exact analog format your TV accepts. A television with only yellow/red/white RCA, component, S-video or SCART sockets cannot read a console’s digital HDMI signal directly. You need an active digital-to-analog converter, plus the correct cable and compatible video standard. If the TV has an HDMI socket, skip conversion and connect the console directly.

Identify the TV input before buying anything

Look at the sockets on the television itself, not just the cable you already own. Connector names in product titles are often ambiguous: “RCA to HDMI” commonly means an older analog source going to a modern HDMI display, which is the opposite of the connection needed here.

HDMI

An HDMI socket is the simplest case. Use a direct HDMI cable from the console to the TV, select the matching HDMI input with the remote, and configure the console for a resolution the television supports. A converter adds no benefit when both devices already use HDMI.

Composite RCA (yellow, red and white)

Yellow is composite video; red and white carry the two audio channels. Search for an HDMI to composite AV converter that explicitly labels HDMI as the input and composite/AV/RCA as the output. Composite is the lowest-resolution option in this group, so text and fine interface details will look softer than they do on a modern display.

Component video

Component normally uses green, blue and red video connectors, with separate red and white audio. The green socket may be marked Y, while the blue and red sockets are often Pb/Cb and Pr/Cr. Component and composite RCA are not interchangeable merely because both use RCA-style plugs. The converter must document HDMI input and component output, and the TV must support the output mode the converter produces.

S-video

S-video carries video through a round multi-pin connector and still requires separate audio. A converter that outputs composite cannot be assumed to provide S-video, and a device that converts S-video to HDMI runs in the reverse direction. Check the labeled signal path and the manual.

SCART

SCART is a large 21-pin connector used mainly on European televisions. An HDMI-to-SCART converter must support the television’s regional video mode and the particular SCART wiring expected by that set. A SCART plug or adapter by itself does not perform digital-to-analog conversion.

TV socket Converter category Checks before purchase
HDMI No converter; direct HDMI cable Confirm the TV input, cable condition and supported resolution/refresh rate.
Composite RCA HDMI input to composite AV/RCA output Signal direction, PAL/NTSC support, audio output, power and HDCP compatibility.
Component HDMI input to component output Exact Y/Pb/Pr output, separate audio handling and supported video modes.
S-video HDMI input to S-video output, if documented Do not substitute a composite-only converter; verify the S-video pinout and regional standard.
SCART HDMI input to region-appropriate SCART output Supported PAL/NTSC mode, SCART wiring and audio routing.

Understand what the converter is doing

HDMI carries a digital audio-and-video signal. Analog-only inputs such as composite, component, S-video and SCART expect a different electrical signal, so a passive plug adapter cannot make the connection. An active converter receives HDMI, processes it, and generates the analog format required by the television.

Direction matters more than the connector names. A unit advertised as “RCA to HDMI” generally accepts composite or other analog sources and produces HDMI for a newer television. It will not normally accept a console’s HDMI output and create an RCA signal. For example, the REX-AV2HD-4K is described as accepting composite or S-video and outputting HDMI; that signal path is useful for an old VCR or game system feeding a modern display, not for an HDMI console feeding an analog TV. Likewise, an HDMI/AV selector with several inputs and one HDMI output only switches sources; it does not convert HDMI into composite.

Inspect the product diagram for arrows or labels such as “HDMI IN” and “AV OUT.” Do not infer direction from a product title, the presence of an HDMI socket, or the fact that an included cable fits.

Specification Why it matters What is established here
Signal direction The HDMI socket must be the input and the TV-format socket the output. Required for this use; verify on the exact model manual.
Output resolution and refresh rate The analog TV can display only the modes it supports; conversion may scale or limit the console signal. Exact limits vary by model and TV; not stated for an unverified device.
HDCP compatibility Copy-protection handshakes can prevent a picture even when plugs fit. Check the converter and console combination; no universal compatibility is established.
Regional standard PAL and NTSC timing and color systems differ, and some TVs accept only one. Confirm the converter’s documented PAL/NTSC support for your region.
Audio handling Some converters send audio through the analog output; others expose a separate 3.5-mm or RCA output. Exact routing is model-specific and not stated for an unverified device.
Power Most active converters need USB or another external supply; the TV socket cannot power them reliably. Use the supplied power requirement and a stable adapter.
Latency Processing can add delay between a controller action and the image. No latency measurement or performance test is established here.

Set up the connection step by step

  1. Read the TV labels. Write down whether the set accepts HDMI, composite, component, S-video or SCART. If the sockets are hidden behind a flap, consult the television manual for their exact function.
  2. Check the console output. Modern consoles normally provide HDMI output. Make sure the console is not being routed through an unrelated switch, receiver or capture device while you test.
  3. Choose the correctly directed converter. The listing and manual should say HDMI input and your TV format as output. Confirm the maximum output mode, PAL/NTSC support, audio path, HDCP notes and power requirement.
  4. Connect the analog side first. Plug the converter’s composite, component, S-video or SCART output into the matching TV input. For component, connect all three video plugs and the separate red/white audio pair.
  5. Connect HDMI from the console to the converter’s HDMI input. Use a sound cable and avoid forcing a plug into a socket with a similar shape but different function.
  6. Power the converter. Use its specified USB or mains supply. Some units show a power light; that light only confirms power, not a successful HDMI handshake.
  7. Select the TV input. Choose AV, Component, S-video or the numbered SCART input that corresponds to the connected sockets. Selecting the wrong input produces a blank screen even when the wiring is correct.
  8. Start with a conservative console video mode. If the converter manual lists a maximum resolution, set the console to a supported mode. Older televisions may require 480i/576i-style output rather than a progressive or high-definition mode.
  9. Test audio and controls. Confirm that game sound comes from the TV and that controller input remains responsive. If video appears without sound, recheck the converter’s audio output and the TV’s audio-input pairing.

Console-specific limits: what a PS5 can output versus what an old TV can show

Sony documents PS5 output resolutions including 720p, 1080i, 1080p and 2160p. With a compatible television or monitor and suitable equipment, the console supports HDMI 2.1 features and up to 4K at 120 Hz. Sony recommends the included HDMI 2.1 cable for those high-performance features, while noting that older HDMI cables can also be used for compatible lower-bandwidth connections.

Those capabilities describe the console and a compatible modern display; they do not mean an analog television or an HDMI-to-analog converter can display 4K, 120 Hz or HDMI 2.1 features. The converter and television impose their own resolution, refresh-rate, aspect-ratio and color limits. Expect the picture to be scaled to an older format, with less detail than a direct HDMI connection.

If a PS5 produces no image through an intermediary, Sony’s troubleshooting guidance is to verify the cable and selected TV input, try another cable or HDMI port, and connect the console directly to the screen to isolate the intermediary device. Its resolution guidance also notes that results depend on the television, cable, port, intermediary equipment, firmware and console settings.

Regional video standards, HDCP and audio need separate checks

PAL and NTSC

PAL and NTSC describe regional video timing and color conventions. A converter sold for one standard may output a signal an older television from another region cannot lock onto. Look for explicit PAL, NTSC or multi-system support in the manual, and verify whether the setting is automatic or selected with a switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HDCP handshakes

HDCP is copy-protection signaling carried over many HDMI connections. A console, converter and display must complete a compatible handshake before video appears. A converter that works with one console or firmware version is not proof that it will work with every other combination. Treat HDCP compatibility as a model-specific requirement, not an assumption.

Audio routing

Composite and component setups generally need separate analog audio. Some HDMI-to-analog units extract the console’s audio and send it to red/white RCA outputs; others use a headphone-style jack or require a separate audio connection. Confirm where the converter sends sound and which TV audio input is paired with the selected video input.

Aspect ratio and image delay

An older 4:3 television may display a widescreen console image with bars, stretching or cropping. The converter may offer no aspect-ratio control, leaving the television to scale the picture. Processing can also introduce delay, but no latency figure or hands-on performance result is established for a particular model here; check independent measurements when timing-sensitive games matter.

Connection recipes by TV type

TV with yellow, red and white sockets

Use an HDMI-to-composite converter. HDMI from the console goes into the converter; yellow video and red/white audio go from the converter to the matching TV inputs. Power the converter separately, select the TV’s AV input and use a console mode the manual says it can convert.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TV with green, blue and red video sockets

Use an HDMI-to-component converter, not a composite unit. Connect Y, Pb/Cb and Pr/Cr to the corresponding TV sockets and connect the converter’s separate audio outputs. Confirm that the converter actually generates an interlaced or progressive mode accepted by the television.

European TV with SCART

Use an HDMI-to-SCART converter designed for the television’s regional standard. Verify whether the SCART input expects composite video, RGB or another mode, because a mechanically fitting plug can still carry the wrong signal.

TV with more than one legacy input

Choose the input that gives the converter the clearest documented path. Do not assume component is available just because the television has red, white and yellow connectors; those colors may be audio plus composite, whereas component uses three separate video channels.

Troubleshoot a blank screen or missing sound

  • No power light: use the specified power adapter or USB source, and test another outlet or cable if the manual permits.
  • “No signal” on the TV: confirm the TV input, HDMI direction and converter output format. Remove switches and receivers, then test the console directly on an HDMI display to isolate the console.
  • Picture appears briefly and disappears: suspect an HDMI handshake or unsupported output mode. Reboot the console and converter, try another HDMI cable or port, and select a lower supported resolution.
  • Black-and-white or rolling picture: check PAL/NTSC compatibility and any regional switch on the converter or television.
  • Picture but no audio: verify the red/white or other analog audio plugs, the TV’s paired audio input and the converter’s documented audio extraction path.
  • Distorted, stretched or cropped image: inspect the TV’s aspect-ratio controls and the converter’s scaling options. The analog display may simply be limited to a 4:3 or interlaced presentation.
  • Unacceptable controller delay: remove unnecessary processing devices, enable the TV’s game or low-latency mode if available, and recognize that the converter itself may add processing delay. No universal delay value can be promised.

When a converter is the wrong solution

If the television already has a working HDMI input, direct connection is more reliable and preserves the display’s supported resolution, refresh rate, HDR and other HDMI features. Before purchasing anything, select the correct HDMI input, try another cable or port, and check the console’s video-output settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A converter also cannot upgrade an analog television. It cannot create 4K detail, 120-Hz refresh, HDR or HDMI 2.1 functions that the panel and input circuitry do not support. Its purpose is compatibility—turning one signal format into another—not improving the capabilities of the older display.

What to look for in a listing

Use the search phrase HDMI to composite AV converter for a yellow/red/white television, or substitute component, S-video or SCART for the required output. Before ordering, open the manufacturer’s diagram or manual and verify:

  • HDMI is labeled input and the legacy connector is labeled output.
  • Your console’s output modes are within the converter’s stated input range.
  • The converter’s analog output mode matches the TV’s PAL/NTSC and interlacing requirements.
  • HDCP support, audio extraction and power requirements are documented.
  • The package contains any needed analog audio cable, power supply or regional plug adapter.

No particular unverified model can be guaranteed to work with every console and television combination. Compatibility depends on the exact console firmware, converter design, TV input circuitry, cables and regional standard, so retain the documentation and buy from a source with a practical return policy.
