HD Ready vs Full HD: Which Resolution Should You Choose for a 32- or 43-Inch TV?

Full HD has more pixels than HD, but the label alone does not tell you a television’s exact native panel resolution. For either a 32-inch or 43-inch TV, check the model’s specification and consider how far you sit; treat viewing-distance charts as guidance, not a guarantee that you will see a difference.

What do HD Ready and Full HD mean?

LG’s 2026 guide lists HD as 1280 × 720 pixels and Full HD as 1920 × 1080 pixels. Full HD therefore has more pixels, which can allow finer detail when the source video and other viewing conditions make that detail available. These labels are useful shorthand, but they are not a substitute for checking the panel specification of the particular TV.

For example, a Philips Professional 32-inch television product sheet issued on 24 March 2024 calls the set HD Ready and lists a native panel resolution of 1366 × 768 pixels. That model-specific example is why you should not assume every HD Ready screen is exactly 1280 × 720. LG’s guide to HD and Full HD and the Philips 32-inch product sheet show the distinction between a general label and an exact panel specification.

Does the difference matter at 32 or 43 inches?

Screen size and seating distance both affect how useful extra resolution may be. A larger screen viewed from the same distance can make pixel detail easier to discern than a smaller one, but there is no universal distance at which every viewer will notice a difference between HD Ready and Full HD. The evidence here does not establish a perception threshold for either size.

Manufacturer recommendations can help with room planning, but they should not be treated as scientific pass-or-fail limits. Xiaomi recommends 1.2–1.6 m between sofa and its 32-inch HD example, and 1.6–2.1 m for its 43-inch HD example; the support page does not state a date for those figures. Xiaomi’s recommended viewing distances are brand guidance, not universal rules.

Sony’s support guidance also gives size-specific recommended distances for HD displays, including 32-inch and 43-inch sets, and says distance depends on both screen size and resolution. Its recommendations may depend on model or market, so use the figures as a starting point rather than as a promise about what you personally will see. Sony’s HD viewing-distance guidance was modified on 9 September 2026.

How to choose between the labels

For a 32-inch TV

Compare the native resolutions of the actual models you are considering. If you sit relatively close, Full HD may be worth prioritizing for the additional pixel detail; if you sit farther away, that advantage may matter less to you. Neither outcome follows from the screen size alone, and the Philips example shows why “HD Ready” is not an exact resolution specification.

For a 43-inch TV

At 43 inches, check the resolution with particular care if your seating position is close enough that detail matters to you. Full HD provides more pixels than HD, but whether that difference is noticeable depends on your distance, the content and the specific display. Do not assume a 43-inch set is Full HD—or HD Ready—based on its diagonal measurement.

Check more than resolution

Resolution is only one part of picture quality. LG treats resolution and panel technology as separate specifications, so compare relevant panel and model details as well as pixel count. Two televisions with the same listed resolution are not necessarily otherwise equivalent, and the resolution label by itself cannot establish which will look better overall.

A practical model-checking list

  • Find the exact model number, then verify its native panel resolution in the manufacturer’s specification sheet.
  • Compare 1280 × 720, 1366 × 768 and 1920 × 1080 accurately; do not treat “HD Ready” as a precise pixel count.
  • Consider your actual seating distance alongside the screen size. Use brand distance charts as recommendations, not visibility guarantees.
  • Compare other panel and model specifications before deciding that one TV will have better picture quality.
  • Check the current retailer listing separately for stock and price; the specifications above do not establish either.

For model-level reference, LG’s resolution definitions and the Philips 32-inch HD Ready specification illustrate why an exact manufacturer specification matters more than a category label.
