HBO Max (also shown as Max on some devices) can crash because of an app or system fault, corrupted local data, an incompatible older device, browser interference, unstable networking, or a service-side problem. The fastest path is to identify whether the failure follows the account, title, network, or one device, then update, restart, clear local data, and reinstall in that order.
Menu names differ by manufacturer and app version. Use the currently listed HBO Max app in your device’s official app store; do not install unofficial APKs or downloads.
First determine what is actually failing
“Crashing” can mean several different symptoms. An app that closes to the home screen needs different troubleshooting from a video that merely buffers.

Open another streaming app, try a second HBO Max title, and test the same account elsewhere. Roku also recommends trying other titles and checking for a provider interruption when multiple titles fail (Roku playback troubleshooting).

Do not declare that HBO Max is “down” from one failed device. A platform-wide outage requires confirmation through official HBO Max channels or reliable, current outage reporting.
Apply these fixes in order
1. Update HBO Max, the device, and the browser
Official HBO Max guidance puts updates near the start of troubleshooting (HBO Max troubleshooting). Install any pending app update, then update the operating system or TV firmware. On a computer, update the browser as well.
- Android phone or tablet: Google Play Store → search for HBO Max → Update. Then Settings → System → Software Update (labels vary).
- iPhone or iPad: App Store → profile icon → HBO Max → Update. Update iOS or iPadOS at Settings → General → Software Update.
- Amazon Fire tablet: Update through the Amazon Appstore; update the tablet at Settings → Device Options → System Updates.
- Android TV or Google TV: Highlight HBO Max, hold Select, choose View Details → Update when those labels are present.
- Apple TV: Update HBO Max in the App Store; update tvOS at Settings → System → Software Updates → Update Software.
- Roku: Highlight the HBO Max channel, press Star (*), and check for an update. Update Roku at Settings → System → System update → Check now.
- Smart TV: Install TV firmware and app updates from the television’s own support or app-store menus.
2. Sign out and perform a complete restart
- Sign out of HBO Max.
- Turn the device fully off, rather than leaving it in sleep mode.
- Wait about 10 seconds, then turn it on.
- Open HBO Max and sign in again.
On Roku, use Settings → System → System restart (on Roku TV: Settings → System → Power → System restart). If needed, unplug the Roku for 20 seconds before reconnecting it, as described in the official guidance.
3. Clear cache or app data where the platform allows it
Cache clearing removes temporary files and is relatively low-risk. Clearing storage or data also removes sign-in information, downloads, and local preferences, so you will need to log in again.

- Android phone or tablet: Settings → search for HBO Max → HBO Max → Storage & cache (or Storage) → Clear cache. If necessary, choose Clear storage or Clear data.
- Fire TV: Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications → HBO Max → Force Stop → Clear Cache. Use Clear Data only if cache clearing fails.
- Android TV: Settings → Apps → HBO Max → Clear cache, then Clear data if required.
Apple TV, iPhone, iPad, and many smart TVs generally do not expose an HBO Max cache button; restart, delete, and reinstall instead.
4. Reinstall HBO Max
- Delete or uninstall HBO Max.
- Restart the device.
- Reinstall it from the official app store.
- Sign in and test a title before changing other settings.
On Fire TV, use Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications → HBO Max → Uninstall, then reinstall from the Amazon Appstore. On Android TV, uninstall through Settings → Apps and reinstall through the TV’s app store. Reinstallation cannot fix a service-side fault that affects multiple devices.
Platform-specific checks
Roku
- Update the HBO Max channel and Roku software.
- Sign out, then restart Roku.
- Unplug it for 20 seconds and reconnect.
- Reinstall HBO Max if it still closes.
If the Roku itself reboots, runs hot, or crashes in other apps, investigate Roku firmware, ventilation, available storage, power, or television firmware rather than treating the channel as the sole cause.
Amazon Fire TV
Force-stop HBO Max, clear cache, and (if necessary) clear data. Restart at Settings → My Fire TV → Restart, install Fire TV updates, and reinstall the app if it continues to fail. Clearing data signs you out and resets local app information.

Android TV and Google TV
Use Settings → Apps → HBO Max → Clear cache, then Clear data if needed. Restart the television, update both the app and TV software, and reinstall. Labels differ among TCL, Hisense, Sony, Philips, and other manufacturers.
Apple TV
Update HBO Max and tvOS, sign out, restart Apple TV, and delete/reinstall the app if available. Test another title and another app. Do not look for an iOS-style cache control that the Apple TV interface does not provide.
Smart TVs
Update firmware and the app, force-close it if the TV offers that control, power-cycle by unplugging briefly, and reinstall HBO Max. Check free storage. If HBO Max works on a separate Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, or console connected to the same television, the TV’s native app or firmware is the leading suspect.
Android and iOS mobile devices
After updating, restart the phone or tablet and test on both Wi-Fi and cellular data. Android users can clear cache/data using the paths above. iPhone and iPad users should delete and reinstall the app if restarting and updating do not help.

Browser crashes and playback failures
Use a current version of Google Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge on Windows, or Safari. Then:
- Open HBO Max in a private or incognito window.
- Disable ad blockers, privacy tools, script blockers, VPN extensions, and other add-ons.
- Clear site data for HBO Max.
- Try another supported browser.
- Test without an external display or other setup that may interfere with browser DRM.
If the service works in a private window, stored site data or an extension is more likely than an account failure.
Check the network without blaming it for every crash
A slow or unstable connection usually causes buffering, low quality, failed playback, or repeated loading; a true app crash is more often an app, operating-system, device-resource, or service fault. Network testing is still worthwhile because connection failures can make an app appear broken.
HBO Max lists 5 Mbps minimum download speed for HD and recommends 50 Mbps or more for 4K (official network guidance). Test on the affected device and try:

- Switching between Wi-Fi and cellular data.
- Restarting the modem and router.
- Moving closer to the router or using Ethernet where available.
- Temporarily disabling a VPN or custom DNS configuration.
Match the fix to the symptom
It crashes immediately after opening
Update the app and operating system, sign out if possible, restart fully, clear cache/data on Android or Fire TV, and reinstall. If it works on another device, continue using that device while investigating the affected platform’s firmware, storage, or compatibility.
It crashes during playback
Try another title, check the connection, disable VPNs, and test another device or browser. A single title failing points toward title-specific delivery rather than a damaged installation.
The TV or stick restarts
Check whether other apps trigger the reboot. Multiple-app crashes, overheating, low storage, bad power, or outdated firmware indicate a device problem. A factory reset is not an early HBO Max fix.
When to stop troubleshooting and contact support
Contact HBO Max support when the app fails across several supported devices or browsers, or when all ordinary fixes fail on one device. Record:

- Device model and operating-system or firmware version.
- HBO Max app or browser version.
- Approximate time the failure occurred.
- Whether every title, one title, or one profile is affected.
- The exact on-screen error message or code.
- Whether another network changes the result.
Official HBO Max guidance asks users to provide the displayed error message or code (support instructions). Check the current supported-device information before concluding that an older model is unsupported: HBO Max supported devices and getting started.
Use another device before buying anything
If HBO Max works on your phone or browser but repeatedly crashes only in an older smart-TV app, a separate supported streaming player or a game console you already own can be a practical workaround. Test the service on a borrowed or existing device first. Buying a new player will not solve a failure that follows the account, network, or every device.
Do not factory-reset a TV, Roku, or streaming stick unless multiple apps are unstable, updates and reinstalling have failed, or the manufacturer recommends it. A reset removes accounts, apps, settings, and saved network credentials.
