Use is growing, but people draw a clear line between getting help with wording and handing an AI control of an entire relationship. The biggest concern is not whether a message sounds polished; it is whether a profile, photo or “match” is genuine.
How common is AI use in online dating?
There is no single, directly comparable trend line because the major surveys used different samples and years. The 2024 Singles in America study, a demographically representative U.S. survey of more than 5,000 singles aged 18–77, found that 14% of people who date online had experimented with AI, compared with 6% of all singles. A 2025 Kinsey Institute summary of an annual Match/Kinsey survey reported higher figures: 26% of respondents overall and 38% of active daters said they used AI while dating. Those results indicate expanding use, not a precise year-to-year growth rate.

Use is also uneven by country and task. In the U.S. study, writing was the most common application among people who had used AI for dating. German findings point to similar but still minority adoption.
| Survey and population | Reported AI use | What was measured |
|---|---|---|
| Singles in America, U.S., 2024; more than 5,000 singles aged 18–77 | 14% of online daters; 6% of all singles | Experimenting with AI while dating |
| Kinsey Institute summary, 2025; 5,000 daters | 26% of respondents; 38% of active daters | Using AI while dating |
| Bitkom Research, Germany, 2025; 532 online-dating users within a representative survey of 1,006 people aged 16+ | 19% used AI-generated chat text; 18% used AI to create or improve profile images | Specific text and image uses |
What are people using AI to do?
Profiles and first messages
Among U.S. respondents who had used AI for online dating, 43% used it to write a dating-app profile and 37% used it for a first message. These are relatively low-risk, early-stage uses: a person supplies the facts and chooses what to send, while the software helps with wording, tone or brainstorming.

Photos and profile presentation
Image editing is more controversial. In Germany, 18% of dating-platform users said they had used AI to create or improve profile images. Almost half of U.S. singles said they would draw the line at an AI-altered image, suggesting that many daters regard a materially changed photo as misleading even when they accept help with text.
Advice, matching and conversation
Some users ask AI for dating advice or matching suggestions. Others use it to generate replies throughout a conversation. The Kinsey Institute’s 2025 summary found that 33% considered an entirely AI-generated conversation a dealbreaker, while 39% of U.S. singles opposed a match using AI in every conversation. The distinction is practical: editing your own words preserves your presence; outsourcing every exchange can make the other person believe they are getting a level of attention and personality that is not actually there.

Does AI produce better matches?
Survey respondents often perceive a short-term advantage, but the evidence does not prove better long-term relationships. In the U.S. study, 32% of people who had used AI for online dating said it helped them get better matches and meet potential partners faster. In a January 2024 McAfee survey of 7,000 adults across the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, India and Japan, 81% of respondents in India said AI-generated content brought more interest and better responses.
Both figures are self-reported perceptions, not controlled tests. No published figure in these surveys demonstrates that AI improves relationship quality, durability or trust after people meet. A useful comparison therefore separates assistance with early wording from claims about outcomes that have not been independently measured.

Where should you set an authenticity boundary?
A workable rule is to use AI as an editor or brainstorming partner, not as an impersonator. Keep the facts, opinions and emotional commitments yours. Read every suggested line before sending it, remove claims you would not say aloud, and avoid letting a tool manufacture vulnerability or intimacy.
- Usually acceptable: correcting grammar, shortening a profile, suggesting several opening questions, translating your own words or helping organize genuine interests.
- Disclose or reconsider: heavily altered photographs, invented hobbies, fabricated life stories, or messages that imply feelings you do not have.
- High-risk: allowing AI to run every conversation, request money, move someone to an outside service or create a false identity.
Why are bots and scams the central risk?
AI can make fraudulent profiles and messages more convincing, and daters are encountering that problem directly. McAfee’s seven-country survey found that 77% of respondents in India had encountered fake profiles or photos that looked AI-generated; 39% said an online love interest turned out to be a scammer; and 26% said a supposed love interest was actually an AI-generated bot. In Germany, 63% of dating-platform users told Bitkom they worried that a match might be an AI chatbot.

These percentages describe respondents’ reported experiences or concerns, not a measured share of all dating accounts. They nevertheless explain why verification and cautious behavior matter even when a conversation feels unusually smooth.
How to check whether a match is genuine
- Slow down unusual conversations. Be wary of generic messages, instant declarations of affection, replies that arrive with unnatural speed or answers that ignore your specific questions.
- Inspect photos. Look for inconsistent lighting, distorted hands or jewelry, repeated backgrounds and images that appear too polished. Run a reverse-image search to see whether a photo appears elsewhere under another name.
- Do not follow unexpected links. A person you have not met should not be sending investment pages, verification forms, downloads or urgent payment requests.
- Never send money or gifts. Do not transfer funds, buy gift cards, share banking credentials or provide identity documents to an online romantic interest you have not met in person.
- Use verification features. TransUnion’s 2025 online-dating survey found that more than two-thirds of users were more likely to contact verified profiles, while 70% were concerned about scams. Substantial minorities said they would consider paying for background checks, but availability and quality vary by service and location.
- Tell someone you trust. Share the new relationship with a friend or family member who can notice inconsistencies you may miss. Arrange a first meeting in a public place and keep your own transportation and communication channels.
How to evaluate an AI dating feature
Whether a feature is worth using depends less on how clever its wording sounds than on its boundaries and safeguards. Check these five points before enabling it:
Best Value
- Assistance level: Does it polish a sentence, suggest options or generate an entire conversation?
- Disclosure: Can you tell a match when AI helped, and does the service explain its own use of automated accounts?
- Privacy: What profile details, private chats and photos are retained, and for how long?
- Safety controls: Are there protections against impersonation, scams and manipulated images, plus a clear reporting process?
- Evidence quality: Are success claims based on self-reported impressions, or on independently measured outcomes?
The current evidence supports cautious help with early-stage wording. It does not establish that AI creates lasting relationship success, and it cannot replace ordinary identity checks, consent or judgment.
