Square Enix removed the 14-day play-time limit from the FINAL FANTASY XI free trial on September 30, 2026, and raised its character level cap from 50 to 75. Previously created trial accounts can be used again, even if their trial period had ended. The change makes the trial open-ended in time, but it does not remove every restriction.
What changed in the FINAL FANTASY XI free trial?
Square Enix announced that trial players can now play without a 14-day time limit and progress to level 75 instead of stopping at level 50. The company says the higher cap opens access to additional content released for characters up to level 75. Its announcement describes the update as: “We’re removing the play time limit for the FINAL FANTASY XI Free Trial version and increasing its character level cap to Level 75!” Square Enix’s announcement
Accounts created for the free trial before the change can be used again, including accounts whose trial time had run out. For returning trial users, that means the former deadline no longer prevents them from picking up the account.
What limits still apply?
No play-time limit does not mean unrestricted access to the full game. GamesRadar reports that the free trial includes the base game, not expansion content, and retains restrictions on certain social and economy features. Its report describes limits involving auction-house access, trading, gil holdings, and starting parties; trial players can join parties started by full-game players. The joke in “Have you heard of the critically acclaimed MMORPG… oh, Final Fantasy 11, that’s new” is that the familiar pitch points to FFXIV, while the news is about FFXI. PC Gamer likewise framed the FFXI announcement as a twist on that phrase. PC Gamer’s coverage of the announcement The reference is about the meme and the trial pitch—not a claim that the two games have the same gameplay or trial terms.
